The purpose of this study was to explore music therapy with adolescents in crisis in both America and Korea. The participants openly shared their experiences during an hour video-recorded on-line interviews. After the interviews, all content of the interviews was transcribed and analyzed. Three essential categories emerged: (a) the role of music, (b) the role of therapist, …

Fish Sentience And The Precautionary Principle, Robert C. Jones

At The Intersection Of Feminism And Fast Capitalism: A Study Of Women's Literacies During A Time Of Change, Melanie Gauss Jan 2016

At The Intersection Of Feminism And Fast Capitalism: A Study Of Women's Literacies During A Time Of Change, Melanie Gauss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research in socio-historical studies of literacy have focused on the social and historical aspects of literacy. While these prior studies have illuminated how we think about the social and historical context surrounding literacy, we have not studied women's literacies in relation to the economy as much. In response, this study focuses particularly on women's literacies during a specific time period, that of the 1960s to the 1990s, which ushered in second wave feminism's fight for equality in the workplace and the change from traditional capitalism to "fast" or "new" capitalism. To develop this inquiry, and find out about women's literacies …

The Darien Scheme: Debunking The Myth Of Scotland's Ill-Fated American Colonization Attempt, Kimberly Michelle Miller Jan 2016

The Darien Scheme: Debunking The Myth Of Scotland's Ill-Fated American Colonization Attempt, Kimberly Michelle Miller

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this analysis, a critical eye will counter many previously held claims of Scottish ineptitude and ill-preparation for the nationally important, Darien Scheme, colonial venture. In the hopes of establishing a trading post on the Isthmus of Panama, and eventually a colony, the Scots set out to change their economic and political fortunes. Through a series of events and sabotage, the mission failed miserably. Much of the historiography blames this on the Scots' inability to plan and execute a mission of this scale. To counter previous scholarship, the subsequent investigation counters those claims and argues that the Scots used foresight …

Can Best Practices In Writing Instruction And Standardized Testing Coexist?, Karen Cannavino Jan 2016

Can Best Practices In Writing Instruction And Standardized Testing Coexist?, Karen Cannavino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the high school level, teachers are tasked with a twofold agenda: they must prepare their students for college level and other post-secondary writing, and they must also make sure they perform well on the standardized writing tests that are required by the state. The stakes in standardized testing continue to rise, especially in Florida. Since the passing of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002 (NCLB) and the implementation of the Race to the Top Assessment Program (RTTT) in 2009, teachers across the nation have experienced intense pressures related to standardized testing. Many schools' efforts to conform to …

Allies To Enemies: Popular Xenophobia During The Seventeenth Century Anglo-Dutch Wars, Adrian T. Van Der Velde

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the excoriating pamphlet literature of both Dutch and English origin during the three Anglo-Dutch Wars of the seventeenth century. The Dutch Republic of this time was in the midst of its Golden Age, while England was on its ascent to eventual predominance in world affairs. By looking at concepts such as staartmannen [tail-men], Duivelskind [Devil's child], or "Hollandophobia," themes of mockery, religion, and xenophobia in popular printed works - including the engraved illustrations which accompanied the texts - are observed. Ultimately the thesis argues that the pamphlet literature bolstered the regional identity of Hollander in the Dutch …

"Unblackboxing" Technology Through The Rhetoric Of Technical Communication: Biometric Technology And Ghana's 2012 Election, Isidore Dorpenyo Jan 2016

"Unblackboxing" Technology Through The Rhetoric Of Technical Communication: Biometric Technology And Ghana's 2012 Election, Isidore Dorpenyo

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In this project, I seek to “unblackbox” technology; by which I mean, I seek to, in the words of Latour, “open up” or “debug” the biometric technology used by Ghana for its 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections. Through the process of “unblackboxing,” I demonstrate the value of technical communicators to technology studies by analyzing technical documents that accompanied the biometric verification device which was adopted and used by Ghana to conduct its 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections. I argue in this dissertation that technical documentation does not merely accommodate users to technologies, but also it provides avenues to articulate broader …

Folk Songs And Popular Music In China: An Examination Of Min’Ge And Its Significance Within Nationalist Frameworks, Belinda Li Jan 2016

Folk Songs And Popular Music In China: An Examination Of Min’Ge And Its Significance Within Nationalist Frameworks, Belinda Li

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis examines the function of music within different theories of nationalism and the appropriation of folk music within the genre of min’ge. Min’ge, a term in Chinese which directly translates to “folk songs”, has generally been defined as oral musical traditions. However, due to the increased politicization of popular music since the 1930s, the nature folk music has fundamentally changed, reflecting its new significance within Chinese nationalism. Through the years, min’ge has become more useful to promoting the goals of the state than representing the musical traditions of the many different ethnic groups in China. This transformation …

Passing Strange: Embodying And Negotiating Difference In Academia, Daphne Lamothe Jan 2016

Passing Strange: Embodying And Negotiating Difference In Academia, Daphne Lamothe

Africana Studies: Faculty Books

Book summary: In recent decades, American universities have begun to tout the “diversity” of their faculty and student bodies. But what kinds of diversity are being championed in their admissions and hiring practices, and what kinds are being neglected? Is diversity enough to solve the structural inequalities that plague our universities? And how might we articulate the value of diversity in the first place? Transforming the Academy begins to answer these questions by bringing together a mix of faculty—male and female, cisgender and queer, immigrant and native-born, tenured and contingent, white, black, multiracial, and other—from public and private universities across …

Musicianship In Beginning Level String Pedagogy: A Content Analysis Of Class Method Books, Laurie Rominger Jan 2016

Musicianship In Beginning Level String Pedagogy: A Content Analysis Of Class Method Books, Laurie Rominger

LSU Major Papers

Students who begin music studies with a thorough foundation in musicianship will be better equipped to tackle the challenges of performing at a high level. When actively applying new techniques, however basic, to the goal of musical and artistic expression, the focus will shift from increasing physical technique and skill development to growing as a musician. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of musicianship in a setting that seldom receives attention in the musicianship literature: beginning string instrument instruction. This monograph examines string method books, a major deliverer of instruction within the early years of …

A Wholistic Model Of Apologetics For Equipping The Youth, Selim Kesmez

Master's Theses

Problem

While available studies indicate that biblical world view among young adults decreases in years of secular education Adventist education system in Germany is struggling to address the needs of the young adults. Percepcao Dos Pastores Da Associacao Paulista Sul Quanto Ao Direcionamento Das Ofertas Voluntarias Em Relacao As Orientacoes Da Organizacao Adventista, Oseias Pereira

Master's Theses

Problem

In the report that was presented, the Associação Paulista Sul audit department identified that in 2012, 93% of the offerings received went to the local church and 7% went to cost the Church's worldwide expansion. According to the guidelines issued by Divisão Sul Americana da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia (DSA), this amount should be 40% of the total. The Associação Paulista Sul offerings have been used to meet local needs rather than neglecting the Seventh-day Adventist Church's need for worldwide expansion.

Method

Representing The Government Of God: Christ As The Hilasterion In Romans 3:25, Valentin Zywietz

Master's Theses

Problem

In Romans 3:25, Paul describes how the public display of Christ as the i``lasthrion demonstrates the righteousness of God. However, it is unclear what exactly Paul means by the term i``lasthrion, and how it is connected to the cover of the Ark of the Covenant for which it is usually used in the LXX.

Method

The first chapter of this paper consists of an exegetical investigation of Romans 3:25-26 paying consideration also to systematical implications for Paul’s understanding of atonement and the character of God. The second chapter is an analysis of the meaning and the function of the …

Soteriological Specifics In Paul, James, John, And Peter, Dominik Buchner Jan 2016

Soteriological Specifics In Paul, James, John, And Peter, Dominik Buchner

Master's Theses

Topic

The ideas of New Testament authors seem to stand in contradiction to each other: some appear to focus on justification by faith, whereas others seems to proclaim that works need to be performed in order to be saved. It is therefore very difficult to deduce relevant practical implications from the doctrine of salvation because it is often explained in a rather superficial and dissatisfactory way.

Purpose

The development of the interpretation of the doctrine of salvation is outlined in a chapter about church history. In the following chapter relevant Bible text passages in Paul, James, John, and Peter about …

The Relationship Of The Old Covenant To The Everlasting Covenant, Ashwani Kumar Jan 2016

The Relationship Of The Old Covenant To The Everlasting Covenant, Ashwani Kumar

Master's Theses

Problem

The old covenant is often understood to be contrary to the new covenant. A distinction is made by such claims as the following: the old covenant represents the Old Testament, and new covenant represents the New Testament. The old covenant was made with only Israelites while the new covenant is made with the Church. The old covenant was based on works, and the new covenant is based on grace and is better than the old.

Purpose

The goal of this study is to present evidence that the new covenant was not established because it was different in the content …

Leaders In Search Of The Bomb: Institutional Incentives For Nuclear Decisions, Paige Price Cone Jan 2016

Leaders In Search Of The Bomb: Institutional Incentives For Nuclear Decisions, Paige Price Cone

Theses and Dissertations

Nuclear weapons hold a strong allure for many leaders. These weapons are more than tools of national security; rather, they represent international normative symbols of modernity and national identity. This symbolic power presents a strong incentive to proliferate. However, beginning a nuclear weapons program (“proliferating”) is a costly endeavor, one that requires a significant amount of resources and time. A leader who chooses to proliferate must balance the preferences of his or her domestic audience with the significant resources required to proliferate in an international system that opposes nuclear proliferation to new states. In order to understand the paradox of …
