The Visual Poetry Of Marc Chagall's White Crucifixion, Janis Stair

Marc Chagall (1887-1985), was a Russian-Jewish artist who created a prolific body of work during the tumultuous era of the twentieth-century. While his artwork came under the influence of modernist trends, Chagall developed his own unique style that has often been described in terms of its "visual poetry." This paper examines how this term applies to one of his most important works of art, the 1938 painting White Crucifixion. My functional ceramic art takes into account the user, its intended function, and the spaces in which it should be used. The utilitarian object is important to our daily ritual. If successfully designed it can enhance the user’s experience. My exploration in sculptural clay work has carried over into the functional pieces I created. Careful attention is paid when designing the form, leaving a soft blank canvas for inlayed line work and deeply carved surfaces that will mesh well with the spontaneity of the firing process. I experiment with constructions of light, glass, paint, and everyday materials to create photographs which are intended to stir within the viewer a meditative uncertainty. When these translucent collages are back-lit and photographed, the resulting images appear spatially ambiguous, and resemble superimposed realities. The images in this series were inspired by ideas concerning the elusive and vulnerable nature of our emotional and creative wellsprings. I arrive at these stages through processes that subvert my preconceived ideas and allow the materials to suggest evolving compositions. The scenes are transitory, therefore the photograph serves as their point of inscription.

This thesis contains in depth instructions as to the research and creation of the They Made Their Voices Heard! exhibit. Women’s suffrage in Arkansas has been an area of Arkansas history that has not been overly studied. Arkansas became the first southern state to give women the right to vote when in 1917 women received the right to vote within primaries. Florence Brown Cotnam, Bernie Babcock, James Mitchell, and Charles Brough are all studied within this process paper and exhibit for their contributions to the women’s suffrage movement in Arkansas. Before motion pictures and color photographs, stereoscopic photography captured the attention of millions. These affordable 3-D images created a phenomenon that spanned the last half of the nineteenth century, bridged demographic and socioeconomic gaps and provoked discussions about the nature of science and art. Unlike traditional studio photographers, stereo photographers took their cameras outdoors to capture life as it occurred, giving a documentary quality to many of the images. 劉台拱（1751-1805），字端臨，揚州寶應人，清乾嘉時期著名學者。早年習治理學，後與汪中、王念孫、段玉裁等人交遊論學，確立樸學治經方向，成為揚州學派中堅人物。本文擇取端臨學術為研究對象，論文內容計有以下數端：一、後世學者所記端臨傳世著述，或卷書有異，或篇名不同。其《儀禮補疏》為畢生精力所萃，然終未見成書。故考端臨著述之刊刻過程及著寫《儀禮補疏》之始末；二、端臨所著《論語駢枝》世譽精闢，且對劉寳楠、恭冕父子《論語正義》有直接影響。本文將詳論此書，以窺端臨論語學之要義、經學之梗概；三、端臨於經史百家，皆有涉獵，僅憑《駢枝》，無法盡見其學術大體。故又擇《經傳小記》、《荀子補注》等卷進行考證，以論端臨禮學、小學、史學、理學中的考據、義理面貌；四、誦讀文章，須知人論世。本文將以文獻史料為基礎，尤重書信、文集，敘述乾嘉時期不同學術陣營之學者（如汪中、翁方綱、章學誠等）與端臨交往論學之經過，從而考察端臨學術歷程之轉變與發展；五、揚州寶應乃清初理學重鎮，曾出朱澤澐、王懋竑等朱子學大家。端臨受家學及鄉學薰陶，精於理學。後受京城漢學氛圍影響，始重考據。舊說多以棄宋就漢為論，總結其學。然端臨對漢學、宋學之態度，實非如此簡單，值得考辨；六、乾嘉時期學術論辯、漢宋之爭等議題，受到以往學術界重視。本文將以端臨個案作為切入點，從此一未為關注之新視角，對乾嘉學術思想作出區別以往之詮釋。
