In no foreign conflict since the Battle of Marignano in 1515, except Napoleon's Russian campaign, have as many soldiers of Swiss origin fought as in the American War of Secession. For years the idea has pursued me to look for the traces of Swiss from the town of Einsiedeln who had settled in the city of Louisville situated on the lower Ohio River. In the year 2006 when I was on a journalistic assignment for the Neue Zlircher Zeitung related to the Benedictine monastery St. Meinrad in southern Indiana, I was fortunate to meet people with ancestors from my hometown Einsiedeln. “To Support The Southern Medical Public”: The Medical College Of Georgia As A Southern Information Agency, 1828–1861, Brenton Stewart

A traditional perspective situates nineteenth-century southern academic library culture as a late nineteenth-century phenomenon. This article challenges that assertion and traditional beliefs about the South's indifference to cultural advancement by examining the print culture of one of the South's leading educational institutions, the Medical College of Georgia. An antebellum information agency, the Medical College of Georgia leveraged its medical library, museum, and journal to transform medical information production, dissemination, and consumption in the South and represents an important symbol of southern modernity. This article presents a distinct analysis of early nineteenth-century southern medicoscientific information culture.

Reaping The Benefits Of Vicarious Trauma, Michael A. Harvey
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This article illustrates a mode of inquiry for reaping the benefits of experiencing vicarious trauma that can be utilized in interpreter education, mentoring and supervisory relationships, debriefing, and personal reflection. An adaptation of constructivist self-development theory and a narrative therapy approach are described. The latter approach includes the uncovering of what is absent but implicit, the uncovering of actions reflective of one’s personal agency, the relevant skills that one utilizes, and the social/relational history of these skills. Mitigating the risks and reaping the benefits of vicarious trauma may catalyze significant professional and personal growth such as clarification of values, self-identity, …
