The Genesis Of 'Hungarism': Bishop Ottokár Prohászka And The Extremist Right In 1920s Hungary, Csaba Fazekas

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Ottokár Prohászka (1858–1927) was a famous and well-known Hungarian Catholic cleric, starting from 1905, when he became bishop of Székesfehérvár. His life and works often got into the center of discussions, not only among historians and ecclesiastical circles, but also among politicians. At the beginning of the 20th century, Prohászka was also extremely popular with liberals, as his activities represented a promise to renew and modernize Catholicism. Prohászka imagined this modernization on the basis of the social principles of Catholicism, and considered the spread of a “Jewish” mentality, alien to the Hungarian nation, as the fundamental problem.

Since 1979, China has seen a renaissance of indigenous belief systems, including Daoist tangki spirit-medium practice. Tangki traditions have Neolithic roots. The founding myth is of a man who magically battled flood demons to save China. In imperial times, ordinary people, disenfranchised by the state religion and pawns of dynastic wars, created a soteriology of self-empowerment. Ordinary people would transform through spirit pos-session into warrior gods who would save the community. Millennia-old tangki traditions have diffused into the modern Chinese quotidian. In 2013, the Schweizerische Gemeinnutzige Gesellschaft (SGG I Swiss Society for Public Utility) announced a competition for a new national anthem. 1 Within a year, more than 200 entries were submitted. At the end of March 2015, six to be discussed nationwide were released. Once sufficiently distributed and found to be popular, the winning version was to be recommended to the federal government as the new national anthem.

The geographical position of the Republic of Macedonia continues to shape its religious landscape as dramatically as in the times of Byzantium or communism. Taking into account the aforementioned, this paper will encompass the legal, political and sociological aspects of the Macedonian model of secularism. In this respect, the content of the constitutional provisions suggests that Republic of Macedonia most broadly defines the right to equality, guaranteeing the same rights, independently from the religious determination of its citizens, among other things. Paul’s letter to the Galatians, according to the traditional reading, is read through a sixteenth century paradigm to answer the question, “How is a person saved?” In this traditional reading, Paul’s purpose is to establish the doctrine of justification by faith alone apart from “works of the Law” as the only way a person can be saved. Recent scholarship has examined and “read” this beautiful epistle through a different paradigm, namely an apocalyptic one. Our work in software quality for digital humanities was borne of an effort to address sustainable practices in scientific software development, where the speaker (Thiruvathukal) co-authored a position paper on the case for software engineering in scientific software development as part of an all-encompassing strategy to create more sustainable scientific software (an example of a well-known scientific software package is LINPACK). This article examines science-fictional allegorizations of Soviet-style planned economies, financial markets, autonomous trading algorithms, and global capitalism writ large as nonhuman artificial intelligences, focussing primarily on American science fiction of the Cold War period. Key fictional texts discussed include Star Trek, Isaac Asimov's Machine stories, Terminator, Kurt Vonnegut's Player Piano (1952), Charles Stross's Accelerando (2005), and the short stories of Philip K. Dick. The final section of the article discusses Kim Stanley Robinson's novel 2312 (2012) within the contemporary political context of accelerationist anticapitalism, whose advocates propose working with “the machines” rather than against them.

This article highlights the vast resources available in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU) for those conducting genealogical research. The BYU Family History Library and other library departments provide extensive collections of genealogical records in print and online as well as experienced librarians, missionaries, and staff to help genealogists find needed information about their ancestors.

"Terror As Theater": Unraveling Spectacle In Post 9/11 Literatures, Elise Christine Silva

For the purposes of this paper, I will discuss two post 9/11 novels—both of which utilize the terror-as-theatre metaphor in order to work through the 9/11 spectacle. Both Don DeLillo’s Falling Man (2007), and Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2005) explore avenues of communication and meaning making in the face of an event that many critics suggested defied language, description, and expression. Through their thematic use of performance, these texts reject a closed and inert polarized interpretation of 9/11 and invite a pastiche of interpretations and interactions.
