Reading The Sufi Text In The Light Of Textual Approaches: The Poetry Of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi As An Example, Abbas Sadiq Abdul Sahib May 2015

Reading The Sufi Text In The Light Of Textual Approaches: The Poetry Of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi As An Example, Abbas Sadiq Abdul Sahib

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

In this study, we attempt to offer a different interpretation of Sufi poetry, not as a purely mystical text, but as a love poem. This approach aligns with the surface meaning of the text; we emphasize the primary meaning in this interpretation, thus revealing aspects that may escape those who read Sufi poetry primarily through a mystical lens. While we acknowledge that the secondary, mystical meaning is indeed intended by the Sufi poet, given the spiritual nature of his experience, we also believe that the primary, literal meaning is equally important. This is because, despite his spiritual aspirations, the poet …

Timur Bakhtiar: His Life And Political Role In Iran 1914-1970, Naeem Jassim Mohammed

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Iran witnessed significant internal political developments in the mid-1950s that nearly toppled the country's political system. This prompted Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to seek security assistance from various international powers to establish a strong security apparatus capable of suppressing political opposition within Iran. Consequently, and in cooperation with the intelligence agencies of influential countries such as the United States, Britain, and Israel, the Shah succeeded in 1957 in establishing a security organization called SAVAK (the Intelligence and Security Organization of the Iranian State) to ruthlessly suppress his opponents. He appointed a military figure, Taymour Bakhtiar, who had a distinguished record …

Spatial Variation Of Climate Change In Drought Zones In Iraq: A Comparative Study Of A Number Of Criteria, Muthanna Fadhel Ali

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Studying drought conditions and their spatial distribution is one of the most important approaches for determining the current hydrological situation in any region of the world. Furthermore, it provides a detailed picture of the environmental situation. Drought is one of the most serious phenomena characterizing arid and semi-arid environments, such as the study area. Scientific evidence indicates that Iraq experiences varying degrees of drought both spatially and temporally, due to a combination of factors, primarily climate change, which manifests as extreme variations in several climatic elements, particularly rising temperatures. The problems and impacts of drought have prompted those working in …

The Causal Relationship Between Cognitive Control Strength And Successful Intelligence Among University Students, Ali Saker Jaber Al-Khazaei May 2015

The Causal Relationship Between Cognitive Control Strength And Successful Intelligence Among University Students, Ali Saker Jaber Al-Khazaei

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The research aimed to answer the following questions: Does strong cognitive control cause successful intelligence? Or does successful intelligence cause strong cognitive control? Or is the relationship between cognitive control and successful intelligence a reciprocal one, meaning that they influence each other? To achieve these research objectives, the researcher used Stevenson's 2002 scale, adapted by Khider (2014), and subjected it to statistical analysis using a sample of 400 male and female students. The item discrimination power and the correlation between each item and the total score were calculated. According to these procedures, all items were statistically significant at the 0.05 …

The Effectiveness Of Teaching Using The (Es) Seven Strategy In Developing The Ability To Solve Problems In The Subject Of History Among Fifth-Grade Literary Female Students, Nada Hashem Abdullah

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

God Almighty created humankind and bestowed upon them a special place among all other creatures, granting them the gift of intellect, which is the source of thought. The Holy Quran contains numerous verses that highlight the importance of thinking. God says, “If We had sent down this Quran on a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and split asunder from fear of God. Such examples do We set for mankind, that they might reflect.” (Surah Al-Hashr: 21). Through reviewing previous literature and studies, and by consulting with subject supervisors and teachers, the researcher observed a weakness in the teaching …

The Foundations Of The Islamic Procedural Criminal System In Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, Ammar Abbas Al-Hussaini, Zain Al Abidin Awad Kazim

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) was known for his high scholarly status, as he was the most knowledgeable person after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), as the Seal of the Prophets (peace be upon him and his family) said about him: “I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate, and whoever wants the city should come to the gate.” He also said about him: “The best judge among you is Ali.” From this standpoint, we decided to research the most important foundations and principles established by the …

The Rule And The Condition Of Justice In Islamic Jurisprudence Between Authentication And Interpretation (Sectarian Manifestations), Ghassan Kazem Ghayyad

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

It is self-evident that justice occupies a prominent position among the conditions for establishing the Caliphate (Imamate) for many scholars and jurists of Islamic political thought in its various stages, which interpret the breadth of its concept and meaning in covering various outlets of the ramifications of the Islamic political system on the one hand, and the nature of the jurisprudential and doctrinal structures on the other hand, in order to strengthen the aspects of the development of its intellectual proposals that include reading the contents of the relationship between Islamic sectarianism and the influence of the social, behavioral, moral, …

Integrating Hip-Hop And Cultural Relevant Lessons Into The Public School Curriculum, Sunni Ali May 2015

Integrating Hip-Hop And Cultural Relevant Lessons Into The Public School Curriculum, Sunni Ali

Journal of Research Initiatives

The infusion of hip-hop into the school’s curriculum adds value and meaning for students and teachers (Haaken, Wallin-Ruschman, & Patange). Despite the cultural shift that altered the organic framework of hip-hop, referencing this art form from its most basic construct spurs student achievement, especially females (Henry, West, & Jackson, 2010). Most importantly, it serves as a cultural-relevant paradigm empowering students’ radical engagement with instruction. In addition, it enables teachers to construct lessons that connect students to their community along with social and political aspects influencing society. Students who immerse themselves studying hip-hop lessons have shown literacy improvement and increase activism. …

Reflections On Teaching With Films In British Secondary Education, Antony Mullen May 2015

Reflections On Teaching With Films In British Secondary Education, Antony Mullen

Journal of Research Initiatives

Little research has been done into the effectiveness of using film as a teaching tool. This article reports on a three month research project which examined the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of student learning outcomes of students between the ages of 14-16 years of age, in a British secondary school. The report aligned the findings with Bloom’s Taxonomy and Kolb’s Learning Cycle to explain the empirical observations of colleagues in the English teaching profession. While the report does not fill the void in the film pedagogy research entirely, it does offer an in-depth look at three intended learning outcomes for a …

Hockey In Russia, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It may be my imagination but it seems as though every time I leave the country for a few weeks the world of sport goes through some sort of convulsion or some extraordinary developments take place. This past couple of weeks seems to have been no exception and I will come back to those later.

From “Black Is Beautiful” To “Gay Power”: Cultural Frames In The Gay Liberation Movement, Eric Denby May 2015

From “Black Is Beautiful” To “Gay Power”: Cultural Frames In The Gay Liberation Movement, Eric Denby

The Hilltop Review

In lieu of an abstract, a short excerpt is provided:

"

The 1960s and 1970s were a decade of turbulence, militancy, and unrest in America. The post-World War II boom in consumerism and consumption made way for a new post-materialist societal ethos, one that looked past the American dream of home ownership and material wealth. Many citizens were now concerned with social and economic equality, justice for all people of the world, and a restructuring of the capitalist system itself. According to Max Elbaum, the traditional narrative of the 1960s begins with an “idealistic, impassioned” youth working on voter registration …

Free Zone Scientology: The Social Structure Of A Contemporary Reform Movement, Kyle D. Byron May 2015

Free Zone Scientology: The Social Structure Of A Contemporary Reform Movement, Kyle D. Byron

The Hilltop Review

In lieu of an abstract, a short excerpt is provided:

"

The Church of Scientology has a notorious history of controversy. The sources of this controversy stem from both the legal realm (most notably in the acquisition of the legal label of “religion” and, therefore, tax exempt status) and the social sphere, with critics from both the Christian and secular “anti-cult” movements publishing polemics against the Church. There also, however, exists a third source of criticism: self-identified Scientologists who have chosen to leave the official institution of Scientology. These understudied groups, practicing outside of the Church, are known as …

The Problem Of Nomological Impossibility For Epistemic Structural Realism, Patrick Manzanares May 2015

The Problem Of Nomological Impossibility For Epistemic Structural Realism, Patrick Manzanares

The Hilltop Review

The philosophical view known as Epistemic Structural Realism appeals to the concept of ‘structure’ in order to defend a version of Scientific Realism that nevertheless respects historical considerations of ontological discontinuity between successive scientific theories. It seems that the structures of some scientific theories are only continuous with the structures of successor theories when the former are characterized as nomologically impossible idealizations of the latter, since this continuity involves allowing some quantity in the formal structure of the successor theory to tend towards some physically unrealizable limit. But if this is the case, then the earlier theory cannot be physically …

The Peace Of The Waste Land And Understanding Eliot’S Two Readings, Luke J. Chambers May 2015

The Peace Of The Waste Land And Understanding Eliot’S Two Readings, Luke J. Chambers

The Hilltop Review

There are two recordings of T.S. Eliot reading The Waste Land in existence today, one made in 1946 for the Library of Congress, and another from 1935, recorded at Columbia University. The later 1946 recording, being the only one published, is by far the more well known. The 1935 recording is of much inferior sound quality and is difficult to find. The younger Eliot recites at times with greater energy, a quicker tempo, and with markedly different phrasing and intonation. However, quite often Eliot’s recitation is nearly indistinguishable between the two recordings. The specific moments of difference reveal a great …

Late Medieval Mediterranean Apocalypticism: Joachimist Ideas In Ramon Llull’S Crusade Treatises, Michael Sanders May 2015

Late Medieval Mediterranean Apocalypticism: Joachimist Ideas In Ramon Llull’S Crusade Treatises, Michael Sanders

The Hilltop Review

The thirteenth century witnessed dramatic changes that transformed the medieval world and remain important today. The violent changes caused by the War of the Sicilian Vespers and Spiritual Franciscan movement popularized the apocalyptic ideas of the twelfth-century Italian abbot, Joachim of Fiore. The abbot's historical paradigms of biblical history influenced many southern Europeans, including the medieval mystic, missionary, and philosopher Ramon Llull (c. 1232-1316). Llull dedicated his life to converting the world to Catholic Christianity using a variety of means, including evangelical missions, Neoplatonic philosophy, and crusades. Llull's crusade treatises, the Tractatus de modo convertendi infideles (1292), Liber de fine …

Dayton Codebreaker Highlights Pride In Contribution To Wwii, Jeremy Dobbins, Will Davis

Veterans' Voices on WYSO

For some who serve in the military, their work is top secret, and the contribution they make to national security may never be publicly known. The WYSO Veterans' Voices series tells the story of Army veteran John Harshman who, unbeknownst to him, helped crack the code of the German Enigma machines. Those machines were used to encrypt secret messages during World War II.

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the adaptation experience of African American women breast cancer survivors. The African American women's perception of the influence of faith on the breast cancer survivorship experience was explored.

This study utilized the directed qualitative content analysis method, which extracted themes and patterns that emerged in a narrative content. The 15 study participants were self-identified African American breast cancer survivors. The study was conducted using semi-structured interview questions that were derived from the modes of the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM). The discussion was framed within the context of the themes …

Affecting Neoliberal Public Health Care: Interdependent Relationality Between Disabled Care Recipients And Their Care Providers, Akemi Nishida May 2015

Affecting Neoliberal Public Health Care: Interdependent Relationality Between Disabled Care Recipients And Their Care Providers, Akemi Nishida

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation, I trace the neoliberal turn of a public health-care program, Medicaid, and its effects on those who are involved in it: disabled care recipients and their care providers. Also examined is the emergence of an affective relationality between these individuals through their daily practices of care. In 1993, Medicaid went through a neoliberal turn that accelerated its privatization. I investigate the ways in which this turn--in company with the neoliberal transition of other welfare programs and the rise of a transnational care industry--further deployed a gendered, raced, classed, and immigration-based division of care labor that commodified and …

The Pulitzer Prize And Women: An Investigation Into Three Decades Of Winning Plays By Female Dramatists (1981-2009), Kathleen Potts May 2015

The Pulitzer Prize And Women: An Investigation Into Three Decades Of Winning Plays By Female Dramatists (1981-2009), Kathleen Potts

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Dramas by women had won the Pulitzer Prize six times in the years spanning from 1921 to 1958, followed by an unexplained absence of female winners from 1959 to 1980. Then in the 1980s three women won and women continued to win up until the present day. Covering three decades - the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s - this dissertation investigates these Pulitzer Prize-winning plays by female dramatists: Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley; 'night, Mother by Marsha Norman; The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein; How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel; W;t (a.k.a. Wit) by Margaret Edson; …

The Journal Of Mother Studies: A Peer Reviewed, International, Interdisciplinary, Open-Acess, Digital Humanities Hybrid Project, Martha Joy Rose

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Academic Journals are an established forum for educators and researchers to disseminate information within their field. Journals act as mediators of knowledge, advancing the canons within specific areas of study. There are currently two journals that focus on motherhood from an interdisciplinary perspective and one that focuses on fathers. However, none of these determine a specific foundational definition of what the field is, what it hopes to study, and how it will advance itself. Rather, these journals are general collections of a great number of things that touch on varying subjects regarding motherhood and fatherhood. This thesis argues for the …

Technology And The Glass Imagination: Isolation And Closeness From The Window To The Screen, Sarah Elizabeth Welsh May 2015

Technology And The Glass Imagination: Isolation And Closeness From The Window To The Screen, Sarah Elizabeth Welsh

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In computer and cell phone screens, as in 19th-century architecture, glass employs a frame to show a specific picture, and keeps us at a distance from what lies behind it. Glass' dichotomies in technology (transparency and reflection, isolation and closeness) have become stronger metaphors for our experience with technology. This paper will look at the similarities between the language and metaphors created by glass in 19th-century architecture and 21st century technology, and glass' role in connecting us to and alienating us from the world 'outside.' In so doing, the role of glass in the imagination and its impact on modernity …

"Young Men Of The Stones": Gendering The First Palestinian Intifada, Karen Lauria May 2015

"Young Men Of The Stones": Gendering The First Palestinian Intifada, Karen Lauria

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The First Palestinian Intifada (1987 - 1993) began on December 9, 1987 with riots protesting the killing of a young Palestinian man by the Israeli Defense Forces. The riots quickly grew into a much larger grassroots uprising -- Intifada -- against Israeli occupation. In the following weeks and months, the Occupied Territories were engulfed in waves of protests, demonstrations, boycotts, and other acts of civil disobedience, which continued until 1993. Although Intifada protestors represented a cross-section of Palestinian society, encompassing both old and young, male and female, a single, particular masculine trope soon came to dominate-that of young male activists …
