From Ruin To Reconstruction: Words Shaping Identity In Undertow And Uncultured, Hannah Harvey
From Ruin To Reconstruction: Words Shaping Identity In Undertow And Uncultured, Hannah Harvey
English Senior Capstone
Undertow by Charlene Edge and Uncultured by Daniella Mestanyek Young each document the rise and fall of a religious cult—The Way International and The Children of God, respectively—and the authors’ personal experiences with cult indoctrination. Both works discuss cult leaders’ use of psychologically manipulative language to strip members’ agency and individuality, and both works demonstrate how Edge and Young reclaimed their sense of self by processing their experiences in writing. An examination of their memoirs supplemented by selections from Emily Dickinson’s poetry reveals the power of words to destroy and create, to be used by cult leaders to obliterate the …
I Am: Power From Identity In “Revelation” And No Exit, Elisabeth Edwards
I Am: Power From Identity In “Revelation” And No Exit, Elisabeth Edwards
English Senior Capstone
In the short story “Revelation” and play No Exit, Flannery O’Connor and Jean-Paul Sartre explore the necessity of self-awareness. By setting their works in confined spaces, O’Connor and Sartre push their characters to confront their deeper identities. For Mary Grace and Inez, a strong sense of self gives them the power to impose negative names upon more vulnerable individuals. For Ruby Turpin, Gracin, and Estelle, ignorance of self leaves them indefensible to harsh truths. Analyzing “Revelation” and No Exit through a philosophical and religious lens reveals that without an accurate sense of self, we risk becoming nothing more than the …

Falling In Love, Falling Apart: The Intersection Of Love And Tragedy In The Book Thief And Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah Crowe
Falling In Love, Falling Apart: The Intersection Of Love And Tragedy In The Book Thief And Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah Crowe
English Senior Capstone
The Book Thief and Thirteen Reasons Why depict love in dramatically different ways; these differences come into focus when analyzed through the lens provided in C.S. Lewis’ The Four Loves. The relationships differ in both the nature of the love they depict and the stability they maintain amid tragedy. In Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah and Clay's connection primarily embodies lust, rooted more in fleeting desire than lasting emotional depth. In contrast, Liesel and Rudy in The Book Thief cultivate a deep love, developing it through a gradual process that aligns with the stages of Lewis' concept of love.
Deforesting, Maren Olson
Deforesting, Maren Olson
English Senior Capstone
DeForesting is a collection of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry that explores the mental process of creating my stories and characters, and dives into why I am a writer at all. Using familiar tactics, and also subgenres I had never tried before, I probe into new voices, and different styles of writing. Although they are often uncertain and questioning, through that, my CNF and poetry take on a whimsical and open-ended feel. The title refers to the chimerical forest I must nurture and cut down and around in order to create these feelings and writings.
Art Meets Commerce: How Exhibitions Shape Visitor Behavior In Tourism Shopping Centers, Xi Wang, Rui Ma, Lan Yang, Jie Zheng
Art Meets Commerce: How Exhibitions Shape Visitor Behavior In Tourism Shopping Centers, Xi Wang, Rui Ma, Lan Yang, Jie Zheng
Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
Serving as prominent leisure and entertainment platforms, tourism shopping malls have evolved their appeal by integrating art exhibition centers, thus magnifying the retail ambiance. This study dived into the correlation between the incorporation of these art centers within tourism shopping environments and the subsequent consumer propensity to visit, encompassing a meticulous evaluation of both the art exhibits attributes and art exhibition center attributes. Utilizing the technique of structural equation modeling for the analysis, this research unraveled various aspects of this interplay with 437 surveys from art exhibition customers in shopping malls. It was found that all the examined factors, with …
Painting The Other: Mary Cassatt's Spanish Portraits And The Feminine Gaze, Delaney Batter
Painting The Other: Mary Cassatt's Spanish Portraits And The Feminine Gaze, Delaney Batter
Undergraduate Theses in Art History
The historical viewing of women artists, in conjunction with Mary Cassatt’s biography and later depictions of women and children, suggests that Cassatt's gender is identified within the art historical canon as an essential component to the interpretation of her work. The language attached to Cassatt's work is most often taken from discourses surrounding female-produced artwork of the nineteenth century, attaching passive and stereotypically feminine attributes like 'delicate,' 'light,' and 'tender' to the style, composition, and subjects of her works. These characteristics were among the accepted nineteenth-century descriptions of artworks, with inherent femininity translating to inherent domesticity.
Rather than further reducing …
