Excluding The Problem: Does Supervenience Resolve The Exclusion Problem?, Katelyn S. Hallman Jan 2016

Excluding The Problem: Does Supervenience Resolve The Exclusion Problem?, Katelyn S. Hallman

UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses

The exclusion problem challenges views that hold that the mental is distinct from and irreducible to the physical. I follow Karen Bennett’s formulation of the exclusion problem, which is unique in that it sets up the problem as a set of five inconsistent claims, where at least one of which must be denied: DISTINCTNESS, COMPLETENESS, EFFICACY, EXCLUSION, NON-OVERDETERMINATION. In brief, the issue is that if the mental and physical are distinct, and each is causally sufficient to bring about their effects, then our actions would frequently be overdetermined. However, since mental overdetermination isn’t something that happens frequently, the five claims …

After The Nation: Postnational Satire In The Works Of Carlos Fuentes And Thomas Pynchon By Pedro García-Caro, Rebecca Janzen Jan 2016

After The Nation: Postnational Satire In The Works Of Carlos Fuentes And Thomas Pynchon By Pedro García-Caro, Rebecca Janzen

Faculty Publications

Pedro García -Caro’s After the Nation offers a historically-based analysis of the works of Carlos Fuentes and Thomas Pynchon. It argues that satire, parody, and metafiction in the works of these two authors challenge nationalist narratives promoted by Mexican and U.S. literary and official histories. This unique contribution explores ideas beyond the nation by studying establishedauthors–it compares a canonical Mexican author, Carlos Fuentes, and the more reclusive, but equally important, Thomas Pynchon. This approach to understanding the postnational is completely unlike other approaches, because it avoids the well-traveled paths of thinking through the current era by focusing on the border …

When Helping Heals (Calvin Shorts), Tracy Kuperus, Roland Hoksbergen Jan 2016

When Helping Heals (Calvin Shorts), Tracy Kuperus, Roland Hoksbergen

Calvin Press

Over the last few decades, evangelical Christians in the United States have moved from an open embrace of development work (e.g. short term missions, poverty alleviation strategies like microenterprise, child sponsorship) to a more critical assessment (e.g. When Helping Hurts, Serving with Eyes Wide Open, Poverty Inc.).

These strategic shifts are not new. Scholars writing within the field of international development have entertained these debates for quite some time, but evangelical Christians have recently gotten very interested in the conversation. The problem is that the two sides in the debate do not capture well the reality or the prospects of …

Christians And Cultural Difference (Calvin Shorts), David I. Smith, Pennylyn Dykstra Pruim Jan 2016

Christians And Cultural Difference (Calvin Shorts), David I. Smith, Pennylyn Dykstra Pruim

Calvin Press

"Encountering cultural differences in the classroom, in the workplace, in the church, and in the public square is an everyday part of contemporary life. The chances that we will live our lives interacting only with those who share our cultural identity and ways of thinking are shrinking. Understanding culture and how cultural difference affects how we understand one another and live well together is no longer just for travelers. It has become a basic life skill. Past Christian ways of thinking about cultural difference as most important for missions to far away places do not harmonize with today's realities. This …
