The Forgotten Front: Gender, Labor, And Politics In Camas, Washington, And The Northwest Paper Industry, 1913-1918, Bradley Dale Richardson

Dissertations and Theses

Southwest Washington labor history has received little examination by scholars. Focusing mainly on Seattle, Everett, Centralia, and Spokane, historians view Southwest Washington, a traditionally conservative community, to be of little importance in the state's overall historical narrative. This thesis corrects that assumption and the omission of Southwest Washington. The failure of the unionization effort in Camas impacted organization in Pacific Northwest paper mills for nearly a decade. Although workers failed to sustain their union, the events in Camas between 1913 and 1918 present an excellent new laboratory and case study to explore the intersection of gender, labor, and politics. My main message about defending the humanities and liberal arts is that divided we lose. Divided we lose. What's great about our disciplines, collectively, is the way in which they preserve and value the past, but in a context in which that past is subject to reflective and constructive critique, so that the ways in which we think about what constitutes the human keeps changing, and the collection of texts, ideas, historical events, material realities, and cultural forms we discuss with our students keeps expanding as well. 李商隱詩歌的語言風格研究 : 以詠物詩為重心, Ka Chun Wu

本文以李商隱詠物詩作研究對象，探討詩中的語言風格。從聲母、聲調、詞彙三方面，論述其詠物詩之語言特色如何形成義山詩的風格。語言是人類溝通的工具。年代愈遠，我們愈難分辨不同文學作品的差異。文藝上的感受還比較容易理出頭緒，但語言運用上，如果沒有深入研究，讀者難以僅憑閱讀便確知古典作家的語用習慣。本文分析詩中音韻特色時，借鑑語言風格學的方法，統計李商隱的語用習慣。

根據本文的分析，可以確知有以下幾項結果﹕在音韻上，李商隱詠物詩偏好用牙音與喉音字，與他徘徊低吟，纏綿綺艷的詩風有一定的關係。李商隱有刻意使用頭韻的效果來加強詩歌的韻律美感。總體而言，頭韻效果都可以加深讀者對詩句的印象，而部分頭韻用例亦有其他不同的文學功能，可分四類﹕（一）襯托，（二）借聲擬情，（三）使詩的語音結構與語義結構不同，（四）突顯題旨。聲調上，義山詠物詩喜在五言對句第三字作入聲，形成「頓挫」的音韻風格。詞彙上，義山詠物詩的季節詞彙可以創造出具體化的抒情空間，幫助李商隱抒發情感。當他在詩歌上點明時節，其情感一般是限定在某一類特殊的情感上，如﹕傷別、歸思。最後，李商隱詠物詩的季節詞彙多為偏正詞組，形成其詩設色穠麗的風格特點。

The debate over the translatability of poetry has been a long-standing issue for decades. Relatively few discussions, however, have focused on the concrete reasons of poetry being translatable (or untranslatable). Moving beyond traditional ways of elucidating the matter through theoretical argument, this study aims to investigate the question of poetry translation in a more solid, empirical manner by looking into linguistic and language-based aesthetic differences between Chinese and English, in particular their prosodic features and capacities. This article explores the ways that life writing allows transnational, transracial Asian adoptee authors to navigate their complex experiences of truth and authenticity. It also addresses the transformations adoptee authors make to the memoir genre in order to accommodate the particularities of their experiences. I analyze Jane Jeong Trenka’s foundational Asian adoption memoir, The Language of Blood, and Kim Sunée’s lesser-known text, Trail of Crumbs, paying attention to the ways that the authors’ hybridized and deliberately constructionist approaches to genre parallel some of the identity issues that are brought out in their respective books. This article offers a reading of the foodservice spaces in Elaine Mar’s memoir Paper Daughter in order to suggest changes in the way we think about class liminality. It argues that by focusing not just on the way the socially-mobile narrator experiences liminality, but also on the ways her working-class parents and co-workers experience it, we can begin to consider some of the complexities and nuances the idea of the liminal offers. In so doing, the article suggests a slightly new approach to thinking about and teaching Paper Daughter.

In "Fish Cheeks" a scant 500 words short story, Amy Tan serves up a coming of age story about an Asian American teenage girl. Tan’s setting of Christmas for a traditional Chinese dinner, shared with the American boy on whom the protagonist, Amy, has a crush, emphasizes the girl’s dual identity as an Asian American, a reality she is confronting head on. Forced to see her family traditions through the eyes of a white, Christian boy, she finds those traditions distasteful. Rather than delighting in the dishes her mother has lovingly prepared, she is revolted by them, fixated instead on …

The Illegible Pan: Racial Formation, Hybridity, And Chinatown In Sui Sin Far’S “‘Its Wavering Image’”, Caroline Porter

Drawing upon Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, this article offers an interpretation of “‘Its Wavering Image’” that explains the biracial main character, Pan’s, process of racialization. The argument is two fold: first, the paper contends that in this story, Sui Sin Far theorizes that race is performative rather than biological. Race does not come from characters’ bodies, but is rather an incorporated performance of codes. Pan’s race, then, depends not on her parentage or her biology, but on the “codes” she internalizes and embodies, codes that are fleshed out throughout the article through historical contextualization of San Francisco and Chinatown. …
