Posh And Tawdry: Rethinking E.J. Bellocqs' Storyville Portraits, Christian Waguespack Jul 2015

Posh And Tawdry: Rethinking E.J. Bellocqs' Storyville Portraits, Christian Waguespack

Art & Art History ETDs

In this thesis I examine the contextual framework in which New Orleans photographer E.J. Bellocqs Storyville Portraits have been placed, and resituate Bellcoq's oeuvre in a vernacular context. Bellocq was a commercial photographer working in the nineteen-teens who photographed the prostitutes of New Orleans red light district, Storyville. After his death, Lee Friedlander purchased these now damaged negatives and reprinted the full plates, and in 1970 MOMA exhibited Friedlander's new prints in a formulaic, modernist fashion. The Storyville Portrait's recontexualization by MOMA, converted them from commercial erotic advertisements for prostitution in Storyville to fine art photographs, raises issues of how …

"The Four Horseman Of The Late Capitalist Apocalypse": U.S. Comic Books, Ideology, And Trauma In Post-9/11 Society, Kathryn Manis Jul 2015

"The Four Horseman Of The Late Capitalist Apocalypse": U.S. Comic Books, Ideology, And Trauma In Post-9/11 Society, Kathryn Manis

Art & Art History ETDs

In the contemporary United States apocalypse, dystopia, and catastrophe are commonplace. Indeed, both the increasing presence of fictional apocalypse in art and popular culture and the tone of apocalypticism in U.S. political, environmental, and social rhetorics, have been noted by writers and thinkers from a wide range of fields. Scholars of neoliberalism in particular have traced this popularity to the economic and political realities of late-capitalism and the ideological contradictions embedded in the evolution of capitalism to its current, immersive iteration. What has gone undiscussed, however, is the relationship of this anxious preoccupation to a prevailing, national condition; a condition …

The Ideal Citoyenne: Women, Class, & The French Revolution In Philibert Louis Debucourt's Fine-Art Prints, Kelsey Martin Jul 2015

The Ideal Citoyenne: Women, Class, & The French Revolution In Philibert Louis Debucourt's Fine-Art Prints, Kelsey Martin

Art & Art History ETDs

Philibert Louis Debucourt's (1755 - 1832) fête galante and domestic genre prints treated women, their social positions, and their experiences of love and relationships as a primary subject, and participated in the rapidly shifting political, economical, and social structure of the years surrounding the 1789 Revolution. These prints aided in the construction of appropriate and inappropriate female behavior of the ideal citoyenne through the representation of eighteenth-century beliefs regarding female sexuality and its class associations. It is in Debucourt's domestic genre scenes that the virtue and serenity of women are clear, validating women's prominence as wives and mothers within the …

Searching For Their Real Home: Dependent Black Children In Indianapolis, 1910-1940, John D. Ramsbottom

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Concerns about the future for young people, reflected in contemporary headlines, were equally prominent in Indianapolis a hundred years ago. Then, as now, children whose parents neglected or abandoned them posed a special problem. In the midst of rapid social change that seemed to threaten traditional family stability, a small corps of professionals and volunteers worked to provide a nurturing environment.

A Multi-Institutional Analysis Of Greek Affiliation And Academic/ Involvement Outcomes For African American College Students, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D., John A. Gipson Jul 2015

A Multi-Institutional Analysis Of Greek Affiliation And Academic/ Involvement Outcomes For African American College Students, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D., John A. Gipson

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

The academic and social outcomes of college fraternities and sororities remain unclear. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the characteristics and experiences of African American college students (AACSs) attending seven institutions across the United States, using Greek affiliation as the primary measure of comparison. Quantitative data were used to explore how Greek affiliation influences various academic and social involvement outcomes for AACSs. Findings suggest that involvement in fraternities and sororities is not associated with grade point average, among other academic outcomes. Findings also suggest that involvement with fraternities and sororities was associated with involvement in student organizations …

Funding Undocumented Latino/A Students In Public Higher Education Institutions In The United States, Bianca Ortiz, Donald Mitchell Jr., Ph.D.

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

While undocumented students are provided free access to a K-12 education, many undocumented students access U.S. higher education with no financial assistance. In this article, the authors evaluate three state-level policy alternatives—state DREAM Acts, state aid using “dummy” Social Security numbers, and state partnerships with Hispanic-serving institutions— to determine which alternative might be the best option for providing undocumented Latino/a students with financial support. The authors conclude by offering a policy recommendation and suggestions regarding implementation.

Political Contributions By Asian Americans: An Analysis Of The 2014 Massachusetts Gubernatorial Campaign, Michael Liu, Paul Watanabe Jul 2015

Political Contributions By Asian Americans: An Analysis Of The 2014 Massachusetts Gubernatorial Campaign, Michael Liu, Paul Watanabe

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

The Institute for Asian American Studies’ report on political contributions by Asian Americans in the 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign represented the first time that these contributions were systematically reported and analyzed.1 In that election, Asian Americans constituted 1.0% of all individual contributions. In terms of dollar value, those contributions accounted for 1.1% of the total dollar amount contributed. This report follows that initial study by examining Asian American political contributions to candidates for governor in 2014.

The 2014 governor’s race was energized by the fact that two-term incumbent Deval Patrick chose not to seek re-election. Patrick’s decision touched off a …

Introduction. Stars, Water Wings, And Hairs. Bernini’S Career In Metaphor, Claudia Lehmann, Karen J. Lloyd Jul 2015

Introduction. Stars, Water Wings, And Hairs. Bernini’S Career In Metaphor, Claudia Lehmann, Karen J. Lloyd

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Examining Bernini's works from 1665 on, from Paris and Rome, this book demonstrates the wealth of material still to be drawn from close visual and material examination, archival research, and comparative textual analysis. On the whole, this collection deals with Bernini's position as the leading creator of portraits - in oils, marble, monumental architecture, and metaphor - of some of the most powerful political players of his day. These studies speak to the growing distance of Gallic absolutism from the fading dreams of papal hegemony over Europe, and to the complexities of Bernini's role as mouthpiece, obstacle, and flatterer of …

Performing Transformation In The Community University Of The Rivers (Part 2), Dan Baron Cohen Jul 2015

Performing Transformation In The Community University Of The Rivers (Part 2), Dan Baron Cohen

Journal of Urban Culture Research

In this two-part article, I seek to present our emerging Community University of the Rivers through the languages of storytelling (poetry, song, image and theatre) to bring to life the context and pedagogy of Transformance in action, in the Afro-Indigenous community of Cabelo Seco (Portuguese: Dry Hair), founding community of Marabá city, Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon. I use this strategy to ensure that you meet and might identify with my collaborators in our Community University of the Rivers, as living subjects. By privileging human narration, I do not mean to privilege action over reflction, as our dramatic performances and …

Contemporary Textiles For Urban Living - Patterns Derived From Thailand's Lanna Culture, Jaipak Burapajatana, Porsanong Vongsingthong

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This research project aimed to establish guidelines to develop traditional woven textiles in the Tai Yuan and Tai Lue style which is a renowned heritage art form from Thailand's Lanna region for incorporation into contemporary living spaces. First, the unique characteristics of Tai Yuan and Tai Lue weaving were determined by specialists. Their analysis revealed that the uniqueness of Lanna textiles were the result of the combination of weaving techniques, materials, colors and patterns. Secondly, a survey of preferences for culture-based textile products was conducted by consumer orientated questionnaires administered to elicit contemporary pattern preferences. This survey revealed that respondents …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2015-07-01, Zack Paakkonen Jul 2015

Family Affairs Newsletter 2015-07-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Theorycrafting The Classroom: Constructing The Introductory Technical Communication Course As A Game, Carly Finseth Jul 2015

Theorycrafting The Classroom: Constructing The Introductory Technical Communication Course As A Game, Carly Finseth

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

When games are approached as a pedagogical methodology, the homologies between games and technical communication are highlighted: pedagogy that teaches people to play and succeed within certain confines; classroom assessment that provides meaningful feedback to encourage self-improvement; instructional design that incorporates gaming theory and game design principles; and usability to ensure optimum success. This paper provides an overview of these topics for instructors to consider when designing a technical writing course as a game.

Simmering, Uxue Alberdi, Nere Lete Jul 2015

Simmering, Uxue Alberdi, Nere Lete

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

“Su txikian” [“Simmering”] by Uxue Alberdi was published in 2013 as one of the stories in her book Euli Giro [A Sense of Chagrin]. As Alberdi states, “The source of inspiration for this story was an article I had read about an eighty-year-old married couple from Pamplona who had been found in their car parked in the garage after having committed suicide. "Simmering” is a response to the shock the news provoked in me […]. On the one hand, I wanted to hold onto the stereotype of the Basque grandmother. It is not typical to imagine an eighty-year-old Basque woman …

Monster Violence In The Book Of Job, Brian R. Doak Jul 2015

Monster Violence In The Book Of Job, Brian R. Doak

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

In this paper, I explore the book of Job in terms of the symbolic and ideological warfare waged between God and the human protagonist, Job. Specifically, I argue that the invocation of various kinds of creatures under the “monster” rubric (such as Leviathan, Rahab, Yamm, the Twisting Serpent, and Behemoth) can be illuminated through a consideration of contemporary work—in the history of religions, literary theory, and film studies—that categorizes the monstrous in terms of ecological disorientation, metaphors of the torn human body, and the boundaries of the “home.” Moreover, I draw on the work of Marie Hélène Huet in her …

Lemonade, Scott Sheridan Jul 2015

Lemonade, Scott Sheridan

IWU Authors Bookshelf

Translated from Italian into English, Sheridan said his greatest challenge may have been capturing the setting and tone of the novel. “It’s a period piece about early 19th-century England and written by an Italian,” said Sheridan. “I wanted to give it just a hint of Jane Austen without sounding old fashioned or archaic. The book is daring in many ways, from some of the controversial content to the experimental nature of the psychological narrative.”

Lemonade by Nina Pennacchi was published in Italian in 2014. The translated version by Sheridan is now available at amazon.com.

Five Poems From Witch In Mourning, Maria-Mercè Marçal, Clyde Moneyhun

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Maria-Mercè Marçal was born in 1952, in the middle of the fascist dictatorship in Spain, which lasted from the end of the Civil War in 1939 to the death of Francisco Franco in 1975. Marçal writes, “A l’atzar agraeixo tres dons: haver nascut dona, de classe baixa i nació oprimida” [I thank fate for three gifts: having been born a woman, to the lower class, in an oppressed nation], a phrase that is still famous in Catalan graffiti today.
