Suspected Of Having A Book: American Slavery As A Literacy Sponsor, Cody Schweickert
Suspected Of Having A Book: American Slavery As A Literacy Sponsor, Cody Schweickert
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
Applying concepts from Deborah Brandt’s “Sponsors of Literacy” to Frederick Douglass’ “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” explains how American slavery functioned as an institutional literacy sponsor, and how Douglass achieved literacy against the opposing forces of his sponsor. During the antebellum period, the American slavery institution, fueled by pro-slavery Anglo Saxons, maintained a social structure that guaranteed political, economic, social, and legal advantages for whites over African Americans. Afraid that literacy acquisition for African Americans might lead to their self-empowerment and eventual freedom, pro-slavery whites dedicated themselves to anti-literacy legislation and other measures aimed at keeping African Americans …
The Natures Of Monsters And Heroes, Vanessa Nikolovska
The Natures Of Monsters And Heroes, Vanessa Nikolovska
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
Around the late eighth or early seventh century B.C., a poet, known to later ages as Homer, composed two epic poems that tell the tales of the Trojan War, The Iliad and The Odyssey. The Iliad tells the story of the rage of Achilles, the great Greek warrior, while The Odyssey tells the story of the coming home of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, from the Trojan War. A study of both epics reveals that constructs portraying various values, such as the characteristics of heroes, have remained the same from the times of ancient Greece to the present day. …

Lost Prophets: Tertullian, Eusebius, Epiphanius, And Early Montanism, Brice Andrew Larson
Lost Prophets: Tertullian, Eusebius, Epiphanius, And Early Montanism, Brice Andrew Larson
Seminary Masters Theses
ABSTRACT The dearth of reliable primary source material on the New Prophecy has led to a proliferation of interpretations of the character of the movement. However, a careful examination of the New Prophecy’s preserved sayings, the writings of Tertullian, and the movement’s earliest critics preserved by Eusebius and Epiphanius reveal a movement steeped in the Christian tradition that came into conflict with other Christians because of their willingness to pay ministers and their passive understanding of the charisma of prophecy.
Role Of The Church In Fighting Hiv-Aids Stigmatization Among Women In Kenya, Christine Adhiambo Ouko
Role Of The Church In Fighting Hiv-Aids Stigmatization Among Women In Kenya, Christine Adhiambo Ouko
Master of Art Theology Thesis
Ouko, Christine Adhiambo. “Role of the Church in Fighting HIV-AIDS Stigmatization among Women in Kenya.” MA thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2015, 116 pp.
Practical Theology, a discipline under which this thesis is based, is the application of God’s word in real life problems. HIV/AIDS stigmatization is a persistent and pernicious problem to any effective response to the pandemic. It is, therefore, a perennial danger confronting the church. The peril is acute when women and children struggle in alienation and despair in familial, social, and religious places believed to be lifesaving stations. Apparently, it is not easy to bear the burden of …

When Sleepy Hollow Came To St. Louis, Jeffrey Smith
The Confluence (2009-2020)
As part of a broader expedition, writer Washington Irving—whose famous works include “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip van Winkle”—visited St. Louis in 1832. He had lunch with explorer and former territorial governor William Clark and saw Black Hawk imprisoned at Jefferson Barracks. Here is his account.
Sound Stimulation In Patients With Alzheimer’S Disease, Amy Clements-Cortés
Sound Stimulation In Patients With Alzheimer’S Disease, Amy Clements-Cortés
Music Faculty Publications
Sound stimulation is an important approach to consider when working with patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Both music and other forms of sound stimulation can contribute to improved health and well-being and are often easily implemented in the long-term care (LTC) environment. This paper provides an overview of the two basic approaches to the use of sound with persons in LTC (music therapy and music medicine), as well as a discussion of considerations for implementing various types of sound stimulation in the LTC setting.
If I Had An F: A Feminist Picture Book For Boys, Kelly Tieger
If I Had An F: A Feminist Picture Book For Boys, Kelly Tieger
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This independent study uncovers and meets a need in contemporary children's literature: a book explicitly expressing Feminism as a critical democratic value for everyone. The study includes a comprehensive review of available children's picture books on the topics of gender identity, roles, and expressions after finding a notable absence of books dealing with, or even mentioning the word Feminism. Specifically, this picture book serves the previously unaddressed population of cis-gendered gender conforming boys aged eight to eleven by engaging them specifically in the topic of Feminism. The study posits that picture books can act as catalysts for positive change within …

Harry Potter, Master Of Love, Charles S. Holland
Harry Potter, Master Of Love, Charles S. Holland
Akadimia Filosofia
Love can be differentiated into two main categories: “action love” and “emotion love.” “Action love” spurs us to act for the betterment of some cause, but it is empty without “emotion love,” which encompasses the feelings we have for those close to us. Likewise, “emotion love” by itself is not true love, either. As Harry Potter shows, the ultimate love combines these two categories.
The Possibility Of The Gift, Bruno Cassara
The Possibility Of The Gift, Bruno Cassara
Akadimia Filosofia
Like many others who work in continental philosophy, Jean-Luc Marion has written on the gift and its possibility. His essay attempts to refute Jacques Derrida’s conclusion that the gift as such is impossible, as its structure is in fact always one of exchange within an economic horizon. Marion first presents the gift as it appears within the horizon of economy and identifies the reasons for the impossibility of the gift. He therefore reasons that the gift must be examined under another, more primordial horizon—givenness, where the gift becomes possible as non-self-identical and unconditioned possibility. This paper provides an alternative solution …
Aristotle’S Category Construction And The Why Behind It, Margaret Rae Titcomb
Aristotle’S Category Construction And The Why Behind It, Margaret Rae Titcomb
Akadimia Filosofia
Aristotle’s Categoriae, or the Categories, is a comprehensive classification system for every object of human understanding that can be either a subject or a predicate of a proposition. There are ten categories: Substance, Quantity, Qualification, Relative/Relation, Place, Time, Position, State (Condition), Action, and Affection. The first part of this paper will explain each of the categories in the order in which they are presented in the chapters of Categoriae. The second half of the paper will discuss the question of ambiguity in the approach Aristotle uses to both construct and find meaning in these categories. Fr. Joseph …
Ignorance Is Not Bliss, Tommy Tsang
Ignorance Is Not Bliss, Tommy Tsang
Akadimia Filosofia
This paper will examine the concept of evil through the lens of Saint Augustine's view of evil in Confessions and Socrates' view of evil in Meno. To do so, this paper will attempt to dissect both philosopher's argument regarding the obtainability of evil and take a logical, step-by-step approach to reach its conclusion. Ultimately, this paper will challenge Augustine's belief that it is possible to desire evil and instead argue for Socrates' belief that evil only exists insofar as we are ignorant of the good. After all, arguing for Socrates' belief on evil over Augustine's seems to be the …

A Critique Of Bourdieu And Passeron’S Educational Reform In The Inheritors, Daniel Mccabe
A Critique Of Bourdieu And Passeron’S Educational Reform In The Inheritors, Daniel Mccabe
Akadimia Filosofia
Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron’s The Inheritors critically examines the French education system in the 1960s. The Inheritors is a compilation of sociological studies on university students in the Arts which the authors use a premises for their education reform citing issues in the traditional system that allow bourgeois students to have an unfair advantage due to their cultured upbringing. The main systemic problem within French education is identified by Bourdieu and Passeron as the charismatic ideology that awards cultural, theoretical knowledge over merit and effort. To resolve the bias within the traditional French education system, a revolutionary new education …
Our Time: Existentialism In The Age Of Fear, Michael S. Dauber
Our Time: Existentialism In The Age Of Fear, Michael S. Dauber
Akadimia Filosofia
This paper focuses on re-awakening existentialism from its realm of philosophical inactivity over the past few decades. Existentialism is still very much a “committed” philosophy, providing us with an approach to life that gives us courage in the face of tremendous adversity. Indeed, this philosophy enables us to focus on what matters most in our own lives by freeing ourselves from the burdens of fear and unrealistic expectations given to us by those who seek to control our futures. Such a conception of modern existentialism introduces the notion of existential courage: what the modern existentialist must overcome is the fear …
Anxiety, The Most Revelatory Of Moods, John T. Whalen
Anxiety, The Most Revelatory Of Moods, John T. Whalen
Akadimia Filosofia
This paper sets out to explore what, for Heidegger, gives anxiety such revelatory power. I would especially like to pay attention to Heidegger’s distinction of anxiety and fear, to further stress anxiety’s unique revelatory power. Furthermore, I will address how Heidegger’s analysis of anxiety and moods generally (an ontological analysis) is distinct from what is understood by moods in the empirical (and ontic) discipline of psychology. Heidegger’s analysis of anxiety in Being and Time bridges the first half of the work with the second half of the work. In short, Heidegger needs a mood to allow for an analysis of …
War, Kyle Pritz
War, Kyle Pritz
Akadimia Filosofia
This paper is an effective meditation on the morality and justification of war. Moreover, this paper explores the ways in which war is a pointless concept, an endeavor that can never be justified and is certainly not brought on by the everyday person. Rather, war is an exercise of power that only benefits the rich elite and the powerful authority figures of the world. We must strive to reveal the underlying truth in our social reactions, that we always have the power to find peace and resolve differences. Only then can we finally move beyond war.
Unmonumental Moment, Amy Holbein
Unmonumental Moment, Amy Holbein
Graduate Theses
This thesis statement investigates the coexistence of joy with grief, light alongside darkness, and the intersection of the divine with the ordinary, as they express themselves in my thesis “Unmonumental Moment.” In it, painting merges with sculptural forms to create a three-dimensional work that addresses the idea of duality. The exhibit is marked by the on going common elements in my work, namely the use of a saturated color palette, the incorporation of papier-maché with everyday detritus, dream imagery, and portals alluding to a parallel spiritual world. This statement analyzes the thesis components and examines them in light of art …
Vulnus, Charlotte Ashley Coolik
Vulnus, Charlotte Ashley Coolik
Graduate Theses
This thesis statement is a reflection on my thesis installation work, Vulnus: Wanna’ Go for a Ride Little Girl?, The Shack, and My Tara. This statement describes the background motivation, influences, and processes that led to its completion. Vulnus originates from the Latin meaning wound or injury. The Vulnus body, a trinity of dollhouses transformed by found objects, comprises the constructed assemblage. As an artist employing precision placement and thereby composing miniature theatrical tableaus, I weave a theme in this triptych. Vulnus represents memories of vulnerability, danger, and trauma. Vulnus embodies found objects that speak of people’s lives. Items and …

“Gateway Liberalism: Catholic And Jewish Responses To Racially Transitioning Neighborhoods And Schools In St. Louis’ West End, 1945–1960”, Sarah Siegel
The Confluence (2009-2020)
When St. Louis schools were desegregated starting with Catholic schools in 1947 and St. Louis public schools after the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education decision, not everyone supported the changes. Sarah Siegel compares the responses to desegregation by Catholics and Jews in the city’s west end.
