Whimsical Pornography: Albert Dubout's Illustrations For Sade's Justine, Olivier M. Delers

In Dangereux supplement: I 'illustration du roman en France au dixhuitieme siecle, Christophe Martin explains that images were generally considered to be dangerous additions to a text, because they could not be limited to their intended primary purpose: to provide a visual translation for characters and events depicted in works of fiction.1 For even as they illustrate, images also offer a reading that necessarily shapes the reader's perception of a novel. In the process, the images themselves become texts with their own complex system of signification. As such "supplements" go, illustrations of Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade's novels …

Pleasure In Atrocity, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2016

Pleasure In Atrocity, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

As Foucault says, genealogical work can be tedious and gray, but it is also pleasurable, even when the archives one delves into are filled with hatred, violence, and injustice. This article explores that pleasure, both in dangers and its possibilities, and in the process offers a partial genealogy of corporate personhood in U.S. legal history.

Why Life Now?, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2016

Why Life Now?, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

As we struggle to understand and prepare ourselves for climate change, the effects of globalized neoliberal capitalism, and violence (both govenmental and extra-governmental) on a planetary scale, we also struggle to name what it is that we cherish and hope to foster and protect as well as what it is that, of itself opposes the forces that may well destroy us. One of the words that has emerged in this context is life.

Philosophers do well to pay close attention to any concept that attains such centrality and exercises such power in our thinking, which is one reason to be …

John Rawls’ Theory Of Justice And Mixed Conception With A Social Minimum Principle, Kevin Wu Jan 2016

John Rawls’ Theory Of Justice And Mixed Conception With A Social Minimum Principle, Kevin Wu

CMC Senior Theses

John Rawls was a political philosopher concerned with social justice, specifically the best way that society could be structured so that individual rights and duties were fairly distributed amongst everyone and division of advantages from social cooperation were optimally determined. He believed that this conception of justice rested in principles that would be agreed upon by free, self-interested and rational persons in a starting position of equality and fairness. The principles of the theory of justice are ones that are meant to enable this group of people to cooperate with each other while recognizing that individuals in the group both …

The Singing Cello: The Use Of Virtuosity And Lyricism In Selected Repertoire, Henry A. Weberpal Jan 2016

The Singing Cello: The Use Of Virtuosity And Lyricism In Selected Repertoire, Henry A. Weberpal

Music: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the repertoire of the cello from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, and how the demands of virtuosity and lyricism changed the way composers wrote for the instrument. These demands contribute to the progression of the cello as it shifts from an accompanying instrument, to that of a solo one. We will look at operas by Monteverdi and Handel; solo works by Bach; and concertos by Boccherini, Haydn, and Schumann.

Thecla Penetrates The Popular Perception, Leah Jo M. Shelton Jan 2016

Thecla Penetrates The Popular Perception, Leah Jo M. Shelton

Audre Lorde Prize

This paper analyzes The Acts of Paul and Thecla, an early Christian writing, within the framework of gender in antique Rome. Roman gender was based on performance, which is the basis of each character's gender construction in this story. Thecla undergoes a radical transformation from a passive female, preparing to be wed, to an active, ideal male who controls her independence and performs public oratory. In contrast, Paul, who appears as an ideal male at the beginning of the story, is "unmanned" by Thecla when she ultimately defies her female categorization. The Acts of Paul and Thecla exhibits the …

Indian Women’S Uplift Movements And The Dangers Of Cultural Imperialism, Hannah K. Griggs Jan 2016

Indian Women’S Uplift Movements And The Dangers Of Cultural Imperialism, Hannah K. Griggs

Audre Lorde Prize

Because women encounter unique geographic, social, political, religious, economic, and temporal conditions, applying the particular agendas of traditional western feminism to countries like India can easily become a form of cultural imperialism or lead to Orientalism. Therefore, in this essay I argue that in order to support the agency of Indian women, western feminists must step back; Indian women and men who seek women's uplift must claim post-patriarchal expressions of traditional Indian culture. Tradition does and should inform modern culture. However, Indian women's uplift movements and western feminism alike must utilize both ancient and modern wisdom in our quest for …

Learning To Live With The Other Germany In The Post-Wall Federal Republic, Kathrin M. Bower Jan 2016

Learning To Live With The Other Germany In The Post-Wall Federal Republic, Kathrin M. Bower

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

After forty years of separation, neither the West Germans nor the East Germans were prepared for the impact of reunification. But had the peoples of the two countries developed separate cultural identities to such an extent that the dissolution of the border represented merely the illusion of a return to sociocultural community? Since the collapse of the East German state in 1989 and the subsequent suturing of divided Germany in 1990, scores of books and articles have been published on the economic and political conditions that led inexorably, or less so, to the demise of the GDR, as well as …

A Clash Of Fictions: Geopolitics In Recent Russian And Ukrainian Literature, Yvonne Howell Jan 2016

A Clash Of Fictions: Geopolitics In Recent Russian And Ukrainian Literature, Yvonne Howell

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

When the vast, multinational Soviet empire collapsed in 1991, the geopolitical structure it had struggled to maintain for most of the 20111 century - often by means of brutal repression and forced remobilization of entire populations - proved itself in the eyes of many to be fatally out of sync with the epochal norm of the nation-state. By the end of the 18th century, people in many parts of the world had begun to "imagine themselves" as nations and to organize politically into states whose primary function would be to protect, nurture, and (in a kind of Romantic feedback loop) …

Listening To Afro-Latinidad: The Sonic Archive Of Olú Clemente, Patricia Herrera Jan 2016

Listening To Afro-Latinidad: The Sonic Archive Of Olú Clemente, Patricia Herrera

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications

For many Puerto Ricans and other Latinos, Roberto Clemente was more than just a baseball star. Above all, he was a symbol of hope and humanitarianism, succeeding despite the overt racial discrimination he encountered as a Black Puerto Rican. Off the field, Clemente was renowned and beloved for his involvement in charity work in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. His final humanitarian act came about in 1972 on New Year’s Eve when the plane chartered to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed into the ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. His sudden and …

Piano Sonata (Score), Gary Smart Jan 2016

Piano Sonata (Score), Gary Smart

Music Faculty Research and Scholarship

My Piano Sonata consists of four large contrasting movements. Each movement bows to tradition and convention in many ways. Yet each also aims to create something new. I utilize diverse materials in my music, materials from Americana, jazz and world musics As well as the Western European tradition. Pluralism has become a major force for me. I find the 21st century to be strikingly different than the time in which I studied and came of age. Technology has brought us all into very close contact. Today the alien does not remain alien for long; it is soon incorporated. The world …
