The Lawrentian Woman: Monsters In The Margins Of 20th-Century British Literature, Dusty A. Brice

Despite his own conservative values, D.H. Lawrence writes sexually liberated female characters. The most subversive female characters in Lawrence’s oeuvre are the Brangwens of The Rainbow. The Brangwens are prototypical models of a form of femininity that connects women to Nature while distancing them from society; his women are cast as monsters, but are strengthened from their link with Nature. They represent what I am calling the Lawrentian-Woman.

The Lawrentian-Woman has proven influential for contemporary British authors. I examine the Lawrentian-Woman’s adoption by later writers and her evolution from modernist frame to postmodern appropriation. First, I look at the …

Inspired by a study that identified a strong similarity between Vincent van Gogh's and Jackson Pollock's painting techniques, this thesis explores the interplay between science and art, specifically the unpredictable behaviors in turbulent flows and aesthetic concepts in painting. It utilizes data from a GPU-based air flow simulation, and presents a framework for artists to visualize the chaotic property changes in turbulent flows and create paintings with turbulence data. While the creation of individual brushstrokes is procedural and driven by simulation, artists are able to exercise their aesthetic judgments at various stages during a painting creation. This thesis is designed to determine the roles played by three different men in the founding of the Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina: Thomas Green Clemson, Richard Wright Simpson, and Benjamin Ryan Tillman. It examines primary sources generated by each man and attempts to reconstruct the events of the fall of 1886 through 1918 to validate the claims of Simpson and Tillman of their roles in realizing Clemson’s dream of founding an agricultural and mechanical college following Clemson’s death in 1888. Surviving brick clamps at Grove Creek Plantation provide exceptional information about the brick industry that flourished in the antebellum era along the Cooper River. Both the topography and natural resources necessary for brick making supported the industrial production of brick along the Cooper River and its tributaries from the colonial period into the post-bellum era. At the Grove Plantation, the arrangement of clay and sand pits, work yards, wells, and clamps are still intact provide a unique opportunity to explore the brick production process as it evolved to met growing demand for building materials from nearby Charleston. Ocean Surface Shader, Kara Lauren Gundersen

The Renderman Layered Ocean Shader (RLOS) is a RenderMan displacement shader that makes it easier and more efficient to generate realistic oceans. The shader implements a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) wave algorithm to generate tileable ocean surface displacements. These displacement layers can be added to other displacement layers to increase surface detail. The RLOS can optionally generate multiple layers with editable parameters so that it is possible to create extended ocean surfaces that can be viewed up close. The result is demonstrated with an animated time-lapse.

Following is an updated list of circulating music libraries in France spanning the period of their existence, 1765 to ca. 1950. The preliminary list was published as an appendix to the article by Anita Breckbill and Carole Goebes, “Music Circulating Libraries in France: An Overview and a Preliminary List” Notes 63:4 (June 2007), 761-797 < http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/libraryscience/179/ >. Further work in the collection of publisher’s catalogs at the Bibliothèque national de France and in 18th-century periodicals have yielded ten more circulating libraries and an expansion of dates of operation for a further eleven libraries. Changes are indicated in red type.

Since the inception of ecofeminist discourse in the 1970’s, ecofeminists and feminists alike have been divided on their stances toward the ethics of consuming the bodies and by-products of other animals. A powerful cohort of ecofeminists, in part comprised by such scholars as Marti Kheel, Lori Gruen, Greta Gaard, and Carol J. Adams, have done a tremendous amount of work to situate a concern for more-than-human animals within ecofeminism and beyond.
