Publications and Research

The decade after the attacks of 9/11 and the fall of the World Trade Center saw a proliferation of New York-themed literary anthologies from a wide range of publishers. With titles like Poetry After 9/11, Manhattan Sonnet, Poems of New York, Writing New York, and I Speak of the City, these texts variously reflect upon their own post-9/11 plurivocality as preservative, regenerative, and reconstructive. However, the work of such anthologies is more complex than filling with plurivocality the physical and emotional hole of Ground Zero. These regional collections operate on the dilemma of all anthologies: that between collecting and editing. …

Perhaps, under the consciousness of today, “neoliberalism” has defined our world during the previous and current centuries more than any other socioeconomic system. But the evolution of this ideology, which initially aimed to enhance, or rather, reinvent capitalism and individual freedom, has, in essence, induced an unrecognized problem. I argue that neoliberalism is the catalyst for much of the hostility in this globalized society where tensions and poverty are casualties of individual and corporate prosperity. Because of this revelation, I argue that neoliberalism inadvertently instills violence that is both unseen and gendered. In order to formulate my argument, I introduce …

Introduction

The prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders is very common. The main objective of the study was to identify any association between the severity of musculoskeletal symptoms and treatment choice by workers in automobile manufacturing plants.

Methods

A cross-sectional study of 1017 production workers in six automobile manufacturing plants was performed. The study included the structured interviews to determine symptoms, preexisting personal risk factors, treatment choices (health care provider or no treatment sought), job strain, and job satisfaction. Nordic style questionnaire for symptoms, Karasek’s Demand Control Model and three job satisfaction questions were used to assign symptom severity, job strain, …

Since the Neolithic period and the rise of agriculture along Mesopotamia’s “Fertile Crescent,” greater societies have formed thus requiring laws and governance to ensure their continued preservation. The Babylonian Code of Hammurabi is one such example of how agricultural technologies directly created new social and institutional structures in codifying slavery into law, or how mercantile transactions are to be conducted. Similarly, GMOs are the result of modern agricultural technologies that are altering laws and society as a result of their implementation. Like Blood From A Stone: Teasing Out Social Difference From Lithic Production Debris At Kolomoki (9er1), Martin Menz

Early phases of Kolomoki’s occupation have been characterized as relatively egalitarian, with little evidence for status differentiation. However, patterned variability in lithic raw material use and intensity of production in domestic areas suggests heterogeneity in the community at multiple scales. In light of Kolomoki’s emphasis on communal ceremony, internal divisions between groups of households highlight the tension between public and private expressions of status and social solidarity. New radiocarbon dates from the southern margins of the village have allowed us to assess the contemporaneity of this pattern, and by extension, the chronology of village aggregation.

Concrete consists of aggregates, which harden with time, and the transportation of concrete mixture within the plant is a significant problem. This will not only increase the overall maintenance cost, but will lead to loss of raw materials, affect the rate of production, and reduce the lifetime of concrete handling equipment.

Deaf women experience sexual assault at alarmingly higher rates when compared to their hearing counterparts, but little is known about their disclosure trends (Anderson & Leigh, 2011; Elliott & Pick, 2015). It has been reported that nearly one in five women has experienced rape in her lifetime (NISVS, 2011). This number only reflects the number of women who have disclosed, or told another person or agency about their experience. Rape survivors are a hidden population where only the survivor and the perpetrator know this crime has occurred (Campbell, Sefl, Wasco, & Ahrens, 2004). Though there is a scarcity of information …

Social justice benefits from a unified foundation of shared basic beliefs. There are still too few global, evidence-based documents that provide standardized language and vision through which social justice standards, policy and legal actions can be created, compared and amended.

This is a broad, evidence-based public health report on best practices to foster “achievement of the highest attainable standard of sexual health”. It frames this goal as intimately related to the protection of human rights, the right to non-discrimination and to health information and services.

While other reports link laws impacting human rights and health, this specific focus on laws …

Online communities are receiving praise for providing new frontiers to marginalized populations with disabilities and LGBTQ identities. They provide unique outlets to generate media from within the community, which in turn influences broader national discussions among the public, mainstream media, and officials. Moreover, participation in online "Crip" and LGBTQ cultures present safe forums for populations to overcome geographic boundaries and control the disclosure of identities. This aspatial conception of emerging online communities is thus said to unite marginalized identities and provide meaningful representation of community members.

Allies take direction from the excluded group about the form(s) that support should take. Allies understand that exclusion and oppression is harmful to all of society.

Allyship requires unlearning the beliefs, cognitive and/or affective responses and behaviors embedded in the privileged status.

Do Predictive Brain Implants Threaten Patient Autonomy Or Authenticity?, Eldar Sarajlic

In this commentary, I discuss this Frederic Gilbert's claim that predictive brain implants (PBIs) threaten persons’ autonomy by diminishing their postoperative experience of self-control. Contrary to Gilbert, I suggest that PBIs do not pose a significant threat to patient’s autonomy, as self-control, but rather to his or her sense of authenticity. My claim is that the language of authenticity, already introduced in the recent bioethical literature, may offer a better way to voice some of the concerns with PBIs that Gilbert recognized.

Joan Morgan is the author of “When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost’, activist, and doctoral student. She is of Jamaican descent. Her parents came to the United States and settled in the Bronx near Crotona Park. Her father was one of the founding members of the Jamaican Labor party; she calls the Bustamante's her “godparents.” He was also a member of the Jamaica Freedom League while in the Bronx.
