From Staged Reading To Fully Staged Models For Academic Production Of New Works, Preston Yates, Timothy Threllfall

Last January at BYU, we had the incredible opportunity to work with one of Broadway’s best composures, Frank Wildhorn. This came about due to a master class that Frank was holding at BYU in October of 2013. He was very impressed with the level of talent the students that he worked with possessed. After the master class he talked to some of the staff including Tim Threlfall and thought that doing a new work at BYU would be a good idea. It allowed him not only to work on his new show, but it gave us students the opportunity to …

Betwixt: Temporality And Comfort, Laura Newman
Theses and Dissertations
I push against traditions of ceramics by purposefully inviting breakage within my work. Destruction expresses fragility, temporality, and impermanence. I consider themes of frugality, familial relations, collections and nostalgia through my investigations of clay, steel, and glass.

Culminating Project, Logan Mcgill, Nathan Balser
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During my time as a dance major at BYU I devoted countless hours to refining my technique, artistry, and performance quality in order to be the best dancer I could be. “Culminating Project” took those skills that I have spent so long refining and put them to the test in a five minute solo performance choreographed by the world renowned choreographer Stacey Tookey. This piece was meant to push me to my limits as a dancer, which is exactly what it did.

Food As A Cultural And Human Experience: Exploring The Italian Social Traditions Around Food Through Photography, Sarah Wight, Paul Adams
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Last June, I set out with camera in hand to explore the Italian social traditions around food. I wanted to capture what mealtimes mean to Italians, and how they differ from Americans. I planned to create a body of work that acts as a window into the Italian culinary culture.

Richard Nielsen, Richard Nielsen, Meg Miner
All oral histories
Nielsen primarily knew Myers through annual book sales but his wife is an alumna so he also attended some donor receptions. He observes that he and Myers shared a love of bargain hunting for books and frequently saw him at the book fair held on IWU's campus and other venues. He saw that Minor was thorough when going through book offerings and enjoyed comparing finds. Nielsen recalls Myers had a focus on sheet music and does not recall hearing of Myers getting rid of any part of his collection.

Review Of Slaves Of Our Affection: The Myth Of The Happy Pet, Katherine Allen
Review Of Slaves Of Our Affection: The Myth Of The Happy Pet, Katherine Allen
Between the Species
This article reviews Charles Danten’s Slaves of Our Affection: the Myth of the Happy Pet, outlining and evaluating Danten’s arguments for the abolition of the pet trade. The review delineates Danten’s main points; that the commodification of companion animals is antithetical to their welfare, that veterinarians, pet food manufacturers and breeders serve the dictates of the economic bottom line rather than the interests of animals, and that the majority of pet owners, while well-intentioned, are ill-equipped to meet the physiological and psychological needs of their animal companions.
The reviewer asserts that Danten’s arguments are generally successful, but suggests that …

Branching Topology: The Aesthetics And Symbolism Of Glass Trees, Michael Lyn Tracy
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses my glass artwork which I make to help me understand the world. Trees, specifically bonsai trees, are used as inspirational imagery. The work explores the physical and symbolic aspects of the trees and the relationships that develop between the maker, the object, and the viewer. The series of work split into two distinct styles and the relationships of the styles as they relate to aspects of my personality are explored.

Theses and Dissertations
As an expression of integrated languages and an extension of my art practice, Transitors operates at the intersection of data, photography and language to explore the fragmentation and disintegration of the human psyche and bodily awareness through the effects of digital technology and contemporary social dissociation. Elements of the text simultaneously function as formulas, facts, and data interspersed with expository and narrative writing, all relating mimetically to various registers of this dissociation. The text moves amongst these levels, shifting from the personal to hints of a technological sublime to exemplify the predicament of the individual in relation to systems of …

In Bad Taste - Art Show, Katherine Kolean
Honors Theses
A late night of margaritas contrived an innovative and possibly controversial idea that would incorporate sexual innuendos as part of a senior exhibition. It was the later sober conscious though that revealed the true birth of this idea, which was in fact my own personal sexual journey. In Bad Taste is a depiction of my own sexual awakening – a journey that began with my childhood in a conservative small town in western Michigan, and continues to evolve as a young adult in my final years of college. The title of the exhibition is a tongue-in-cheek response to its sexual …

Confederates In Mexico: Lost Cause Or New South Vanguard?, Jamie Starling
Confederates In Mexico: Lost Cause Or New South Vanguard?, Jamie Starling
History Faculty Publications
The defeat of the Confederacy, the prospect of military occupation and Republican state government, and the financial collapse of many plantations and businesses sent a number of white southerners in pursuit of life in a foreign land during the late 1860s. Between 1865 and the early 1870s approximately five thousand white and black southerners trekked to Mexico (28, 37).1 Todd W. Wahlstrom examines this resettlement by studying colonies in the Texas border state of Coahuila. Much of The Southern Exodus to Mexico chronicles the rise and fall of ambitious colonization plans of such ex-Confederates as Matthew Fontaine …

Once again, there is an emotional eruption and political commotion in South Korea after the Japanese and Korean governments announced their diplomat “deal” on the Comfort Women on December 28, 2015. The official agreement includes a formal apology and a compensation of $8.3 million from the Japanese government. There is one important condition also included in the agreement; that this resolution should be “final and irreversible” this year onward. On the surface, the deal seems good—formal apology and some monetary compensation finalized. But then, why the emotional eruption and vehement opposition, especially from the Korean Comfort Women rights activists? In …

On Sport and Society
The City of Angels, Los Angeles, the second largest city in the United States, the second largest television market, the city of cars and air pollution, the city waiting for the next big earthquake, etc. etc. etc. It is a city that has not had a team in the National Football League for over twenty years. It is remarkable that the so-called New National Pastime had no presence in LA for two decades and still claimed this high position in American sport.
