Expansion Of Pilot Project: Sanctuary — A Site-Specific Dance Amplifying Worship Spaces, Kaleigh Estby

24th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2025)

A noticeable gap exists in dance designed for architecturally robust worship spaces. This research project, Sanctuary, significantly contributes to the lacking intersection of site specific dance and faith. Our research expanded Sanctuary from a 25-minute 2021 pilot to an approximately 40-minute work, priming it for future commissions and residencies. The research focused on creative processing through four steps: 1) Assess and develop pilot choreography 2) Create contrasting material 3) Integrate new material with pilot 4) Document the new material with archival video. Though often characterized as a celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain achieved stardom from his lively writing rather than skills in the kitchen. As such, the sociopolitical importance of his life and work is greatly illuminated by his compulsive literary references. Through George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London, Émile Zola’s The Belly of Paris, Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and the personas of William S. This paper seeks to understand the relationship between lobbying and the development and implementation of foreign policy by the United States and the United Kingdom. By examining legislation, various websites, articles, and insights gained from my personal internship experience this paper will explore how lobbying contributes to the development of policy and legislation. Additionally, case studies on foreign economic policy and foreign lobbying are used to examine the impact of lobbying. Coastal communities around the world are at the epicenter of dynamic socio-environmental transformations driven by the impacts of climate change, shifting human–more-than-human environmental relationships, and the decisions made in response to these challenges. As environmental concerns intensify, the governance decisions made to address these impacts will determine the severity of the impacts and the future of affected coastal areas. This article explores the socio-environmental transformations in Muara Gembong, a coastal frontier in northern Bekasi, Indonesia, that once thrived as a hub for shrimp and milkfish farming but is now grappling with environmental degradation and economic decline. By drawing on feminist political ecology (FPE), the study examines how women in the region have adapted to the deteriorating environment, driven by coastal erosion, mangrove loss, and the collapse of fish pond businesses. While men traditionally dominated the local economy as aquaculturists, women have assumed critical roles in sustaining household livelihoods through creative economic activities, such as weaving wlingi laut (Cyperus malaccensis) …

This paper explores the concept of the belliphonic—a term denoting the acoustic dimensions of warfare—within the context of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, focusing on the Battle of the Five Armies. While modern war studies have mainly centered on the mechanized soundscapes of twentieth-century conflict, this study engages with recent scholarly efforts to recover the sonic textures of medieval battle. Drawing on theories of wartime acoustics and examples from medieval literature, the paper examines how Tolkien, informed by his expertise in Old and Middle English texts and his lived experience in World War I, crafts a dynamic and psychologically …

The story of the Anglican reformation is often simplified to the result of King Henry VIII's desire for a divorce; however, this paper argues that it was a complex and prolonged process marked by differing Anglican and Catholic narratives. By exploring primary sources, including letters and interviews, as well as secondary analyses, this paper discusses misconceptions surrounding the Reformation, such as its speed and primary motivations. It further examines the formation of early Anglican doctrine and the contrasting presentations of the Reformation, revealing instances of resistance, the destruction of Catholic art, and the mistreatment of churches, which are frequently downplayed …

The Laureate’s mission is to provide undergraduate students at Western Michigan University a medium through which to publish their fiction, poetry, nonfiction, photography, graphic novels, and other creative works. The Laureate strives to be a professional and engaging journal that appeals to all. The 23^rd edition of The Laureate is unique in that, despite having no strict guidelines on themes, mediums, or styles, we found that many students expressed themes of grief, recovery, self-discovery, and new beginnings. Mariachi is an internationally renowned artform and tradition whose history spans over decades and several continents. However, there are many aspects still embedded in mariachi culture that remain problematic; machismo (toxic masculinity), alcoholism, and homophobia to name a few. While there has been an increase of mariachi scholars who have critically examined these issues, mariachi culture itself has yet to address the challenges brought forth by its history of gender discrimination and homophobia and embrace practical changes that would enable the creation of a more equitable environment and further develop this living tradition. From 1865 to 1870, tens of thousands of ex-Confederate soldiers, officials, and citizens fled the South for destinations in Latin America. They did so because their defeat in the U.S. Civil War instigated an emotional and identity crisis. Ex-Confederates felt that they could no longer live in the South given the changes wrought by Reconstruction. Rather than remain in the region, many looked toward Latin American states, such as Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and British Honduras (Belize), where they believed they could create a way of life like that experienced in the Old South. In researching the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war on poverty, I sought to understand the effects on the war on the already impoverished and if the war itself increased the rate of poverty particularly in Ukraine. Conflict not only exacerbates already existing poverty (because the poor have less accessibility to shelters, aid, hospitals, religious sites, etc.), but it also increases the number of people who become impoverished. This is true of the current Ukraine-Russia conflict. This war in particular has had more drastic effects on inflicting poverty as Urban warfare has been used by Russian forces. Chocolate is a beloved treat worldwide, but its production is threatened by climate change, as cacao trees are highly sensitive to environmental shifts. Rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns, driven by global warming, endanger cacao-growing regions, potentially leading to chocolate shortages and higher prices. While avoiding chocolate consumption is one solution, it's not realistic for many. A more feasible approach is controlling growing conditions through technological innovations like vertical farming. This method, which allows for climate-controlled indoor cultivation, could offer a viable solution to ensure the continued production of chocolate in a changing climate.
