Multi-Architecture In Saudi Arabia: Representing The History Of Women, Salwa Nugali Jan 2016

Multi-Architecture In Saudi Arabia: Representing The History Of Women, Salwa Nugali

Journal of International Women's Studies

The purpose of this research project is to put into context the role of women in Saudi Arabia through reading of symbols and signs of the physical shape of the first sky scrapers: AlMamlakah (Kingdom) and AlFaisalia. The paper analyses perceptions of modern Saudi Arabian architecture and the significance of our visual perception to gender codification is what this project attempts to analyze. The project uses three interlaced lines of investigation. The first is the relationship of architecture to the culture and the population. The research paper will study the architecture of the two skyscrapers. The second line of investigation …

Trauma, Shame And Performance: Towards A New Topography Of Affects In Black Queer Identities, Maite Escudero-Alías Jan 2016

Trauma, Shame And Performance: Towards A New Topography Of Affects In Black Queer Identities, Maite Escudero-Alías

Journal of International Women's Studies

Haitian American feminist and lesbian activist MilDred Gerestant has become one of the most acclaimed gender performers who best illustrates the malleability of gender, race and sexuality in the reconstruction of black queer identities. Drawing on interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks like trauma studies, queer theory and affect theory, my contribution analyses MilDred’s gender performances as creative attempts to surpass negative affects often attached to minority identities. By exploring the affect of shame as a productive enactment of transformation and hope, rather than as a source of numbness and suffering, this article aims to offer an alternative epistemological paradigm of feminist feeling …

Presenting The Absence: A Contrapuntal Reading Of The Māita In Nepali Tīj Songs, Balram Uprety Jan 2016

Presenting The Absence: A Contrapuntal Reading Of The Māita In Nepali Tīj Songs, Balram Uprety

Journal of International Women's Studies

Much before the arrival of Western feminism in Nepal with its vocabulary of protest and polemics, the discourse of right and fight, Nepali women have had a long complex and ambivalent genealogy of protest in the genre of Tīj songs. However, such discourses have been rendered invisible by the dominant epistemology that derives its ideological sustenance from the Eurocentric and Enlightenment paradigm of knowledge production. The collusion of native patriarchy with the dominant epistemological system can be located in the absence of any systematic engagement with the Tīj songs in the indigenous academia. Through Nepali women’s complex and highly nuanced …

Formal Institutions And Women’S Electoral Representation In Four European Countries: Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Sophia Lu Jan 2016

Formal Institutions And Women’S Electoral Representation In Four European Countries: Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Sophia Lu

Journal of International Women's Studies

This research attempted to produce evidence that formal institutions, such as electoral and internal party quotas, can advance women’s active roles in the public sphere using the cases of four European countries: Belgium, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. The quantitative dataset was provided by the University of Chicago and the Inter-University Consortium of Political and Social Research based on a two-year study (2008-2010) of political parties. Belgium engages in constitutionally mandated electoral quotas. Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, on the other hand, have internal party quotas, which are voluntarily adopted by political parties. In analyzing each country’s chi-square and Pearson’s …

The Role Of African Traditional Religion And 'Juju' In Human Trafficking: Implications For Anti-Trafficking, May Ikeora Jan 2016

The Role Of African Traditional Religion And 'Juju' In Human Trafficking: Implications For Anti-Trafficking, May Ikeora

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines the role that African Traditional Religion (ATR) plays in giving ammunition to human trafficking, a role that serves as an emerging perspective in the understanding and critical engagement with this subject area. Elements within African traditional religion, popularly and often wrongfully termed ‘Juju’, proffer a method of control often used by certain traffickers to keep their victims in perpetual bondage. The data used in this article was derived from extensive fieldwork in Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK) where forty-six (46) anti-trafficking stakeholders including victims were interviewed. The data indicates that this control mechanism was present in …

Technologies Of Truth: Propaganda, Ideology, And The Modern State, Seton Hall University, Department Of History Jan 2016

Technologies Of Truth: Propaganda, Ideology, And The Modern State, Seton Hall University, Department Of History

Symposium in Comparative History

The rise of industrialized mass-societies predicated on notions of popular sovereignty transformed relationships between state power, ideology and the population. Modern propaganda is a product of this transformation. Under the old regime, the population was expected to acquiesce, obey, and fulfill its obligations. Belief was an attribute of the spiritual realm, embodied in religious institutions, whose representatives policed the boundaries of acceptable thought. The doctrine of popular sovereignty undermined this division of labor and engendered a new set of imperatives. Rather than suppressing harmful ideas, it became necessary to propagate a positive set of beliefs that would resonate with the …

Lord Bute And Conservative Scottish Nationalism: British Home Rule Movements In The 1890s And 90s, Ryan Blank, Paul Kerry Jan 2016

Lord Bute And Conservative Scottish Nationalism: British Home Rule Movements In The 1890s And 90s, Ryan Blank, Paul Kerry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the 1880s and 90s, the individual kingdoms and principalities that make up the United Kingdom experienced a revival of nationalistic sentiment. For the English, their national identity was tied to the Empire. The Celtic peoples re-invented nationalistic traditions, costume, and revived national languages. Building on the Romantic Movement, Celtic nationalists promoted strong national identities and legendary histories; however, the nationalism of the 1890s in Wales and Scotland was not anti-Empire even though it was anti-United Kingdom. This project will investigate Welsh and Scottish nationalism, particularly the Home Rule movements, through the lens of the writings and activities of a …

Fred Hoyt, Fred Hoyt, Meg Miner Jan 2016

Fred Hoyt, Fred Hoyt, Meg Miner

All oral histories

Hoyt shared an interest in stamps with Myers and recalls the differences in their interests and acquisition methods. He makes the analogy of Myers' personal characteristic being like a lighthouse; meaning, he would focus intently on something for a brief amount of time and then move on to a new interest. Hoyt observes the effect of changes in teaching load on the institution and on other influences Myers had on students and the institution.

Abstraction And Epistemic Economy, Marco Panza Jan 2016

Abstraction And Epistemic Economy, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

Most of the arguments usually appealed to in order to support the view that some abstraction principles are analytic depend on ascribing to them some sort of existential parsimony or ontological neutrality, whereas the opposite arguments, aiming to deny this view, contend this ascription. As a result, other virtues that these principles might have are often overlooked. Among them, there is an epistemic virtue which I take these principles to have, when regarded in the appropriate settings, and which I suggest to call ‘epistemic economy’. My purpose is to isolate and clarify this notion by appealing to some examples concerning …

Nancy Sultan, Nancy Sultan, Meg Miner

All oral histories

Minor interviewed her for her position and she engaged with him on the train collection she saw in his office. She recalls giving him advice on books to purchase for his Classica collection. Myers loaned her a particular book and he expressed anxiety over its safety. She observes that he was not an astute collector of books in her area of expertise but recalls that he kept "want lists" of titles to look for and he would also look for items she was interested in. Sultan believes that Myers' "curiosity about learning" was infectious and important for students, staff and …

Vadim Mazo, Vadim Mazo, Meg Miner

All oral histories

Mazo recalls his first conversation with Myers and the support he felt from him right away for their mutual interests in music and also discusses encounters he had with Myers in his studio and about "Musical Bridges," a program he feels Myers' interest in his work inspired. Mazo feels Myers was a personal inspiration with his example of curiosity. He credits the widening of his interest in bows and batons to Myers' influence. In turn, he is sharing his interests with his students. He speculates that visitors Myers brought in were to improve the intellectual health of the campus and …

Utopia And The Law And Literature Movement, Michael P. Malloy Jan 2016

Utopia And The Law And Literature Movement, Michael P. Malloy

UTOPIA500

Dr. Malloy kicked off the UTOPIA500 project with a presentation on Jan. 21, 2016. His paper, Utopia and the Law and Literature Movement, marked the quincentennial of the publication of Thomas More's novel Utopia in 1516. Dr. Malloy explored the meaning and implications of the concepts of utopia and dystopia. He argued, with colorful graphic support, that More's novel was a precursor to post-modernist literature, and that in our own time there has been a linguistic transformation of the concept of utopia to contemporary meanings that are often entirely independent of More's novel. Dr. Malloy concluded that More's novel is …

Michel van der Aa’s music theatre work, The Book of Disquiet, was the first staged production in Linz’s Cultural Capital of Europe celebrations in January 2009. Following his opera After Life, which enjoyed a sell-out run at the Holland Festival in 2006, van der Aa again provides cutting-edge integration of music, live action and video, here built from text fragments by Fernando Pessoa.
