Global Chaucers, our multi-national, multi-lingual, multi-year project, intends to locate, catalog, translate, archive, and analyze non-Anglophone appropriations and translations of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Since its founding in 2012, this project has rapidly changed in response to scholars’ diverse interests and our expanding discoveries. Almost all these changes were prompted and made possible by our online presence (including a blog and Facebook group), and digital media comprises our primary means for gathering information, disseminating our findings, advertising conferences and events, and promoting the resource to other scholars. Because digital media can help disparate people traverse geographical and linguistic barriers, …
“Nede Hath No Law”: The State Of Exception In Gower And Langland, Conrad J. Van Dijk
“Nede Hath No Law”: The State Of Exception In Gower And Langland, Conrad J. Van Dijk
Accessus
This article discusses the use of the legal maxim necessity knows no law in the works of William Langland and John Gower. Whereas Langland’s usage has stirred up great controversy, Gower’s unique application of the canon law adage has received hardly any attention. On the surface, it is difficult to think of two authors less alike, and the way in which they relate the concept of necessity to different subjects (the poverty debate, fin amour) seems to support that feeling. Yet this article argues that reading Langland and Gower side by side is mutually illuminating. Specifically, this article reveals …

Hopeful Losers? A Moral Case For Mixed Electoral Systems, Loren King
Hopeful Losers? A Moral Case For Mixed Electoral Systems, Loren King
Political Science Faculty Publications
Liberal democracies encourage citizen participation and protect our freedoms, yet these regimes elect politicians and decide important issues with electoral and legislative systems that are less inclusive than other arrangements. Some citizens inevitably have more influence than others. Is this a problem? Yes, because similarly just but more inclusive systems are possible. Political theorists and philosophers should be arguing for particular institutional forms, with particular geographies, consistent with justice.
Les démocraties libérales encouragent la participation citoyenne et protègent nos libertés. Pourtant, ces régimes élisent des politiciens et décident de problèmes importants via les systèmes électoral et législatif, qui sont moins …

Woody Guthrie, America's Merry Prankster, Kristin Lems
Faculty Publications
A “merry prankster” is a colorful person, real or legendary, who pokes fun at authority and the rich, powerful, and arrogant. The merry prankster appears small and powerless, but manages to outwit his opponents, often summing up the situation with witty one-liners — signal examples from medieval history and folklore are Mullah Nasreddin and Till Eugenspiel. In many ways, Woody Guthrie is an American merry prankster. Small in stature but large of intelligence, he used his wits, musical creativity, and people skills to defend the poor against the rich and powerful. He consistently made enemies of the privileged and those …
Promising To Try, Jason R. D'Cruz, Justin Kalef
Promising To Try, Jason R. D'Cruz, Justin Kalef
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
We maintain that in many contexts promising to try is expressive of responsibility as a promiser. This morally significant application of promising to try speaks in favor of the view that responsible promisers favor evidentialism about promises. Contra Berislav Marusˇic´, we contend that responsible promisers typically withdraw from promising to act and instead promise to try, in circumstances in which they recognize that there is a significant chance that they will not succeed.

Fr 371 Writing The Self / L'Ecriture De Soi
Colby College Museum of Art
In the spring of 2015, Colby students from the course FR 371 "L'écriture de soi / Writing the Self," taught by Assistant Professor Audrey Brunetaux, analyzed a variety of written and visual texts to understand how French writers, artists, and filmmakers conceptualize the notion of the "self." Research projects on Alex Katz, James McNeill Whistler and Mary Cassatt, accessible in French and English below, enabled students to apply the concepts and theories from class to textual and visual material in the Colby College Museum of Art.
The Eucharist In An Unarticulated World, Tim Sensing
The Eucharist In An Unarticulated World, Tim Sensing
Graduate School of Theology
Ethnographic data from the lived experiences of teenagers participating in the weekly observance of the Eucharist provided rich data for an application of Bakhtinian approaches to discourse in order to inform current practice. Bakhtin’s understanding of dialogism and heteroglossia asserts that all discourse communities are located in historical situations that involve complex interactions. Each utterance takes meaning from its “actual social life.” Bakhtin gives priority to utterances that occur in context and focuses on the intentional negotiation of meaning and interpretation between author and reader, or, in this case, researcher, participant, and community. The research provides opportunity for teenagers to …

Mary Hallock Foote: Reconfiguring The Scarlet Letter, Redrawing Hester Prynne, Adam Sonstegard

It took 28 years after Nathaniel Hawthorne published The Scarlet Letter in 1850 for Mary Hallock Foote to render drawings for one of the novel’s first illustrated editions, which was probably the first ever to be illustrated by a woman.(1) It took 130 years after the publication of Foote’s illustrated edition in 1878 for Project Gutenberg to digitize and disseminate Hawthorne’s novel with Foote’s illustrations.(2) It has taken seven years for Hawthorne scholarship to commence addressing and examining Foote’s edition, and theorize what her drawings suggest about the act of seeing, for the heroine’s audiences in the book, and for …

Navigating The Use Of Biblical Numerology In Nauigatio Sancti Brendani, Darcy E. Ireland
Navigating The Use Of Biblical Numerology In Nauigatio Sancti Brendani, Darcy E. Ireland
Theology Graduate Theses
The early ninth-century Hiberno-Latin Nauigatio Sancti Brendani (“The Voyage of Saint Brendan”) is a text teeming with references to the Scriptures. The text is simply a loose, but allegorized, retelling of a supposed seven-year voyage from Ireland to find a terra repromissionis sanctorum (“Promised Land of the Saints”) somewhere in the vast ocean by the sixth-century abbot Brendan and a number of followers. The text achieves its purpose, which is the promulgation of an ideal model of ascetic life during a time of ecclesial reform throughout the island, by employing a number of literary motifs, including the doubling of a …

Urban Hum: Memory Theater Of The City, Sandra Uskokovic, Boris Bakal
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The Urban Hum platform consists of hybrid theatrical, anthropological, urban and social presentations of deliberately chosen urban, public spaces that are presented as a performative game-structure containing the elements of theatre, dance, musical, stand - up and lecture. Urban Hum emphasizes historically rooted continuities (or discontinuities) of specifi locations, by creating a tool for artists, architects, urban planners, politicians and historians, in their rethinking and reconceptualization of the city as a vibrant, dynamic, and sustainable habitat, while aiming to serve the citizens in proposing and implementing their solutions. Urban Hum is looking for those type of creative solutions that will …

Creating A Contemporary Dance Based On Traditional Techniques And Spirituality - Fusing Elements From Lanna (Thailand), Indonesia And Japan, Ronnarong Khampa
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The challenge of traditional dance to survive in a globalized world depends on the efforts of individual artists, groups and organizations based in local institutions, villages, and local festivals, and on popular entertainers..From a background as a Lanna (Northern Thailand) dancer, I studied how traditional dance is being transmitted and modernized in Japan and Indonesia. I introduce four artists from Japan and Indonesia with backgrounds in traditional dance who are trying to make their traditions contemporarily relevant. I describe some of the many forms that dance is taking in locations such as Mangkunegaran Palace in Surakarta, Indonesia and in so-called …

Our Master’S Legacy: Belief And Ritual In Mission De L’Esprit Saint, Dale Joseph Rose
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis is a folkloristic examination of the religious beliefs and rituals associated with members of a religious movement known as Mission De L’Ésprit Saint. Mission De L’Ésprit Saint is a Quebecois religious denomination which believes that their founder was the physical incarnation of the Holy Spirit, and the movement strives to continue the teachings which were laid down during his lifetime. The major components of Mission theology and history, as well as an introductory consideration of their cosmology and worldview will be the major focus of this document, as well as a consideration of the role that Folklore has …
