The Arkansas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, functions as a not-for-profit, philanthropic entity within the breast cancer movement, which gained momentum in the 1980s. This process paper delves into how the Susan G. Komen Arkansas piece fits into the puzzle that is the breast cancer movement. I assessed the breast cancer movement and the development of medical philanthropic entities. The paper also covers methodology and guidelines followed throughout the project. In the 21st century, rhetoricians and writers have taken different stances on the writing process and the pros and cons of free writing, journal writing, and blogging. With these looming theory wars, the author of this thesis wanted to show that there is a benefit to expressivist theory as part of the writing process. Colleges and universities are seeing an increase in students seeking accommodations for non-visible disabilities, like attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia. To better understand the expectations of learning disabled students, instructors of First Year Composition (FYC) courses as well as faculty and administrators are in need of information to help understand the problems affecting this population of students and the best way to teach them and know what to do. Word-Length Correlations And Memory In Large Texts: A Visibility Network Analysis, Lev Guzmán-Vargas, Bibiana Obregón-Quintana, Daniel Aguilar-Velázquez, Ricardo Hernández-Pérez, Larry S. Liebovitch

Publications and Research

We study the correlation properties of word lengths in large texts from 30 ebooks in the English language from the Gutenberg Project (www.gutenberg.org) using the natural visibility graph method (NVG). NVG converts a time series into a graph and then analyzes its graph properties. First, the original sequence of words is transformed into a sequence of values containing the length of each word, and then, it is integrated. Next, we apply the NVG to the integrated word-length series and construct the network. We show that the degree distribution of that network follows a power law, P(k)∼k−γP(k)∼k-γ, with two regimes, which …

Infection with intestinal helminths results in immunological changes that influence the odds of comorbid infections, and might also affect fecundity by inducing immunological states supportive of conception and pregnancy. Here we investigate associations between intestinal helminths and fertility in human females, utilizing nine years of longitudinal data from 986 Bolivian forger-horticulturalists, experiencing natural fertility and a 70% helminth prevalence. We find that different species of helminth are associated with opposing effects on fecundity. Infection with roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) is associated with earlier first births and shortened interbirth intervals, while infection with hookworm is associated with delayed first pregnancy and extended …

Solomon Munger enlisted in the Union Army in 1862. A Michigander, Munger served in the 2nd Missouri Cavalry, also known as Merrill’s Horse. The separation from his family was particularly difficult on Munger and he regularly wrote letters home, detailing his experiences as he and his unit fought in both Missouri and Arkansas. These letters are an intimate look at the struggle of one soldier and his family as he tried to balance his military duties with the economic needs of his family at home.

The term “in Christ” is widely recognized within the Christian Church as a signature term of the Apostle Paul. But while the term is recognized as fundamental to his theology, occurring 180 times specifically and 300 times generally, functional usage is minimal. However, when the origin of the term is seen in its original context of the Damascus Road Event Encounter, the unique mystical nature of the term begins to come into focus. At that event the Messiah introduces Paul to a concept that much later (twentieth century) Kenneth Burke labels “identification,” who explains at length identification’s operational dynamics. My …

There is psychological, historical, and scientific research into the social implications of media and the responsibility of audience. This thesis observed a rhetorical connection between media and the celebrity of high-profile serial killers. The research findings of this analysis began with the 1800s studying literature written in Victorian London with an appreciation for murder eventually leading into the high-profile coverage of the Whitechapel Murders of 1888 committed by history’s still most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper. This study addresses the relationship between perceptions of cultural patrimony, socioeconomic realities, and interactions with archaeological sites in two rural communities in the Naco Valley, Honduras. Palmarejo and Palos Blancos are communities situated around the Naco Valley, that share their space with two major archaeological sites.The residents of these communities interact with the archaeological sites by using their area for farming, cattle grazing, and social/recreational activities. On several occasions, the mounds in the archaeological sites have been used as a source of raw materials for construction. Thus far, the damage to the ruins by these activities has been minimal.
