Say “Neigh” To Abuse: On The Treatment Of Horses And Mules In The Civil War, Anika N. Jensen Sep 2015

Say “Neigh” To Abuse: On The Treatment Of Horses And Mules In The Civil War, Anika N. Jensen

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

The stuffed head of Old Baldy, General George Meade’s favorite horse, can be found mounted on the wall of the Grand Army of the Republic Museum in Philadelphia. General Robert E. Lee’s horse, Traveler, received gifts and international adoration even after the war’s end, and General Ulysses S. Grant’s three war mounts, including one pony stolen from a plantation belonging to Jeff Davis’ brother, rested comfortably in fame and verdant pastures until the ends of their lives [excerpt].

Beating The Odds: Teaching Italian Online In The Community College Environment, Giulia Guarnieri Sep 2015

Beating The Odds: Teaching Italian Online In The Community College Environment, Giulia Guarnieri

Publications and Research

This study analyzes data collected from Italian language online classes during the course of four consecutive semesters at Bronx Community College in order to measure the impact that distance learning has on students’ retention and success rates in elementary courses. The results reveal that reconfiguring the online meetings to a lower percentage and implementing social pedagogies reduce course abandonment and favor the creation of strong learning communities. Furthermore, the data relative to the grade distribution shows no substantial difference between online courses and face-to-face instruction.

A Morphological Study Of The Antonymous Compounds In Chinese: How The Word Class Changes And Why, Yihan Zhou

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The majority of Chinese words are compounds. Among compounds, there is a special kind of compounds. It is made up of two antonymous morphemes. The antonymous compounds undergo functional shift. In 40% percent of the cases, the compounds have different word classes from the morphemes. The thesis investigated how the functional shift happens and why it happens.

Based on the critique of the definitions of antonymous compounds used in others’ studies, the thesis comes up with a broad definition. With the help of primary sources such as dictionaries, secondary sources, and the definition, the thesis collects 292 antonymous compounds.

The Impact Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions On The Aggravation Of The Global Warming Problem 2011, Adnan Awda Al-Taie Sep 2015

The Impact Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions On The Aggravation Of The Global Warming Problem 2011, Adnan Awda Al-Taie

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The age of our planet Earth reaches more than (5000) million years) during which the climate witnessed several changes and within different periods (.. as research indicates, Borisov. 1973, p. 20) that the climate goes through cycles or oscillations, some of which are long and include tens of centuries and others are short and include tens of years. These cycles have different effects on human conditions. Due to the importance of such cycles, many theories have emerged that attempt to explain their causes, taking the time measurement of these oscillations as a basis for that (Sharif, 1987, p. (14). There …

Magnification In The Quranic Expression: Its Types And Implications, Ali Farhan Jawad Sep 2015

Magnification In The Quranic Expression: Its Types And Implications, Ali Farhan Jawad

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The research presented a set of Quranic expression methods to indicate a unified Quranic meaning, found fragmented in books of grammar, rhetoric, and interpretation. To my knowledge, it has not been referred to as an independent study in any research or academic dissertation. The research concluded that the specific concept of glorification is the vastness and finiteness of the description, the essence of which cannot be encompassed by knowledge. It is noted in the semantic difference between the Arabic dictionary and the Holy Text in the use of glorification that the lexical evidence is mostly evidence of a renewed, actual …

Missionary Activity Of The Church Missionary Society In North Africa, Egypt As A Model 1869 - 1956, Asim Hakim Abbas Al-Jubouri Sep 2015

Missionary Activity Of The Church Missionary Society In North Africa, Egypt As A Model 1869 - 1956, Asim Hakim Abbas Al-Jubouri

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

This study examines the role played by the British Church Missionary Service in Egypt through its evangelization of Egypt's demographics and its relationship with British imperialism. The British religious presence in Egypt was determined by two important factors: the development of trade between Western Europe and the Near East, where British demand for Egyptian cotton in the nineteenth century led to large numbers of businessmen settling in Egypt. In addition, the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 gave further value to trade with Egypt, increasing its strategic importance.

Correspondence Of The Senses In The Poetry Of The Blind Of The Abbasid Era, Amer Salal Al-Hasnawi Sep 2015

Correspondence Of The Senses In The Poetry Of The Blind Of The Abbasid Era, Amer Salal Al-Hasnawi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The research is based on studying the technique of correspondence of the senses, and how the blind poet benefits from it in constructing some of his images, this pictorial style which is based in its content on the participation of more than one sense in drawing the poetic image. The blind poet has exploited this technique and adapted it to support his imagination to draw images of nature, so he created images by means of it, most of which he spread in the folds of his poetic purposes. Since these correspondence images contribute to arousing more than one sense at …
