Never Again: The Genocide Convention In Review, William Chalmers Aug 2015

Never Again: The Genocide Convention In Review, William Chalmers

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was supposed to, as its title states, prevent any further genocides from occurring. In the event the United Nations could not prevent genocide the convention obligates all member States to intervene and punish those perpetrating the crime. Despite the existence of the Genocide Convention the world has witnessed several more cases of genocide, some of which the perpetrators have either not been punished or have been punished long after they have committed the crime of genocide. With a lack of prevention and punishment critics of the Genocide …

Crisis Y Reemergencia: El Siglo Xix En La Ficción Contemporánea De Argentina, Chile Y Uruguay (1980–2001), Verónica Garibotto Aug 2015

Crisis Y Reemergencia: El Siglo Xix En La Ficción Contemporánea De Argentina, Chile Y Uruguay (1980–2001), Verónica Garibotto

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Bound To Aim At Good Generally: A Sidgwickian Argument For Rational Impartialism, Tyler Stephen Paytas Aug 2015

Bound To Aim At Good Generally: A Sidgwickian Argument For Rational Impartialism, Tyler Stephen Paytas

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I defend an unorthodox theory of practical reason called Rational Impartialism. According to this view, one ought to have equal fundamental concern for the equal good of everyone. Central to my argument for Rational Impartialism are two of Henry Sidgwick’s axioms of ethics. According to the axiom of Equal Good, one ought to have equal fundamental concern for equal portions of the good. According to the axiom of Personal Irrelevance, the equal good of any two individuals is exactly similar qua portions of universal good. Sidgwick claims that from these two axioms we can deduce a principle …

Writing Oneself As A Writer: Intellectual Identity And Moral Agency In Contemporary Chinese Novels, Fang-Yu Li Aug 2015

Writing Oneself As A Writer: Intellectual Identity And Moral Agency In Contemporary Chinese Novels, Fang-Yu Li

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The discussion of “identity” in current scholarship on modern Chinese literature is mostly centered on the political dynamics between national, cultural, and gender identity. Contemporary Chinese language novels from late 1990s to the present, however, seem to show a sense of confusion and disorientation towards one’s existence in the rapidly changing society. Among the works that address individual’s existential crisis, self-reflexive novels are particularly intriguing as they reveal a strong sense of self-doubt on part of the author, and in particular, towards one’s role as a writer in contemporary society. This dissertation investigates this sense of self-doubt by examining closely …

“We Average Unbeautiful Watchers”: Reflexive Fans And The Readerly Stakes Of American Sports Narratives, Noah Cohan Aug 2015

“We Average Unbeautiful Watchers”: Reflexive Fans And The Readerly Stakes Of American Sports Narratives, Noah Cohan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

“We Average Unbeautiful Watchers” traces the role of the American sports fan across literary genres from the novel to the memoir to the blog post. Representing mass-mediated athletics as fundamentally narrative-based entertainments, I argue that fans function as readers whether they realize it or not. Further, while it may seem that sports narratives are “written” by athletes and assigned meaning by journalists, my project demonstrates that fans appropriate those narratives in diverse ways to form their own sense of identity. Inscribed in Don DeLillo’s Underworld (1997), Fred Exley’s A Fan’s Notes (1968), David Shields’s Black Planet (1999), and the blog …

Alternative Histories: Imagining Ancient Britain On The London Stage, 1560-1642, Meredith Anne Beales Aug 2015

Alternative Histories: Imagining Ancient Britain On The London Stage, 1560-1642, Meredith Anne Beales

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

I argue that plays set in ancient Britain helped shape early modern concepts of anachronism and history, undermining British identities and the early modern British state. While early modern English historians searched for the noble past which would undergird the creation of a modern empire, the theatre invited audiences to imagine an ancient Britain populated by noble Celts, fierce dragons, prophetic wizards, and defeated Romans, as if all these alternative stories were equally plausible. When scholars study the relationship between British history and identity, they usually bring a twenty-first century understanding of history as distinct from fiction. I show that …

The Heart Of Whiteness: Interracial Marriage And White Masculinity In American Fiction, 1830-1905, Lauren M. W. Barbeau Aug 2015

The Heart Of Whiteness: Interracial Marriage And White Masculinity In American Fiction, 1830-1905, Lauren M. W. Barbeau

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Building on whiteness scholars’ notion that whiteness can be gained, my dissertation argues that a property in whiteness, and its attendant privileges, can be lost. By examining representations of interracial marriage in American literature between 1830 and 1905, I identify marriage across the color line as one of the primary modes through which white men can lose their privilege. Interracial marriage violates what I term the marriage contract, a tri-party agreement between man, woman, and nation that guaranteed democratic rights to white men and privileges to their dependents in return for white-white marriage. Men who violated this contract by marrying …

Artificial Infinite, Brandon Daniels Aug 2015

Artificial Infinite, Brandon Daniels

Graduate School of Art Theses

This thesis examines the complex history of the sublime, specifically the sublime Void of the Romantics and the newer concept of the technological sublime. From there, I examine the genre of science fiction and it relationship to the sublime, the Void and the grotesque. I use specific examples such Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, and a few others to better understand and apply these concepts. Beginning with these examples, I start to posit what role special effects play in how these films embody these philosophical concepts.

Building on this foundation of research, I go on to …

Gesture As Revelation, Laurel Panella Aug 2015

Gesture As Revelation, Laurel Panella

Graduate School of Art Theses

Abstract

The two divergent paths of fine arts and psychological research come together to demonstrate how physical gesture and facial expression communicates significant meaning regarding human emotion and intention. The conceptual framework of these paintings arises from the artist’s engagement with peer-reviewed psychological studies on Affective Science. The paintings balance qualities of both emotional and intellectual thinking, with the goal of calling them forth in equal strength during the viewing experience. The symbolic and representational language of gesture is examined through the painting titled Precarious Extension. Dynamics of compassion and affect theory are analyzed through the painting Transmission of …

Education In China: Comparing A Country’S Curricula To Its Culture, Ashley Walter Aug 2015

Education In China: Comparing A Country’S Curricula To Its Culture, Ashley Walter

The Compass

Before embarking on my adventure to the other side of the world with my Arcadian classmates, I had already accumulated a curiosity for the education system in China and how it might interact with the culture of that country. Befriending students from Xi’an University, touring their campus, attending a lecture in the library’s American Culture Center, talking with faculty members of the nearby Training School, and doing some follow-up readings after I returned to the U.S. has given me the chance to evaluate this dynamic. My experiences in China and my supplementary research have helped illuminate the relationship between the …

Platonic And Attic Laws On Slavery, Wendy Gallagher Aug 2015

Platonic And Attic Laws On Slavery, Wendy Gallagher

The Compass

Plato called them ἀνδπάποδα (human-footed stock) and Aristotle said they were δουλοπρεπής απὀ τη φύση (servile by nature), but most slaves (δουλεἰα) were once free men and women that quickly found themselvesservants in a Greek democracy. Those that served as slaves were often repaying a debt, on the losing side of a war, or considered a slave by birth. In antiquity Athens was a city focused on knowledge and philosophy, yet they found slavery to be an acceptable institution defended by the philosophers themselves. Those that challenged slavery argued more for the unnatural aspects of the master/slave dynamic rather than …

Restorative Justice As A Strong Approach In Mediating Conflicts, Danielle Diverde Aug 2015

Restorative Justice As A Strong Approach In Mediating Conflicts, Danielle Diverde

The Compass

Mediation is a tactic that has been used in conflict resolution for a long time. These conflicts can exist incountries, in communities, or even within oneself. The main idea is to know not only that these types of conflicts exist, but more importantly, that they are all related to one another. The process of understanding plays a key role in solving conflicts, as opposed to the many circumstances where compromise is made with a gun pressed to one’s head or a treaty shoved down one’s throat. The feeling of interconnectedness is important so we canacknowledge that although we all come …

There Is Much To Learn From War Memoirs: Dissecting With The Old Breed As A Historical Source, Patrick Bigley Aug 2015

There Is Much To Learn From War Memoirs: Dissecting With The Old Breed As A Historical Source, Patrick Bigley

The Compass

With the Old Breed by Eugene B. Sledge is a war memoir of the Second World War; its personal account of war should be used as a reliable historical source. Typically, military memoirs have been seen as capricious sources of history because of the emotion, trauma, and personal affections that soldiers take from a battlefield. Sledge describes these attachments to battle and the experience of combat during the conflicts of Peleliu and Okinawa. He describes the actuality of war and how it wears on a soldier’s spirit, mind, and body. This allows the reader to personalize the war experience. The …

Narrative Rising, Rachel M. Bellwoar Aug 2015

Narrative Rising, Rachel M. Bellwoar

The Compass

In recent years television has become infamous for making the likes of Snooki famous. At the same time, the late twentieth century onwards has been one of television’s brightest stretches, an ongoing era of narrative that consists of more than arguing about a show’s romantic leads, chuckling at stereotypes played for laughs on sitcoms, and listening in awe to a wise, loner detective solve his case in the final ten minutes. All of a sudden, viewers have to remember what happens from week to week, look up charts online to keep track of characters and their allegiances, feel compelled to …

‘She Lived Happily For Seven Years’: How Official Corruption In China May Provide Lessons For America, Lucy Jimenez Aug 2015

‘She Lived Happily For Seven Years’: How Official Corruption In China May Provide Lessons For America, Lucy Jimenez

The Compass

China no longer tries to conceal its treatment of political dissidents. In early 2011, the Communist regimedecided once again to crack down on those who dared to protest government behavior. Officials had numerous human rights activists arrested or detained without due process, in an effort to prevent them from criticizing the government any further. Between February and April 2011, when “anonymous calls for ‘jasmine rallies’ in China began circulating on the internet,” 26 people were arrested for inciting subversion of state power, 30 disappeared altogether, and 200 were detained with their movements completely restricted.

Protecting Ecosystems, Culture, And Human Rights In Chile Through Indigenous And Community-Conserved Territories And Areas, William G. Crowley Aug 2015

Protecting Ecosystems, Culture, And Human Rights In Chile Through Indigenous And Community-Conserved Territories And Areas, William G. Crowley

Capstone Collection

In environmental conservation circles around the world, the contributions of indigenous peoples and local communities to the sustainable maintenance of ecosystems and natural resources are being given increased attention. Whether for cultural, spiritual, economic, or other purposes, the use of traditional and local knowledge of habitat and resource management is slowly making its way into the modern environmental movement, and is being incorporated into the dominant conservation paradigms. These managed areas, known as Indigenous and Community-Conserved Territories and Areas, or ICCAs, are defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as “natural and/or modified ecosystems containing significant biodiversity …
