Ruin Porn And Urban Representation In Photography: The Aesthetic And Politics Of Appropriation In "The Ruins Of Detroit", Elyse Remenapp
Ruin Porn And Urban Representation In Photography: The Aesthetic And Politics Of Appropriation In "The Ruins Of Detroit", Elyse Remenapp
Cultural Studies Capstone Papers
This project examines the politics of representation in The Ruins of Detroit, a book of photography by Yves Marchand and Romaine Meffre in order to understand Detroit as a privileged site of ruins photography, critically referred to as ruin porn. Examining the book as a representation of Detroit's decay reveals an implicit power dynamic which neglects Detroit's complex history and the lived experience of its residents. Paying particular attention to the dialectic of race and labor under capitalism, this project traces the urban history of Detroit in order to contextualize and reframe the state of ruin presented in the …

First Women at Jefferson Oral Histories
Dr. Robinson attended Morgan State University in Baltimore for her undergraduate degree before coming to the University of Pennsylvania for graduate school. However, she soon realized that she was more interested in medicine than bench research so after completing her first year of graduate school she transferred to Jefferson Medical College. After graduating in 1974 Dr. Robinson went to Martin Luther King Junior General Hospital in Los Angeles for her residency in Pediatrics. She then went to New York University to pursue a fellowship in Adolescent Pediatrics. Upon finishing her fellowship she worked briefly at DC General Hospital before accepting …
The Rhetoric Of Nineteenth Century British Anti-Vaccinators: An Interdisciplinary Movement Of Medicine, Religion, Class, And Popular Culture, Madison P. Walter
The Rhetoric Of Nineteenth Century British Anti-Vaccinators: An Interdisciplinary Movement Of Medicine, Religion, Class, And Popular Culture, Madison P. Walter
Student Scholarship
Since the introduction of vaccination in 1796 by Edward Jenner, there has been a continuous debate regarding the practice of vaccination. The debate initially focused on ethical and religious opposition to vaccination, but quickly turned towards politics following the passing of compulsory vaccination laws in England in 1853. This politically charged debate regarding compulsion is what remains in the forefront of the minds of anti-vaccinators today. Does the government have the right to force vaccination upon its citizens?
This project is not an examination of ethics or the role of the government, and therefore does not seek to answer this …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2015-05-15, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Tip's Book Of Tips: Dating In Dc, August E. Shitama
Tip's Book Of Tips: Dating In Dc, August E. Shitama
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
August Shitama’s collection of short stories is a bitingly frank look into the experiences of a deaf, gay college student navigating the dating world in Washington, DC. Written from some of Shitama’s own experiences, the stories could be considered semi-autobiographical, but with enough embellishments and changes to fit the satirical fiction genre. The critical introduction covers the influences for Shitama’s writing in regard to the theme and style, thematically from bestselling gay authors, David Sedaris and Augusten Burroughs as well as Deaf gay author Raymond Luczak, and stylistically from gay Deaf writer Derrick Behm as well as Shitama’s favorite satirical …

Westward Expansion — The Final Journey From Maine To California: An Illustrated Thesis, James Schiele
Westward Expansion — The Final Journey From Maine To California: An Illustrated Thesis, James Schiele
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This doctoral thesis shall examine how public policy changed with Westward Expansion during the late 19th century. Illustrations played a significant role in both educating readers to what was taking place out west, as well as bringing current events to the public eye in a timely fashion. Once newspapers received word of “Custer’s Massacre,” daily accounts were printed and pictures followed in Harper’s Weekly. Thus, public opinion rose to a peak following the battle, encouraging the federal government to move quickly to bring the Plains tribes under control and protect settlers moving west. Illustrations by Frederic Remington and others tended …
The German Jewish Post-Holocaust Novel: Narrative And A Literary Language For Loss, Corey Lee Twitchell
The German Jewish Post-Holocaust Novel: Narrative And A Literary Language For Loss, Corey Lee Twitchell
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates how a constellation of German Jewish post-Holocaust novels confronts the paradox of recovering and recuperating lost stories of Holocaust victims. I analyze how works by Edgar Hilsenrath, Jurek Becker, and Fred Wander reveal a preoccupation with the innumerable stories and testimonies of the individuals who did not survive the Nazi Judeocide to contribute to the archive of experience. These novels gesture toward an epistemological alternative to this loss: they consider possibilities for recovering the unarchivable. These German Jewish authors employ a particular cluster of varied narrative strategies: the dialogic, linguistic and cultural elements of Eastern European Jewish …
The Comic Grotesque: Troubling The Body Politic In American Graphic Satire From World War I To The Great Depression, Bryna Rae Campbell
The Comic Grotesque: Troubling The Body Politic In American Graphic Satire From World War I To The Great Depression, Bryna Rae Campbell
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the comic grotesque as a strategy of critical engagement within the thriving field of U.S. graphic satire from World War I through the Great Depression. During this period, artists across the political spectrum were using disruptive bodily forms, along with references to pain, vulgar associations and crude techniques, to challenge political authority, undermine attempts to smooth over political turbulence, and address communal anxieties about social tensions and the direction of the nation. Emerging in the context of record unemployment rates, the explosion of political radicalism, dramatic shifts of gender and class power dynamics, and emerging threats of …

Why Summer Camp Matters: The Benefits Of Working At Summer Camp On Future Employment, Alec Michael Jacobson
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
After the school year ends, many students have the freedom to choose how they would like to spend their summer. Internships have become an increasingly popular option for students who seek to improve their resumes and boost their chances of landing a job out of college. This project, however, takes a look at one of the major alternatives to an internship, the summer camp counselor job, in order to demonstrate what it is exactly that camp counselors do and why this job has been critical to the success of so many individuals. Although this project does attempt to place value …
Contemporary Family Portrait: The Hidden Uncomfortable Truth Of Family Dynamics, Ji Won Park
Contemporary Family Portrait: The Hidden Uncomfortable Truth Of Family Dynamics, Ji Won Park
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
This thesis examines the hidden aspect of family dynamic and questions the idealized convention of family portraits. Based on Erving Goffman’s theatrical theory of community, family as a relaxing intimate group in the backstage, the underlying tensions, conflicts, and power play are discussed. This thesis draws upon the familial issues and treatments of Leon J. Saul and Rhee Dong Shick to evaluate the family dynamic present in our domestic settings. As the lineage of family portraits from history changed reflecting the differing family values and uncomfortable truths, the idealized family portraits are re-evaluated and questioned to offer a truer description …

Gold, Grain, And Grace: Piety And Community In Late Medieval Rome, James Allen Palmer
Gold, Grain, And Grace: Piety And Community In Late Medieval Rome, James Allen Palmer
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that as the composition of Rome's ruling group shifted over the fourteenth century its members sought reliable, autonomous mechanisms for strengthening the cohesion of their elite community. For these they turned to various kinds of pious giving, ways of generating kin-like ties by means of circulating wealth within the sphere of economic action made available by the logic of purgatory. Their efforts succeeded in creating a ruling group marked by strong ties of social solidarity. Over time, these strategies also had the cumulative effect of shifting the attitudes of the political elite toward the commune itself. Rather …
1. What Is The Relationship Of The Finite Subject To The Infinite Ground? 2. How Do We Use Where We Segregate The Subject From The Ground To Construct Reality? 3. In What Ways Can We Destabilize This Constructed Reality To Highlight Its Inherent Instability?, Calvin M. Miceli-Nelson
Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted
This essay catalogs interests within my works and traces connections between these works and particular structuralist, post-modern, and post-structuralist themes. Artists influential to or congruent with the aims of my work are also discussed within this three-part essay around these discussions present in my work: 1. What is the relationship of the finite subject to the infinite ground? 2. How do we use where we segregate the subject from the ground to construct reality? 3. In what ways can we destabilize this constructed reality to highlight its inherent instability?
