Urban Appalachian Festival Proposal, Sarah Holbrook, Courtney Johnston, Ian Buchanan, Cody Stanley, Alex Umble
Urban Appalachian Festival Proposal, Sarah Holbrook, Courtney Johnston, Ian Buchanan, Cody Stanley, Alex Umble
Senior Year Experience Student Projects
We at COAL think that Appalachian culture has been marginalized by American urban centers and being an Appalachian American comes with many negative stereotypes. This is especially felt right here in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. We want to make an impact in the community in a way that lessens stereotypes towards Appalachian Americans and help the city of Columbus be more inclusive towards Appalachian culture.
We propose to do this by organizing an Appalachian cultural festival that will both address the specific needs of Franklinton and celebrate its Appalachian roots. The specific issues we wish to address include …

The Likeness Of A Beautiful Thing, Johannes H. Von Gumppenberg
The Likeness Of A Beautiful Thing, Johannes H. Von Gumppenberg
Johannes von Gumppenberg Books
In the 1990s Johannes looked back to the Philosophy of Design course he took from John Howard Benson in the 1950s when he was an undergraduate at Rhode Island School of Design. He takes this as the springboard to discuss his ideas on aesthetics -- what visual beauty is and how to make it.
The Royal Navy's Employment Of Black Mariners And Maritime Workers, 1754-1783, Charles Foy
The Royal Navy's Employment Of Black Mariners And Maritime Workers, 1754-1783, Charles Foy
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
The Royal Navy has been portrayed as an institution that embodied liberty, regularlyemploying and relying upon blacks to keep its vessels afloat and to implement Britain'sblue water policy. Despite the critical role black naval seamen played, their employmentwas shaped more by regional practices than by Admiralty edicts. The result was that blackswere often treated inequitably. Black seamen had less access to pension benefits andwere not promoted in the same numbers as working-class white seamen. In England andNew York, blacks were largely kept out of royal dockyards and received less favourablecompensation than whites. In contrast, while blacks were employed in great …

Unseen America, Jeffrey Shuster
Unseen America, Jeffrey Shuster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unseen America is a glimpse into the lives of what American society considers to be low status men. "Kumbaya" involves a Cub Scout dealing with the fallout from a neglectful father and an alcoholic mother. "Devil's Tower" is about an overweight boy trying to prove himself in front of his peers. In "True Patriots," we see two displaced working class men forced to come to terms with an America that doesn't belong to them anymore or need them anymore. "Zippo Heart" deals with a recently divorced young woman spurring on the advances of a loser coworker while dealing with her …

Mark S. Smith. Where The Gods Are: Spatial Dimensions Of Anthropomorphism In The Biblical World. New Haven, Ct: Yale University Press, 2016., Daniel O. Mcclellan
Studies in the Bible and Antiquity
Smith’s newest book, Where the Gods Are: Spatial Dimensions of Anthropomorphism in the Biblical World (part of the Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library), continues that multidisciplinary trajectory, examining early anthropomorphic conceptualizations of deity in the Hebrew Bible and in cognate literature, as well as the way place and space mediated, influenced, and constrained those conceptualizations. The salience of anthropomorphism in recent years owes much to recent publications like Esther Hamori’s “When Gods Were Men” (2008),4 Benjamin Sommer’s The Bodies of God and the World of Ancient Israel (2009),5 and Anne Knafl’s Forming God: Divine Anthropomorphism in the Pentateuch (2014),6 and …

Artificially Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning System With Ai Student Component, Denee M. Mcclain
Artificially Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning System With Ai Student Component, Denee M. Mcclain
Capstone Research Projects
Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) systems follow an accepted format, which utilizes an artificially intelligent tutor. The systems allow the user to input a sentence in the target language and the AI tutor analyzes the sentence and provides error correction. This approach can be expensive, impractical, and inflexible. Inflexibility can result in a lower quality of learning for the users of these systems. Here I present an alternative format for ICALL systems that utilizes an artificially intelligent student. This alternative is cost effective and practical because it does not require extra development time to make the artificial intelligence an …
Current Issues And Developments In Psychology With Regards To Latina/O Americans, Rachel Giddings
Current Issues And Developments In Psychology With Regards To Latina/O Americans, Rachel Giddings
2016 Symposium
Past research has shown that the Chicano/Latino community experience mental illness differently than other populations, and they are largely underserved by mental health professionals. This work explores the underrepresentation of culturally diverse individuals seeking and utilizing psychological services due to the lack of cultural sensitivity of therapists; cynicism by mental health professionals, and an outlook that therapy can be used as an oppressive tool by those in power (Sue & Sue, 1999). In short, there is much apprehension towards traditional therapeutic and intervention models in which most therapists have been educated on are based on and designed to meet the …

Ecumenical Missiology: Changing Landscapes And New Conceptions Of Mission, Kenneth R. Ross, Jooseop Keum, Kyriaki Avtzi, Roderick R. Hewitt
Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series
This book has been prepared with acute awareness of how challenging it can be to comprehend the meaning of mission and to find direction for our own engagement in it – as individuals, churches, agencies or institutions. A key resource now available to help meet this challenge is Together Towards Life, the new mission affirmation of the World Council of Churches. This volume not only offers a wide-ranging analysis of TTL but explores the century of ecumenical missiology which underpins and informs this ground-breaking text. Every change in the global landscape has required new approaches to the practice of mission …
Witnessing To Christ In North-East India, Marina Ngursangzeli, Michael Biehl
Witnessing To Christ In North-East India, Marina Ngursangzeli, Michael Biehl
Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series
The Church in India has a far closer connection to Edinburgh 1910, as F S Downs points out, that one of the Indian delegates was Rev Thankan Sangma, a Garo. This little known fact is illustrative of how, on one hand, the Church in North East India is ignorant of this legacy and continues to view ecumenism poorly and suspiciously, while on the other hand the challenges faced by the Church in the region and the social, economic and political milieu it is placed in, have been largely ignored, neglected, or worse still, identified with what is generally portrayed as …
