What has this to do with art-science? My paintings of construction workers tell how they transform the world, turning old buildings into ghosts using jack hammers and wrecking balls. From their daily labor, they give birth to the new structures. Buildings, bridges, the houses we live in, give us a feeling of security needed to perform our daily tasks. The luxury of stasis, manifested brick by brick by laborers, is assured to be provided to those preoccupied with the function of these structures. Observing them working has given me the chance to look into another world, a constantly fluctuating world that lays the foundation for my own.

Engaging Many Minds: Nurturing Collaboration In A Steam Context, Mark Dzula

This field note describes a recent interdisciplinary project facilitated by Jeremy Gercke, an art teacher at the Bishop's School in La Jolla, California. The project creates ceramic tile markers for flora around the Bishop's School campus. The markers feature QR codes linking to websites populated with student content, including: drawings, information, and oral histories. In this project, Mr. Gercke synthesizes his interests as an artist; maximizes his social connections to mentors, peers and students; and bridges disciplines to create opportunities for interdisciplinary (STEAM) inquiry.

Ecoscience + Art Initiative: Designing A New Paradigm For College Education, Scholarship, And Service, Changwoo Ahn

The paper presents a new initiative, EcoScience + Art, which blooms at George Mason University. The creator explains the background, history, and recent activities of the initiative, and also introduces an on-going special project called “The Rain Project”, a student participatory project to design, construct, and monitor a green infrastructure (i.e., floating wetland) for sustainable stormwater management on campus. The special project is geared to design and present a new paradigm to integrate college education, scholarship, and service. The relevance of the initiative and the special project to STEAM education is discussed.

Beer And Brewing In German Culture: Bridging The Gaps Within Steam, John D. Sundquist

A university-level course on science, history, and culture of beer and brewing offers students from a wide range of disciplines a unique opportunity to learn from each other. They gain an appreciation for STEAM and the interaction of a number of disciplines while examining a subject of growing interest. This paper provides a brief description of such a course and includes specific examples of ways in which students explore science, engineering, humanities and the arts, as these areas of research come together in the study of beer and brewing.

My sculpture “Pigs Feet” has literal foundations upon casts of live pig’s feet. I locally sourced the pig’s feet before casting them. My sculpture makes use of a once cutting edge casting technology, alginate. Alginate molds were once the standard in dentistry. Alginate is an appealing casting material as it is refined from brown seaweeds, is both food and skin safe, it is suitable for educators, for artists and engineers alike.

Abstract: This work is a series of digitally altered photographs that were taken at NASA Space Center Houston. The artist transforms and reinterprets these iconic themes to meditate on the creative role of the human imagination in so-called techie or "non-fuzzy” endeavors, and also to suggest that we eschew these rigid distinctions. The practice of being conscious about the environment and how shadows, light, and movement create an intellectual space for different interpretations allows the viewer to make their own associations. Finding aid and typescript (click on "Additional Files" below) of a letter from Manuscripts Small Collection 2940. Letter, 1 August 1864, of “Charlie” to Ellen “Nellie” Sherman. Serving with Company E, 132nd Illinois Volunteers at Paducah, Kentucky, he describes an encounter with Confederate guerrillas during a strenuous scouting mission, the strictness of General Paine, his new commander, toward both citizenry and soldiers, and the execution of “Captain Hess,” a guerrilla leader, for whom “no coffin” was provided. He expresses apprehension over retaliation against men taken prisoner, but also refers to a flag of truce in effect that morning.

This study is an examination of events in a particular time and place that contributes to a better understanding of a complex culture that allowed white Protestant tolerance and intolerance of other ethnicities, religious creeds, and social and political ideologies to exist in the same petri dish of the Jim Crow South. The Olivetan Benedictine Sisters of Jonesboro, Arkansas faced early Protestant opposition to their Catholic hospital shortly after its opening and again with the arrival of the 1920s Ku Klux Klan. Simplification, as an effective visual solution, is frequently applied in modern graphic design. During my graduate studies, this method was integrated with each project including identity design, package design and print design. As a result, it not only helped clarify thoughts in the creative process, but it also helped form a relatively consistent style. However, since graphic design refers to communication via visual elements, this presents the problem of whether simplification affects the transfer of information.
