H. Leslie Adams (b. 1932) is a prolific and well-respected American composer, performer, and educator. He currently works as a full-time composer and travels the country promoting his music. Past faculty appointments of H. Leslie Adams include serving as an Assistant Professor of Music at Stillman College, Florida A & M University, and the University of Kansas. Over the years, he has received numerous commissions, honors, and awards including the Composer Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts to study in Bellagio, Italy, the Yaddo Artists Colony fellowship, the Jennings Foundation, and grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and …

Traditional understandings of the genesis of the separation of church and state rest on assumptions about “Enlightenment" and the republican ethos o f citizenship. The author does not seek to dislodge that interpretation but to augment and enrich it by recovering its cultural and discursive religious contexts, specifically the discourse of Protestant dissent.He argues that commitments by certain dissenting Protestants to the right of private judgment in matters of biblical interpretation, an outgrowth of the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers, helped promote religious disestablishment in the early modern West.

This paper outlines a brief historical synopsis of both language in general and the English language to set up a common knowledge baseline for the reader to understand references made regarding historical events. Next, the paper goes through common practices seen today within the realm of text messages, textisms, text speak, and the lingo used within these practices. Common practices within the technology based language and standardized English are analyzed to compare and contrast the two forms and to help answer the question of whether or not technology is harming the English language and its practices. Subjunctive Desires: Becoming Animal In Green Porno And Seduce Me, Cynthia Chris

In the series of short films known as Green Porno and Seduce Me, the director and actor Isabella Rossellini becomes animal — insect, sea creature, bird, or mammal — to act the mating behaviors of non-human animals. Both educational and playful, each video begins which Rossellini imagining, "If I were ..." But not all becomings are knowingly desired. This essay explores Deleuze and Guattari's concept of becoming animal through Rossellini's series and Franz Kafka's iconic novella The Metamorphosis.

Even Judging Woodrow Wilson By The Standards Of His Own Time, He Was Deplorably Racist, Nancy Unger

History

The news that Princeton acquiesced to student demands that the university confront the racism of Woodrow Wilson set off a series of responses. Some protest that it is unfair to judge the 28th president by present day standards. These pundits, almost all white, proclaim that Wilson must be understood within the context of his own time. The inference of such an assertion is that in times of pervasive racism it is reasonable for a leader to perpetuate it. Setting aside the assumption that morals are relative rather than absolute, let’s examine Wilson’s actions within his times.

Evidence suggests that the early economic and political success of the English in Plimoth Colony is due to the introduction of European diseases into coastal Massachusetts during the late sixteenth century. Building upon Alfred Crosby’s 1972 publication The Columbian Exchange, modern environmental historians and cultural historians recognize the important interconnection between parasitism, disease, and historic trends. It is now fairly well recognized in both the science and humanities disciplines that any study of the political and economic development of European settlements and colonization of the Americas correlates with studies and research about the introduction of foreign diseases, as well as …

Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “My Warszawa: 1980” follows the journey of well-respected academician Judith Horne as she travels to and within Poland to participate in an international conference on American culture. She has a vague connection to Poland, with remote family members who were killed in Auschwitz and a Jewish ancestry that can be seen in her features, but she considers these facts unimportant to who she is at the moment. Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Why are art and craft so widely separated in the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System? All classification systems give insight into worldviews prevalent at the time they were created, and library systems are especially illustrative of the cultures and cultural moments which shaped them. The separation of art and craft in LC, in N and TT respectively, compared to their collocation in LC’s contemporaries, Dewey Decimal Classification and Cutter’s Expansive Classification, suggests divergent views of the arts within librarianship, illuminating American views on the relative definitions of art and craft from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries.
