Amplify: A Journal of Writing-as-Activism

In this manifesto, the author provides a window into her gendered experiences growing up female in the Middle East. In identifying the ways that women encounter obstacles to expressing their full agency in male-dominated societies, the author invites the reader to join her in redefining the narrative of what it is and means to be a woman. The manifesto ends with a call for us to become architects of a new perspective through which equity becomes reality, one where we strive collectively for peace, freedom, and the pursuit of the common good.

This piece is a found poem/collage made from different magazine cut-outs glued onto red construction paper. What inspired its creation is the book Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. In this book, Gyasi describes colonialism's over 400-year impact on the continent of Africa, the Indigenous people to those lands, and their ancestors. She does this by writing a historical fiction story of a family that started in what is now considered current-day Ghana, taking place from the mid-1700s to the early 2000s. The family starts with the mother of two sisters, Maame, who leaves her first daughter (Effia) while her village …

This review examines Ian Watson’s article, "Bloody Orkney? A comparison of the perceptions held by sailors and the reality of leisure and recreational opportunities at Scapa Flow during the First World War," published in The Mariner’s Mirror. Watson investigates the contrasting views of sailors stationed at Scapa Flow, a newly established naval base in the Orkney Islands, which, despite its strategic importance, was often seen as dull due to a lack of typical amenities. Unearthing The Hidden Transcript In Greta Gerwig’S Little Women (2019), Madison Vath

Honors Theses

In her film adaptation of Little Women (2019), Greta Gerwig expounds upon the subject of womanhood through her version of the character Jo March, specifically with the film’s portrayal of emotions and Jo’s authorship journey. Gerwig peels away the layers of the novel’s public transcript, as stated by anthropologist James C. Scott, centering instead the hidden transcript which suggests that a woman cannot thrive in a patriarchal society without community and connection with other women. The methods for my research include close reading, theoretical frameworks from feminist criticism and anthropology, and the use of secondary academic sources.

Fat activism is a movement that seeks to acknowledge and eliminate the oppression of fat people. The movement and those who participate face significant backlash, yet fat activism is understudied. We sought to understand lay theories about fat activism; that is, how everyday people think about the goals and motivations of fat activism, and people who engage in fat activism, to understand how these perceptions shape support for and backlash toward fat activism. In Study 1 (N = 294), we qualitatively elucidated lay theories of fat activism in a US nationally representative sample. We identified lay theories that both …

This dissertation tackles a central puzzle regarding the recurring legitimacy crises of the Afghan state: why, despite decades of investment and efforts by state and non-state actors, has Afghanistan struggled to build enduring legitimacy? It argues that the concept of performance legitimacy is crucial in fragile states such as Afghanistan, as it focuses on citizen’s expectations and the state's ability to deliver public services and secure support from its population. By contrasting performance legitimacy with traditional theories, such as social contract and Weberian approaches, this work deepens the understanding of how legitimacy through the needs and expectations of ordinary citizens …

This paper examines the transformative impact of mobile technologies on electronic music-making, highlighting how portable apps and hardware enable idiosyncratic approaches beyond traditional live and studio setups. Drawing on the authors’ extensive experience within and beyond Clan Analogue—Australia’s longest-running electronic music collective—the research contrasts conventional configurations with innovative mobile instruments and apps. By analysing a range of tools, from budget-friendly synthesisers to advanced smartphone and tablet apps, the paper explores how mobile technologies foster new creative possibilities. I just finished watching the series A Small Light (currently available on Amazon Prime) with my wife and 17-year-old daughter. The three of us are going to the Netherlands in a few days, me for a conference and a bit of sightseeing, and the two of them exclusively for sightseeing during my daughter’s spring break. My wife—who is obsessed with film and literature focused on the Holocaust—insisted on my daughter and me watching it, in part to prepare for some of the places we will visit.

CODE^SHIFT is a multidisciplinary “collaboratory” research space that focuses on data justice by humanizing data for storytelling, community impact, and social healing. Its goal is to address social inequalities (especially relating to race, gender, ethnicity, and indigeneity) using data, media, technology, art, and storytelling. Our activities include community-building, curriculum development, and collaborative research projects, especially focused on critical media literacies, arts-based interventions, and digital storytelling. The four main principles that guide our practice and theorizing are: collaboration, purposiveness or intentionality, actionorientation, and equity-mindedness. This project began as a single word: trend.

Hats, a children’s story, attempts to reveal the negative impact of trends by creating a world where each day brings a new trend in the hottest accessory—hats. As new hats are donned, the hats of yesterday are quickly discarded. The story highlights, alternately, the value of unique personal expression.

At the start of ENG176, this project simply aimed to define the word ‘trend’ through story. Throughout the remainder of the class further layers were added. The visual, auditory, gestural, spatial, and material modes were used to supplement the linguistic mode. These …

Combining elements from both Medieval and Renaissance eras, while mixing in a little Nordic flair, I want the costumes of Northwestern's production of Hamlet to be a representation of the times while avoiding ordinary drabness. The costumes will be clear silhouettes that speak to the history of the play, but be built in colors that bring Shakespeare's story to a vibrant life. Color schemes will help tell the story through family tree connections and bring a rare pop to this tragedy. Throughout each piece there will be a unique combination of historical accuracy and the touch of a designer's imagination.

Due to colonization, Hawaii’s economic, political, and societal structure were changed to fit the white American standard. Colonization also caused a shift in their aesthetics, including the exclusion from participation in the creation of art, and poor visual representations of Hawaiian culture in settler art, which is known as “settler aesthetics.” Settler Aesthetics is a term and theory that seeks to define how a culture’s art and beauty has been influenced by settler colonialism. Many historians have analyzed this theory in Hawaiian literature, music, and visual art, but have left untouched the field of deltiology; the study of postcards. Though …

Despite unimportance within the Pentateuch, the Binding of Isaac (the Aqedah) became central to later Rabbinic Jewish theology. In this essay, my goal was to identify early literary developments of that change in the Aqedah narratives of Jubilees, Philo and Josephus using the methodological premise that where sources of disparate backgrounds and rhetorical goals thematically overlap, they are more likely to represent more widely held beliefs – what I call “historical, cultural, and theological development in post-biblical self conception”. They are more often studied and recognized in larger narratives, such as the English Civil War or the Covenanting movement in Scotland.
