An Aulete Takes Flight: The Iconography Of Music And Myth In A Myrina-Type Terracotta In The Mead Art Museum, Loren Isotalo

New England Classical Journal

A Myrina-type terracotta figurine of a flying aulete held in Amherst College’s Mead Art Museum exemplifies a new body of evidence relevant to the study of ancient Greek music. I propose that this coarse figurine indicates possible musical funerary practices of Myrina and that the aulete may be a depiction of the god Eros. As the aulos inhabits a complex space in Greek social thought, a connection between Eros and the aulos would open up new ways of understanding how the ancient Greeks received and understood Eros as a god through music and sound.

The Life Of Terence, Revisited, Hannah Čulík-Baird

Suetonius’ biography of Publius Terentius Afer, i.e., Terence the African (c. 195-159 BCE), identifies the Roman comic poet as a former slave from Carthage, describing him physically as a slim man of medium height and “dark color” (colore fusco). Yet classicists have historically denied Terence’s blackness out of a belief that “humanistic” or linguistic excellence could not be reconciled with blackness and African identity. This article addresses the Eurocentric logic underpinning classical scholars’ treatment of Terence, ultimately affirming both the ancient and modern traditions which make legitimate claims on the black poet as an ancestral figure.

Out With The Old, In With The Young? Youth And Old Age In Vergil’S Eclogues And Georgics, Charissa Skoutelas, Anthony Smith

Scholars have noted that Silenus’ entrapment by Chromis and Mnasyllos (Eclogues 6) and Aristaeus’ ambush of Proteus (Georgics 4) share distinct elements. Both passages portray youths forcefully binding an old figure with chains to compel a song. In comparing old Silenus and Proteus with the “boys” Chromis and Mnasyllos and “most daring of the youth” Aristaeus respectively, this paper traces such physical compulsion alongside the metaphorical confinement of Tityrus (Eclogues 1) and the Corycian senex (Georgics 4) to argue that Vergil mobilizes the clash of youth and senectitude to comment on the effects of literary tradition …

Student Works

Katherine Philips (1 January 1631/2 – 22 June 1664) was an Anglo-Welsh Royalist poet and translator. Philips authored over a hundred poems on female friendship, theology, politics, and the nature of souls before an early death by smallpox in 1664. Two volumes of Philips’s work were published in 1664 and 1667 (posthumously).

This volume is a diplomatic transcript of her autograph manuscript known as Tutin, now held in the National Library of Wales (MS 775B). Included in the transcript are the missing sections of several poems taken from the 1664 edition of Poems by the incomparable Mrs. K.P. and the …

Community Engagement for the Children’s Theatre examines how children’s theatres across the United States build and sustain mutually beneficial relationships with their surrounding communities. In a field where community support is essential, but resources are often limited, long-term success depends on meaningful, reciprocal engagement. This research draws on surveys and interviews with theatre professionals to investigate strategies used by organizations of varying sizes to connect with local audiences, educators, and families. In 1951, Salah Abu-Seif directed Lak Yūm yā ẓālim (Your Day Is Coming) – scripted by Naguib Mahfouz – adapting Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin (1867). In their third collaboration, Abu-Seif and Mahfouz went beyond merely adapting Zola’s novel – they also incorporated traits and techniques from film noir, creating what this article terms a “polyphonic adaptation” that draws from multiple sources. While their partnership is often credited with pioneering realism in Egyptian cinema, this article argues that the film’s crime-thriller elements invite a reassessment of that narrative. This paper examines on-screen representations of female criminals. It focuses on Rayyā and Sakīna, two sisters who were arrested in Egypt in 1920 and executed in 1921. Since 1953, the sisters have inspired movies and TV series that have entrenched their myth in popular culture. Rayyā and Sakīna are at the core of narratives that bear moral imperatives on societal issues, such as the place of women in society and the relation of the nation to its margins. I will argue that, until a recent off-screen resignification, Rayyā and Sakīna have not been deeply resignified in Egyptian movies. Instead, they …

This document is in two parts. The first examines selected works of Latin-American composers Tania León and Roberto Sierra. Both composers cite their cultural background as a force that shapes their artistic expression. Many of their works are titled in Spanish, with compositions referencing their homelands in subject and narrative, and incorporate the autochthonous music(s) of Cuba and Puerto Rico. Elements of these afrodiasporic musical traditions can be found in their works: Alegre, Batá, Stride, (Leon), Loiza, and Concerto for Viola (Sierra), each examined here.

Lee Hoiby’s life and style are discussed, and his song set The Shining Place: Five Poems of Emily Dickinson is analyzed. A small biography of Emily Dickinson and of the set itself is provided. The song set is analyzed through how Hoiby set Dickinson’s dashes in the music, how diatonic collections are used within the songs, and how motives are used within the songs. Interviews conducted between myself and Lee Hoiby’s partner Mark Shulgasser are transcribed at the end in Appendix A.

How can academic affairs administrators foster robust Scholarship of Teaching and Learning practices on a regional baccalaureate campus? Fulfilling tenure-system faculty requirements for scholarly research at a teaching institution alongside 4-4 teaching loads is a challenge, but supporting faculty in SoTL engagement shows them how it draws on their expertise to yield meaningful benefits for themselves as teacher-scholars and for their students. Building on Hu Bo´s film “An elephant sitting still”, this paper examines a specific condition in contemporary society, in which expectations about the future are declining. This situation is interpreted as a consequence of the progressive collapse of modernisation. The diminishing expectations, I claim, are related to capital´s internal crisis, which erodes the very fabric of social mediation; in its place, arise all kinds of atavistic forms of violent desocialisation. It is a common belief that certain behaviors are influenced by a person's social level. This claim is taken to apply to housing maintenance in any society, whether it is owned or rented. The aim of this study is to identify the socioeconomic indicators that are most predictive of the maintenance level of houses in mass housing schemes in the metropolis of Ilorin, Nigeria.
