Defined Places, Contested Memories: An Analysis Of Historical Memory In La Ascensión, Chihuahua, Mexico, Joel Gonzalez Parra Apr 2025

Defined Places, Contested Memories: An Analysis Of Historical Memory In La Ascensión, Chihuahua, Mexico, Joel Gonzalez Parra

The Agora

La Ascensión, a town in Chihuahua, Mexico, was founded between 1871 and 1872 and represents a unique case of Mexican repatriation after the Mexican-American War. Its settlers underwent a double relocation, first from Doña Ana, New Mexico, in 1850 and again after the Mesilla Riot of 1871. While the Mexican government saw the town’s formation as a strategic emigration to modernize and defend the frontier, historical memory has largely overshadowed this foundational event, favoring the town’s role in the Mexican Revolution of 1910. This paper argues that broader historical narratives and political violence have obscured the town’s original settlers in …

Mythology Of Autism: Pop Culture, Rhetoric, And Vaccines, Makenzi Strate Apr 2025

Mythology Of Autism: Pop Culture, Rhetoric, And Vaccines, Makenzi Strate

Theses and Dissertations

Myths are stories told to provide an explanation for the unknown, reflect cultural beliefs of populations that hold them, and lack scientific evidence to support these stories. Some myths, such as the myth that vaccines cause autism, are harmful toward the groups that they target. Popularized in 1998 with the publication of the Wakefield study, the myth that vaccines cause autism continues to spread and thrive today. To understand the widespread nature and detriments of belief in harmful myths such as this, I implement mythology rhetoric to examine how celebrity Jenny McCarthy utilizes elements of myth to persuade others to …

Teaching Information Synthesis In First-Year Writing: A Replication And Extension Study, Rachel M. Terry Apr 2025

Teaching Information Synthesis In First-Year Writing: A Replication And Extension Study, Rachel M. Terry

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the challenges and strategies associated with teaching information synthesis to first-year college students. Synthesis, a higher-order cognitive skill described as "knowledge-transforming," is critical for academic success and informed engagement in an information-saturated society. However, many students enter college with underdeveloped foundational reading and writing skills, compounded by declining literacy rates and the prevalence of fragmented digital content consumption. This study builds on prior research in composition, education, and information literacy to address three key questions: (1) How do students understand synthesis? (2) What strategies do students employ when attempting to synthesize information? (3) What instructional implications arise …

Spanish Education: Teaching Philosophy Learned From Best Practice And Student And Teacher Engagement., Olivia Anderson Apr 2025

Spanish Education: Teaching Philosophy Learned From Best Practice And Student And Teacher Engagement., Olivia Anderson

Honors Theses

This honors thesis investigates best practices for teaching Spanish in K–12 settings by conducting qualitative interviews with Spanish teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The study focuses on identifying effective strategies and classroom activities that promote student engagement and language proficiency while examining how teachers continue to develop professionally. Conscious of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages’ (ACTFL) Five C’s—Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities—the research highlights communication as the central pillar of language learning. Through detailed classroom examples, such as “Mapa del Martes,” student-created cooking videos, and Kagan Strategies, the thesis illustrates how …

The Imperfect Soul, Jasmine Vaughn Apr 2025

The Imperfect Soul, Jasmine Vaughn

The Agora

“The Imperfect Soul” is a personal painting of mine, it was born from an old argument I had with my family, where from their perspective appearance is everything, but for me, it is not. This acrylic painting reflects how imperfect we are as humans, which is okay. This can be seen in the same painting, how it looks “incomplete” in so many aspects, from the pencil lines from the original sketch or how it appears to be symmetrical, but it is not. I have never taken any painting class, every knowledge I have about acrylic painting is from the internet …

Hieronymus Bosch’S Purgatory In In Bruges, Yalet Yanar Apr 2025

Hieronymus Bosch’S Purgatory In In Bruges, Yalet Yanar

The Agora

In this paper I analyze the critically acclaimed film _In Bruges_, directed by Martin McDonagh, arguing that the film transforms the town of Bruges into a narrative embodiment of the Purgatory depicted in Hieronymus Bosch’s medieval paintings. The Boschian transformation is achieved through the use of medieval symbolism, themes of sin, repentance, and the afterlife, as well as visual references to Bosch’s characters, scenes, and his Last Judgement triptych in Bruges.

Temperance As The Key To Moral Balance — An Analysis Of Aristotle And Aquinas, Alexandra Dimauro Apr 2025

Temperance As The Key To Moral Balance — An Analysis Of Aristotle And Aquinas, Alexandra Dimauro

The Agora

Temperance is often misunderstood as simple self-denial or restraint, but it is a profound virtue that aligns desires with reason to foster moral balance and harmony. This paper explores temperance through the frameworks of Aristotle and Aquinas, arguing that it is essential for achieving a virtuous life. Aristotle’s concept of temperance as a mean between excess and deficiency emphasizes balance, while Aquinas builds on this by framing temperance as a causal virtue that actively integrates desires into rational and ethical goals. Through this integration, temperance transcends mere restraint, becoming a foundation for moral growth and self-realization. The historical roots of …

Music Therapy's Application On Developmental Milestones Throughout Childhood And Adolescence, Paige Whisler, Sarah Daughtrey Apr 2025

Music Therapy's Application On Developmental Milestones Throughout Childhood And Adolescence, Paige Whisler, Sarah Daughtrey

The Agora

New Mexico State University’s Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Music Therapy is a relatively new degree, and awareness of music therapy's definition, applications, and profound impact remains limited for many. Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based practice that can foster change and improvement for diverse needs and goals across all age groups. In particular, children and adolescents can benefit significantly from music therapy, as it supports developmental milestones crucial to their growth. Treatment plans build upon a clear understanding of milestones for effective interventions and tailor techniques and applications to age-appropriate expectations. Completed in partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of …

Language Choice And Russian Course Enrollment Among University Students, Emma Calderwood Apr 2025

Language Choice And Russian Course Enrollment Among University Students, Emma Calderwood

Theses and Dissertations

University Russian enrollments have been steadily declining in the United States since 2009 (MLA, 2023). No research has been done to examine student motivation for studying Russian since long before the 2022 increase in conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This study surveys two groups of students at the university level: students enrolled in BYU 101-level language classes, and students enrolled in Russian classes at six universities in the United States. The findings report that the most common reasons students choose to take university Russian classes is because they have a general interest in the language, they want to travel to …
