Meg Grant Final Report 2014-2015, Robert P. Minert

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 2013, I was awarded a mentoring grant under the MEG program for calendar years 2014-2015. The grant was for $20,000, all money stipulated for use as student wages. Advanced students of Germanic family history and German language were hired to extract data on German immigrants from old handwritten church records in the states of Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The plan was to compile the data and have it published as a service to a very large number of Americans attempting to identify the home towns of German ancestors in the United States.

Science, Policy, And Decision Making: A Case Study Of Deliberative Rhetoric And Policymaking For Coastal Adaptation In Southeast Florida, Karen Patricia Langbehn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the process of regional climate adaptation planning and the role of stakeholder deliberation in decision making about adaptation actions. It employed a case study approach based on one of three total study sites of an international, multidisciplinary grant titled, “METROPOLE: An Integrated Framework to Analyze Local Decision Making and Adaptive Capacity to Large-Scale Environmental Change”. The purpose of the case study of this project was to analyze stakeholder deliberation at two workshops at the grant’s Broward County, Florida site regarding two adaptation options: elevation/floodproofing and voluntary buyouts. Questions Of Self-Designation In The 'Ascension Of Isaiah', Meghan Henning, Tobias Nicklas Mar 2016

Questions Of Self-Designation In The 'Ascension Of Isaiah', Meghan Henning, Tobias Nicklas

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The Question of the 'Parting of the Ways' between Jews and Christians has become a matter of debate again: Is it really appropriate to speak about two more or less coherent groups going two different ways from a certain point in history — perhaps after Paul's mission, after the destruction of the Second Temple (70 CE), or after the Bar-Kokhba War (132-135 CE)? Does the image of a tree with one root and two different trunks going into two different directions really fit what the extant sources tell us about the complexities of the past? Or shouldn't we distinguish between …

Animal Welfare At Home And In The Wild, Kyle Johannsen Mar 2016

Animal Welfare At Home And In The Wild, Kyle Johannsen

Animal Sentience

In recent work, economist Yew-Kwang Ng suggests strategies for improving animal welfare within the confines of institutions such as the meat industry. Although I argue that Ng is wrong not to advocate abolition, I do find his position concerning wild animals to be compelling. Anyone who takes the interests of animals seriously should also accept a cautious commitment to intervention in the wild.

Animal Suffering And Human Bias, Stijn Bruers Mar 2016

Animal Suffering And Human Bias, Stijn Bruers

Animal Sentience

Ng proposes concrete ways to decrease animal suffering on the basis of commonsense economic logic and research in welfare biology. But to reduce animal suffering effectively in livestock farming, animal experimentation or the natural environment we have to become more aware of our pervasive and spontaneous but unreliable intuitive moral judgments. These can generate biases that prevent us from decreasing animal suffering effectively.

Enekas, Shabnam Yousefian Mar 2016

Enekas, Shabnam Yousefian

CGU MFA Theses

My works are all a reflection of my own life, beliefs, experiences and goal. For me art is an oasis of opportunities. It allows me to utilize my innate abilities and imaginations without any obstructions.

I am drawn to painting because of its capacity to reflect the world I live in. My goal is to demonstrate the fact that what is done in life has a reflection on us as well as our surrounding environment. My paintings are abstractions of the real places. Reflection implies clarity; however it is unclear at the same time. To me reflection is clearer than …

Music Intervention In The Acute And Critical Care Settings: Commentary On “The Effect Of Music During Bronchoscopy: A Meta-Analysis”, Linda L. Chlan, Annie Heiderscheit Mar 2016

Music Intervention In The Acute And Critical Care Settings: Commentary On “The Effect Of Music During Bronchoscopy: A Meta-Analysis”, Linda L. Chlan, Annie Heiderscheit

Faculty Authored Articles

The article by Tam and colleagues published in this edition of Heart & Lung, succinctly reports on the meta-analysis of research findings testing music as an adjunctive intervention during bronchoscopy. The article provides a coherent summary of the pooled evidence of music’s beneficial effect on physiological indicators of relaxation and anxiety as evidenced by reductions in heart rate and blood pressure. We offer here a commentary on the article and music intervention, including key considerations for the implementation of music in practice settings.

Venetian Cartography And The Globes Of The Tommaso Rangone Monument In San Giuliano, Venice, Jill E. Carrington Mar 2016

Venetian Cartography And The Globes Of The Tommaso Rangone Monument In San Giuliano, Venice, Jill E. Carrington

Faculty Publications

Highly-specific reliefs of a terrestrial and a celestial globe flank the statue of physician and university professor Tommaso Rangone in his funerary monument on the facade of San Giuliano in Venice (1554-1557, installed c. 1558). The essay is the first to examine the strikingly specific imagery of the globes; it compares them to actual maps and globes, argues that the features of the globes were inspired by contemporary maps and globes owned by Rangone himself, relates the globes to the emergence of globe paris and situates them within the thriving production of maps, atlases and treatises at the time they …

John Cobb’S Liberating Work From The Perspective Of Black Theology, Theodore Walker Mar 2016

John Cobb’S Liberating Work From The Perspective Of Black Theology, Theodore Walker

Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events

John Cobb offers “a critical view of inherited theology” (1980), and an affirmative answer to the question “Has Europe become theologically barren?” (2002a). He prescribes listening to alternative theological voices, including black, feminist, Latin American and Native American voices demanding liberation from oppression and poverty. He is critically attentive to continuing connections to colonialism and slavery. He offers a Martin-Luther-King-Jr.-like witness concerning the abolition of poverty globally. Hence, John Cobb is doing liberation theology and liberation ethics.
