Slavery In Rhode Island: Awakening A Forgotten Past (Poster), Abudu Adeboye, Cassandra Caggiano, Cassandra M. Chisolm, Marisa Delfarno, Brian Nicholas

Black Studies Student Scholarship

This map serves to raise awareness about the history of slavery in Rhode Island. Despite having played an active role in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, Rhode Island’s involvement is often overlooked or omitted from what we are traditionally taught in historically influenced classes at Providence College. Instead of integrating local history and knowledge into our own curriculum, we learn about slavery through a Eurocentric, Westernized lens. We aim to challenge our narrow teachings about slavery and widen our perspectives by constructing alternative narratives that go against the metanarrative. This map displaces the untold narratives of four areas in Rhode Island: …

Making A Mess Of Everything: Excursions Through Communities, Musics, Academics, Longing, And Belonging, Kiera Galway, Deanna Yerichuk

Music Faculty Publications

This project—what we have termed a collaborative autoethnographic mapping project—grew out of conversations between two researchers who also work as choral conductors and teachers in community contexts. We found ourselves constantly struggling with the stubborn fact that we, as community musicians, engage in the very practices that we, as academics, critique. As we considered our roles as musicians and academics, we quickly realized that who we are is deeply entwined with where we are and who we are with. While we initially considered only the relationship between our professional roles as academics and musicians, we also began to realize that …

Plunder On The High Seas, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Jan 2016

Plunder On The High Seas, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

History of Cultural Contact

The word ‘piracy’ conjures infamous tales of adventures on the high sea. Often, piracy is associated with images of men screaming and ransacking ships, the look of unclean clothes and unhygienic skin, inherent violence and inherent treachery, the never-ending lust for riches - all the makings of uncivilized human beings. But the idea that all pirates fit this description is a misconception. Pirates tended to be more complex than that, and some even established special codes that denoted a social order and rules to be followed. In the Golden Age of pirates, from the 17th to 19th century, pirates ruled …

Hobbes On Natural Philosophy As “True Physics” And Mixed Mathematics, Marcus P. Adams Jan 2016

Hobbes On Natural Philosophy As “True Physics” And Mixed Mathematics, Marcus P. Adams

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, I offer an alternative account of the relationship of Hobbesian geometry to natural philosophy by arguing that mixed mathematics provided Hobbes with a model for thinking about it. In mixed mathematics, one may borrow causal principles from one science and use them in another science without there being a deductive relationship between those two sciences. Natural philosophy for Hobbes is mixed because an explanation may combine observations from experience (the ‘that’) with causal principles from geometry (the ‘why’). My argument shows that Hobbesian natural philosophy relies upon suppositions that bodies plausibly behave according to these borrowed causal …

Preaching Texts Of Multiple Masculinities To A World Of Multiple Masculinities, Cameron B. R. Howard Jan 2016

Preaching Texts Of Multiple Masculinities To A World Of Multiple Masculinities, Cameron B. R. Howard

Faculty Publications

Today’s preachers proclaim the word into a world that is fraught with dissonances about the expectations of gender roles. The Bible itself demonstrates a similar complexity, though sometimes in different modes. Ultimately, an exploration of biblical masculinity can offer preachers and their congregations new ways of navigating those intersections between the ancient text and our world today.
