Herrad Of Hohenbourg And Her Garden Of Delights, Alyssa M. Hughes Apr 2015

Herrad Of Hohenbourg And Her Garden Of Delights, Alyssa M. Hughes

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Herrad of Hohenbourg was a major contributor to the visual culture of 12th century European monastic tradition. She was the abbess of a female convent known as the Hohenbourg Abbey located on the eastern slope of Mount Odilienberg in the Vosges mountain range of modern day Alsace, France. Herrad seceded her mentor Relinde as Abbess of Hohenbourg in the year 1167; her reign would last from this year until her death in 1195. Amidst the suppression of a patriarchal society, Relinde and Herrad were able to instill the necessity of education within the convent. With the passing of Relinde, Herrad …

Grammatical Relations And Grammatical Categories In Malay; The Indonesian Prefix "Men-" Revisited, Johnny Tjia Apr 2015

Grammatical Relations And Grammatical Categories In Malay; The Indonesian Prefix "Men-" Revisited, Johnny Tjia

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The lexical roots of Malay are flexible with regard to their grammatical categories, which presents a problem in providing grammatical evidence for their category determination. This paper attempts to propose the use of affixes as one way to deal with the issue. Data from Indonesian and Ambon (Malay) language are among others given for clarification. The grammatical evidence from Indonesian active meN-, together with other affixes, are revisited as they can contribute to our understanding of the matter.

A Content Analysis Of The Mpaa Rating System And Its Evolution, Cesar A. Perez Apr 2015

A Content Analysis Of The Mpaa Rating System And Its Evolution, Cesar A. Perez

Honors College Theses

This thesis analyzes the content within PG-13 and R-rated films from 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014 to determine if there is any indication of ratings creep. Ratings creep is a term used to describe the increase of adult content in movies; especially in movies aimed at a younger audience. The film industry since the beginning has had to adapt to an ever-changing society. From small silent pictures to big-budget digital productions the film industry has evolved into what it is today, a statement of freedom of expression. It is this freedom of expression, however, that has placed the industry in …

The Wind Of Madness And The Search For Order Through Disorder In Partition Narratives, Sarah C. Longenderfer Apr 2015

The Wind Of Madness And The Search For Order Through Disorder In Partition Narratives, Sarah C. Longenderfer

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

By drawing on Partition theory such as Pandey (2001), Daiya (2008), and Butalia (2000) as well as madness theory by Foucault (1971), this paper explores the way madness is described in Partition texts through characters attempting to regain control over their lives and assert their new national identities. Coinciding with decolonization of British rule, the Partition of India (1947) divided India and Pakistan and led to genocidal violence during the migrations of both Hindus and Muslims to their respective countries. I utilize three short stories by Saadat Hassan Manto: "Colder than Ice" (1950), "The Return" (1948), and "Toba Tek Singh" …

Still, Emily Claire Humberson Apr 2015

Still, Emily Claire Humberson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Still is a collection of poetry written for the ENGL470 Seminar: Poetry course, taught by Professor Pineda. The word "still" itself has two definitions: not moving or making a sound, and nevertheless, all the same. The collection seeks to quietly reconcile the inevitable end of all things, while still reporting the difficulties of reaching such a conclusion. The collection blends both narrative and lyric elements. The poems straddle the range between surreal and realistic imagery, juxtaposing the visions of dreams with the hardships of reality. Still explores change over time, witnessed in interpersonal relationships and an aging landscape. It works …

Bending Gender: Perversions In Children's Literature, D. Claire Winkler Apr 2015

Bending Gender: Perversions In Children's Literature, D. Claire Winkler

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper examines the role literary perversions play in children's literature. Specifically, it examines the role they play within the books Charlotte's Web and Bridge to Terabithia. Moreover, it is particularly interested in examining how literary perversions of gender--that is, representations of gender that fall outside of the normative standard of society--effect the narratives and characters of the books in question. The presence of this form of literary perversion in children's books is fascinating because childhood is one of the only times gender fluidity is acceptable. Yet, children are also being prepped for the roles they will be expected …

Hildegard Von Bingen Als Mystikerin: Der Einfluss Einer Patriarchalischen Gesellschaft Auf Die Scivias, Alyssa M. Hughes Apr 2015

Hildegard Von Bingen Als Mystikerin: Der Einfluss Einer Patriarchalischen Gesellschaft Auf Die Scivias, Alyssa M. Hughes

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Hildegard of Bingen was born in the year 1098 and died in the year 1179. She was active as an abbess of the Benedictine order during the height of the 12th century. She was, as many future abbesses were, born into a noble family. However, her family was not as well off as what could have been expected of a noble family at the time. Therefore, being the tenth of ten children and the victim of frequent illness in the form of migraine headaches (later understood as the root of her many godly visions), Hildegard was sent to live in …

Neuter Gender In The Languages Of Aru, Antoinette Schapper Apr 2015

Neuter Gender In The Languages Of Aru, Antoinette Schapper

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines gender agreement in three little-known languages of the Aru Islands and places them within the larger pattern of "neuter gender" in eastern Indonesia. For each language, I look first at the variety of agreement targets that are controlled by gendered nouns. Secondly, I look at the semantics of nouns that control agreement. I show that whilst having a strongly semantic base involving animacy, gender in Aru languages is a grammatical category in which many nouns denoting certain types of entities that lack discernable biological animacy are assigned to the same gender as that of animate referents. I …

The Indonesian Verbal Suffix "-Nya"; Nominalization Or Subordination?, Philippe Grangé Apr 2015

The Indonesian Verbal Suffix "-Nya"; Nominalization Or Subordination?, Philippe Grangé

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The suffix nya is one of the most frequent and polysemic suffixes in Indonesian. It can provide definite determination and topicalization. The "Verb nya", which often appears in a topicalized subject Noun Phrase (NP), is generally labelled as a deverbal noun. Nevertheless, many syntactic constraints set it apart from Indonesian deverbal nouns. "Verb nya" must be complemented by a NP, which can easily be reconstructed as a former subject: a sentence is topicalized and thus becomes a noun clause, generally the subject of the main clause Verb Phrase (VP). I argue that "Verb nya" is a subordinate noun clause, almost …

Responsive Turns In Indonesian Informal Conversation, M. J. Van Naerssen Apr 2015

Responsive Turns In Indonesian Informal Conversation, M. J. Van Naerssen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

People have all sorts of expectations about how interlocutors will and should behave linguistically when engaged in a conversation. These conversational norms are usually implicit and are sometimes difficult to master in a language that is new to you. This paper presents a model of different types of responses in informal conversation, illustrated with Indonesian examples. It builds upon the conversation analytic notion of preference; distinguishing preferred - or constructive - responses and dispreferred - or competitive - responses. The model is meant as a tool to cross-linguistically compare response behaviour to gain insight in language specific expectations about interaction …

Take What You Can Carry: A Novella, Maggie Stough

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

They say when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, but what do you do when there's too many dogs to walk, two postmenopausal muggers on the loose, and one unexpected pregnancy? That's for MJ McCormick to find out. Upon taking a pregnancy test in a coffee shop bathroom one afternoon, she soon finds herself grappling with the reality of a strange genetic condition, its religious connotations, and her family's secrets. Take What You Can Carry is a novella written by Maggie Stough for her Creative Writing Fiction Seminar during the Fall 2014 semester.

Nietzsche And The Analytics: A Reexamination Of His Critique Of Truth, Nicole K. Oestreicher Apr 2015

Nietzsche And The Analytics: A Reexamination Of His Critique Of Truth, Nicole K. Oestreicher

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The paper examines how two analytic scholars, Maudemarie Clark and Robert Lanier Anderson, overcame the major self-referential inconsistency in Nietzsche's epistemology, which analytic scholars have long avoided. The author outlines four key interpretive issues for analytics in Nietzsche scholarship, which stem from Nietzsche's writing style and from his critique of the practice of philosophy in general. The author illustrates how it is possible to overcome these particular interpretive issues by taking his concerns into consideration, and by highlighting how his concerns are compatible with analytic practices and values.

The Thesis Of Norm Transformation In The Theory Of Mass Atrocity, Paul Morrow Apr 2015

The Thesis Of Norm Transformation In The Theory Of Mass Atrocity, Paul Morrow

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Theoretical accounts of genocide and mass atrocity commonly embrace the thesis of norm transformation. This thesis holds, first, that individual and institutional participation in such crimes is at least partially explained by transformations in basic norms that structure social and political life. It holds, second, that preventing future occurrences of such crimes requires changing norms that currently govern the actions of particular individual and institutional actors. This paper clarifies, defends, and extends the thesis of norm transformation. It clarifies this thesis by providing a general account of the nature and dynamics of norms. It defends this thesis against charges of …
