26. Task Analysis And Task-Oriented Documentation, David Mcmurray, Tamara Powell Mar 2016

26. Task Analysis And Task-Oriented Documentation, David Mcmurray, Tamara Powell

Sexy Technical Communications

When you write instructions, procedures, and "guide" or user-guide information (generally called documentation), you normally must use a task approach. That means providing steps and explanations for all the major tasks that users may need to perform. Of course, some instructions involve only one task—for example, changing the oil in a car. But we are concerned here with more complex procedures. While this chapter uses computer software as an example, these techniques can apply to any multi-task procedure—for example, operating a microwave oven. Chapter Objectives At the end of this chapter, students will be able to 1. Define documentation 2. …

28. Power-Revision Techniques, David Mcmurray, Jonathan Arnett

Sexy Technical Communications

The linked chapters here cover some of the most important aspects of writing—what's more important than the information you put in a document, how you organize it, how you link it all up together? When you look at all these powerful ways you can review (look for potential problems) and then revise (fix those problems), you might think they're tedious and time-consuming. They do take some time, but don't worry...this stuff becomes second nature rather quickly. If you spend some time analyzing writing in the ways outlined in this chapter, the way you write and the way you review what …

31. Common Grammar, Usage, And Punctuation Problems, David Mcmurray Mar 2016

31. Common Grammar, Usage, And Punctuation Problems, David Mcmurray

Sexy Technical Communications

In this chapter, we will cover only those grammar, punctuation, usage, and spelling problems that give people the biggest headaches. Technical writing professionals try to simplify grammar rules as much as possible without hurting the language or putting themselves in straitjackets. Typically, they work in teams and frequently move in and out of projects—so that the same document may be worked on by different writers and editors during the space of just a few years. That's why any guidelines based on interpretation or personal style or judgment must be avoided.

36. Logic: How To Do It Wrong, Steve Miller, Cherie Miller Mar 2016

36. Logic: How To Do It Wrong, Steve Miller, Cherie Miller

Sexy Technical Communications

To the mind that's yet to be "enhanced" by some strains of modern thought, the above quote probably comes across as amusing, but useless. After all, who would deny something as basic as the law of non-contradiction or the basic laws of logic? If saying "My roommate annoys me" is no different than saying "My roommate doesn't annoy me," then how can we ever say anything meaningful? Moreover, the very act of denying non-contradiction assumes the law to be true. Yet, some argue that our brains, like our opposable thumbs and other body parts, evolved not to perfect our logic, …

Perhaps you are just beginning your collegiate career, or you may be finishing it up. You’ve probably been a part of an athletic or academic team. Perhaps not. Perhaps you have some group experience from being a cheerleader, a boy scout or girl scout or a member of the 4H Club. Either way, I’m sure you’re familiar with the inner workings of a …

43. Examples, Cases, And Models Index

Sexy Technical Communications

The following are links to the examples and models of the kinds reports, letters, and other documents discussed in this book. (Some of the items are excerpts.) True, many of these examples are as much as twenty years old. However, the point here is technical writing, format, organization, style—not up-to-date technology. Even so, why not write a technology update on blood glucose monitoring systems, voice recognition software, laptop computers, wind power systems?

Chasing The Craze: When The Right Variables Are Off-Stage, Tina M. Gebhart Mar 2016

Chasing The Craze: When The Right Variables Are Off-Stage, Tina M. Gebhart

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

A smooth white glaze, (Figure 1) with a buttery surface and smooth breaking on edges, just enough change of whiteness in a crevice pooling, seemingly opaque when thicker, but with a certain glow, a slight grey showing through. It crazes slightly, a fine webbing of cracks. Not enough to be decorative crazing, and not enough crazing to make me abandon the glaze, but enough crazing that I would like it to be gone. I prefer a system-oriented testing approach as a kind of universal order. A simple Unity Molecular Formula grid mapping method typically shows a boundary line of crazed …

Introduction: Global Perspectives On Marriage, Crisis, And Nation. Domestic Tensions, National Anxieties: Global Perspectives On Marriage, Crisis, And Nation, Hanan Kholoussy, Kristin Celello Mar 2016

Introduction: Global Perspectives On Marriage, Crisis, And Nation. Domestic Tensions, National Anxieties: Global Perspectives On Marriage, Crisis, And Nation, Hanan Kholoussy, Kristin Celello

Faculty Book Chapters

The introduction argues that studying marriage in times of crisis provides an important lens onto the relationship between the institution and the nation. It explores the metaphorical links between marriage and the nation and the concrete ways in which the modern state has intervened in the private, marital lives of its citizens. The introduction highlights key points of comparison, notably gender, the tension between modernity and tradition, and the line between public and private. It explains why the modern period is a particularly eventful era to examine due to the rise of the modern nation-state, the peak of anticolonial struggles …

For The Progress Of “Faustus And Helen”: Crane, Whitman, And The Metropolitan Progress Poem, Jeremy Colangelo Mar 2016

For The Progress Of “Faustus And Helen”: Crane, Whitman, And The Metropolitan Progress Poem, Jeremy Colangelo

Department of English Publications

This essay is meant to invigorate a critical discussion of the progress poem—a genre that, while prevalent in American literature, has been virtually ignored by critics and scholars. In lieu of tackling the genre in its entirety, a project too large for just one article, the author focuses the argument through the well-known alignment between Walt Whitman and Hart Crane on the subject of the modern city. It is through the progress poem genre that Crane and Whitman’s peculiar place in metropolitan poetics can best be understood, and it is through their poetry that scholars can begin to approach the …

“The Languages Of Other People”: The Experiences Of Tutors, Administrators, And Students In A South African Multilingual Writing Center, Nicole Bailey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This ethnography, conducted at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, conveys the experiences of tutors, students, and administrators in a multilingual writing lab. As the number of both multilingual and international students in American universities increases, more writing centers in the United States have begun to explore the idea of multilingual tutoring. This study offers implications for establishing American multilingual writing centers based on data that emerged from observations and interviews conducted at Stellenbosch. Several themes emerged from the data that have important implications for American centers. First, there must be a clear understanding of what defines a multilingual writing center. …

Formulating An Effective Means Of Bringing More Adult Males Into Active Participation In The Church, Nicholas Salifu Mar 2016

Formulating An Effective Means Of Bringing More Adult Males Into Active Participation In The Church, Nicholas Salifu

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this Major Applied Project (MAP) is to interview active Lutheran male adults to discover why men perceive Christianity as a “White man’s religion” and further discuss how to effectively teach people about what Christ has done for all mankind. This study, I strongly hope, will provide resources to teach Kusasi men why they should stop their worship of idols or ancestors, fear witchcraft, and also accept monogamy as the God pleasing design of marriage.

Glorification Through Fear In 2 Enoch, Andrei Orlov Mar 2016

Glorification Through Fear In 2 Enoch, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This article explores the imagery of fear found in 2 Enoch and its significance for the glorious transformations that Enoch undergoes during his heavenly journey. This transition from the fallen human form to the state of the celestial citizen, achieved through fear, evokes some protological allusions, namely, the protoplasts' fear in the Garden of Eden after their fall. This article argues that the fear of the visionary thus serves as an important prerequisite for the reversal of the fallen nature of humanity and as the first step towards the restoration of its nature to the prelapsarian state.

Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles

In the mid-19th century, the Vienna School of Anatomy was at the epicenter of the rapidly growing field of anatomy. One of the school’s most distinguished professors, Hungarian-born anatomist Emil Zuckerkandl was instrumental in transforming anatomy from a descriptive science to one of practical and clinical value. A prolific researcher interested in nearly all areas of morphology and most famously, the chromaffin system, Zuckerkandl’s discoveries from more than a century ago still provide a foundation for surgeons to this day.

The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon Mar 2016

The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon

Communication Studies

The Big Short (McKay, 2015), adapted from the non-fiction novel The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis (2010), follows three separate but parallel stories leading up to the United States housing crisis of 2008. On a macro-level, the film brilliantly depicted the creation, and the ultimate burst, of the credit and housing market bubble. However, on a micro-level the audience is given an opportunity to realize and empathize with the internal struggle that many of the main characters faced as they grappled with the fact that their financial gain from shorting the market came with the caveat …

The Goose

A climbing accident took …

Bee Work | Departure, Anne Simpson

The Goose

How do we get closer to the nature of the bee’s, or any non-human's, experience, mystery that it is? This essay is a lyrical meditation on the power (and challenges) of poetry and language to access non-human worlds.
