Reading German Girlhood: Louise Tilly And The Agency Of Girls In European History, Emily Bruce Jun 2015

Reading German Girlhood: Louise Tilly And The Agency Of Girls In European History, Emily Bruce

History Publications

This article addresses the legacies of Louise Tilly's work on women and the family in Europe for current studies of girls’ agency in history. Using my preliminary analysis of a body of German periodicals written for girls during the late Enlightenment, I propose some methodological possibilities for combining cultural histories of reading with social historical approaches to the roles played by girls and women in European social life. Tilly's focus on the life cycle as an organizing principle and the family economy as a key site of history established the importance of such groups to social historical understandings of the …

The Beginning Of Digital Wisdom, Michael J. Paulus Jr., Ryan Ingersoll Jun 2015

The Beginning Of Digital Wisdom, Michael J. Paulus Jr., Ryan Ingersoll

SPU Works

Marc Prensky, who popularized the term “digital natives” more than ten years ago, now emphasizes the need for “digital wisdom”: using digital technologies wisely to become wiser. Recent research reveals that so-called digital natives are often “digital naïves”—familiarity with digital technologies does not translate into facility with them. Incoming college students report declining confidence in their computer skills and report very modest improvements by the time they graduate. Employers report deficiencies in the technological skills of college graduates and, perhaps most troubling, studies of youth and young adults show that ethical and moral reasoning does not extend much beyond self-protection. …

Jane Austen's Liminal Heroines: Rituals Of Personal And Social Growth, Allison V. Juda Jun 2015

Jane Austen's Liminal Heroines: Rituals Of Personal And Social Growth, Allison V. Juda

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Jane Austen’s six novels all follow a liminal heroine through her journey of personal growth, ultimately concluding with the success of the heroine and her society. In my project I examine how this liminal plot structure works, combining anthropological theories of liminality (most prominently those of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner) with the narrative structure of Austen’s novels. The growth of the heroine through the phases of liminality and eventual reintegration into society is marked by several challenges to the morality of the heroine. Yet, these challenges are, in fact, tests for the society just as much as they …

Liberia: One Year Later, Aaron Baart

"While the places of the world that get ransacked by natural disasters and crises of incomprehensible proportions—places like Liberia—cry out to their brethren of humanity for aid and assistance, what we too often forget is that we who come in the form of help have our own poverties that stand in need of healing as well. I am reminded of this every time I return to Liberia."

My Plea: A Musical Portrait Of A Japanese Internment Poem By Mary T. Matsuzawa, Michael M. Momohara Jun 2015

My Plea: A Musical Portrait Of A Japanese Internment Poem By Mary T. Matsuzawa, Michael M. Momohara

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

The internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II caused the suffering and fragmentation of many families. One internee, Mary T. Matsuzawa, authored a prayerful poem entitled “My Plea” that I see as expressing her thoughts on freedom, equality, and servitude as a “cross-bearer” for the Japanese-American people. Musical imagery, text painting, and historical context are used to craft a choral setting of Matsuzawa’s poem, scored for SATB mixed choir and cello. The purpose of this work is both to draw attention to the Japanese-American internment and to portray Matsuzawa’s suffering and longing while displaying the hope and comfort she had …

The Art Of French Melodie: A Manual For Recital Preparation, Kristen Abraham Jun 2015

The Art Of French Melodie: A Manual For Recital Preparation, Kristen Abraham

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

I document my journey through the research, development and execution of a recital, resulting in guidelines for how one would achieve a future recital. This recital is focused on French mélodie, a genre of art song classified by its intense lyricism and precision. Moving through three phases: thinking, doing and reflecting, I highlight the important processes required to transition seamlessly through each. While going through the project, each step is documented in a journal to maintain the integrity of the process. My end goal is to present a “How To” manual with information on planning, preparing and ultimately presenting a …

Gender, Family, And Morality In Ben Jonson’S Volpone, Shanelle Kim Jun 2015

Gender, Family, And Morality In Ben Jonson’S Volpone, Shanelle Kim

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England, the transformation in categories of value resulting from a money economy clashed with older forms of institutionalized values. Ben Jonson’s dramatic satire Volpone (1606) diagnoses social ills arising from the emerging proto-capitalist culture of his time. Though Jonson critiques the corrosive impact of a money culture, the two distinct embodiments of moral good in Jonson’s play, Celia and Bonario, prove ineffective in battling the creeping value transformations associated with money. In part, their failure derives from systemic fissures in Early Modern understandings of the family unit and gendered roles within such a …

C. S. Lewis’S The Great Divorce: An Adaptation For Reader’S Theater, Olivia Ruiz-Knott Jun 2015

C. S. Lewis’S The Great Divorce: An Adaptation For Reader’S Theater, Olivia Ruiz-Knott

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

This project—a Reader’s Theater production of C. S. Lewis’s short allegorical novel The Great Divorce (1946)—pursues the values of truth and beauty by relating the rich theological realities of Lewis’s work through drama and voice. Reader’s Theater differs from traditional theater in that the voice, rather than blocking and costuming, carries the drama. The script is read rather than memorized, resulting in a directed, well-rehearsed dramatic presentation. This project requires the creation of an abridged script together with a substantial introduction detailing the process of production, and all elements of production from inception to a final stage performance of approximately …

Understanding Jalul Through Ceramics, Krystal C. Uzuegbu Jun 2015

Understanding Jalul Through Ceramics, Krystal C. Uzuegbu

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

Three-dimensional ceramic scans provide many advantages for research and publication. These 3-D scans can be shared for examination purposes with distant scholars who do not have access to the physical sherd. Using a special software, we can convert the 3-D color scans into 2-D computer drawings that represent the cross section of the pottery sherd, which is the standard way in which pottery sherds are presented in publication. Using the program, features that may be overlooked with the naked eye are highlighted, allowing for a more accurate and insightful analysis. My presentation will explain how ceramic analysis has aided our …

Design And Implementation Of An Interactive Animatronic System For Guest Response Analysis, Brian Burns Jun 2015

Design And Implementation Of An Interactive Animatronic System For Guest Response Analysis, Brian Burns

Phi Kappa Phi Research Symposium (Archived)

In theme park based entertainment applications, there is a need for interactive, autonomous animatronic systems to create engaging and compelling experiences for the guests. The animatronic figures must identify the guests and recognize their status in dynamic interactions for enhanced acceptance and effectiveness as socially interactive agents, in the general framework of human-robot interactions. The design and implementation of an interactive, autonomous animatronic system in form of a tabletop dragon, Kronos, and the comparisons of guest responses in its passive and interactive modes are presented in this work. The dragon capabilities include a four degrees-of-freedom head, moving wings, tail, jaw, …

Stem Education In The Foreign Language Classroom With Special Attention To The L2 German Classroom, Sarah Danielle Schoettler Jun 2015

Stem Education In The Foreign Language Classroom With Special Attention To The L2 German Classroom, Sarah Danielle Schoettler

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis tackles the issues of foreign language education, with special attention to German as a foreign language, and STEM education in the K-12, and in some cases K-16, educational system. After exploring the societal and national need for improved STEM and foreign language education programs, this thesis suggests methods of integrating STEM education elements and principals in the foreign language classroom. These methods are provided in chapters about integrating state and national education standards in the STEM fields, core academic subject fields, and foreign language teaching, and finally in chapters about the most appropriate and effective pedagogies for successful …

The Floating Men: Portland And The Hobo Menace, 1890-1915, Marin Elizabeth Aurand Jun 2015

The Floating Men: Portland And The Hobo Menace, 1890-1915, Marin Elizabeth Aurand

Dissertations and Theses

At the beginning of the twentieth century, transient laborers in Portland, Oregon faced marginalization and exploitation at the hands of the classes that relied on them for their own prosperity. Portland at this time was poised to flourish as a major population and industrial center of the American West. The industries that fueled the city's growth were dependent on cheap and mobile manual labor made available by the expansion of the nation's railroads. As the city prospered and grew, the elite of the city created and promoted an image of Portland as an Eden of material abundance where industriousness and …

Though Wallis’s Arithmetica infinitorum was one of Newton’s major sources of inspiration during the first years of his mathematical education, indivisibles were not a central feature of his mathematical production.

Wallis On Indivisibles, Antoni Malet, Marco Panza Jun 2015

Wallis On Indivisibles, Antoni Malet, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

The present chapter is devoted, first, to discuss in detail the structure and results of Wallis’s major and most influential mathematical work, the Arithmetica Infinitorum (Wallis 1656). Next we will revise Wallis’s views on indivisibles as articulated in his answer to Hobbes’s criticism in the early 1670s. Finally, we will turn to his discussion of the proper way to understand the angle of contingence in the first half of the 1680s. As we shall see, there are marked differences in the status that indivisibles seem to enjoy in Wallis’s thought along his mathematical career. These differences correlate with the changing …

Isolation Of The Individual In The Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Adam Hutchinson Jun 2015

Isolation Of The Individual In The Novels Of Carson Mccullers, Adam Hutchinson

Honors Projects

A southern novelist of the mid twentieth century, Carson McCullers is often labeled as a Southern Gothic author, and her novels reflect the violence, grotesque characters, and dilapidated settings of the genre. However, while early interpretations of her work focused on the depravity of doomed characters, more recent analysis has opened up her work to a productive understanding of social change. Her characters are isolated from the rest of society, whether by race, religion, or sexuality, but rather than highlighting their own shortcomings, these isolating factors underscore a limitation within the social structures and the need for change. This essay …
