The Disinheritance Of Power, Jared Stein May 2015

The Disinheritance Of Power, Jared Stein

Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted

Patriarchy as a system of cultural organization is entering a new period of existence where the notion of masculine predominance is challenged and the power of maleness is redressed. This shift is extremely slow and just begun, but felt nonetheless by men. Masculine identity has long been dependent on patriarchy for definition. Modern masculinity, shaped by the tenants of patriarchy, emphasizes the power of the masculine over the feminine and perpetuates the supposedly inherent entitlement of the male condition. As cultural power is rebalanced the inherited power of masculinity will diminish. The inheritance of power that has allowed men to …

On Thresholds, Jacob Muldowney May 2015

On Thresholds, Jacob Muldowney

Graduate School of Art Theses

Thresholds, as a sign for that which is transitional, are ripe with metaphorical potential. One threshold that plays a major role in my work is the veil. The veil, as an object, provides more of a visual than a bodily obstruction. Because of this, some of the most potent metaphors surrounding the veil have to do with the threshold of human perception. By utilizing various veiling techniques, my work addresses the limitation of perception from multiple angles. Ultimately, encountering the boundary line of one’s perceptual capabilities gives insight into the possibility of the simultaneous existence of things both visible and …

Rhetorics Of Engagement Across And About Faith And Worldview Difference, John Maclean May 2015

Rhetorics Of Engagement Across And About Faith And Worldview Difference, John Maclean

Theses and Dissertations

Interactions across faith and worldview difference are becoming increasingly common in many communities and around the world. These interactions can be verbally or physically violent, and even deadly, or they can be beautiful and enriching, or they can be ignored, resisted or refused. In this dissertation I put scholarship that endorses a broader conception of rhetoric in conversation with my personal experience in interfaith relations and dialogue in order to discover better ways to study these interactions. I propose and develop two constructs, "rhetorical space" and "rhetorical stance", that I use to explore and analyze people's attitudes toward and experiences …

1st Place Research Paper: Moviegoers And The Moon In 1953, Hannah E. Gary May 2015

1st Place Research Paper: Moviegoers And The Moon In 1953, Hannah E. Gary

Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize

"By analyzing the complicated production of the sexually-provocative The Moon is Blue in the early 1950s, this essay seeks to isolate the perspectives of censorship groups, artistic authorities, governmental legislatures, and the Production Code Administration (PCA) in their respective appraisals of the Hollywood industry’s movie-going public. Referencing communications between studio personnel and the PCA, as well as court documents and scholarly research, this paper highlights how the various organizations’ differing conceptions are relevant with regards to their Cold War context. This period inspired containment ideology in narratives celebrating 'universal ideals and patriotic or sacred causes' through the awareness of a …
