"The Ideals Of Pine Mountain": Gender, Progressive Thought, And The Built Environment At Pine Mountain Settlement School, Mary C. Fesak Apr 2016

"The Ideals Of Pine Mountain": Gender, Progressive Thought, And The Built Environment At Pine Mountain Settlement School, Mary C. Fesak

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper evaluates the influences of Progressive thought, gender built environment of Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County, Kentucky. Progressive educators Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long founded the Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1913 as part of the growth of the rural settlement school movement in Appalachia. Pettit and de Long commissioned early female architect Mary Rockwell Hook to work with them to create a comprehensive plan for the construction of the campus. While Hook was not an educator, her educated, middle-class background led her to share Pettit's and de Long's mission to preserve what they saw as …

Mussar (A Short Historical Perspective) And Spinoza, Martin Zwick Apr 2016

Mussar (A Short Historical Perspective) And Spinoza, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This talk will be in two parts. First, I’ll give a bird’s eye view of Mussar in Jewish thought to provide some context for the Shlain film[i] and for Bob Liebman’s analysis of the contemporary revival of Mussar; but this will only approximate an adequate account, since everything is more complex than I have time to describe. Second, I’ll introduce the idea that Spinoza is relevant to the ethical and spiritual project of Mussar. Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian Apr 2016

Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Previous research has found racial background is a significant factor for the perception of police. However, there is little research done on the impact of the race of the police officer on the perceptions of police. This study examined the impact of racial influences on the perception of police. To study this, we used vignettes of a violent police citizen encounter, in which the officer's use of force was justified, unjustified, or ambiguous. Participants were randomly assigned to instructions, in which the police officer was identified as White or African American. Through self-report surveys, participants rated their perception of the …

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le Apr 2016

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Comprehension of pictures and text in health-related materials like medication instructions and pamphlets plays a critical role in health outcomes. Understanding the materials can help promote information integration, information recall, medication adherence, and improved health communication. Existing research that address the effects of repetition in pictures and text have been in other contexts such as object assembly. It shows that repetitious multimedia results in better free recall and accuracy and response times in order verification (BrunyÌ© et al., 2008). Research also suggests that there is better recall for pictures integrated with the text than separated (Johnson & Mayer, 2012). However, …

Psychopathy, Empathy, And Prosocial Helping: Can You Increase Altruistic Helping For Individuals High In Psychopathy?, Courtney Beussink Apr 2016

Psychopathy, Empathy, And Prosocial Helping: Can You Increase Altruistic Helping For Individuals High In Psychopathy?, Courtney Beussink

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Psychopathy is a disorder encompassing a distinct set of interpersonal, affective, and behavioral traits including lack of empathy and remorse, manipulativeness, callousness, selfishness, antisocial lifestyle, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and social deviance. It is estimated that approximately 15-25% of incarcerated individuals and 0.6-1% of individuals within the community are high in psychopathy (Coid, Yang, Ullrich, Roberts, & Hare, 2009; Hare, 2003). Since psychopathic traits are linked with deviant behavioral outcomes and the prevalence rates are relatively high within forensic and community populations, interventions designed to target the core personality deficits and reduce psychopathic tendencies are needed. The current study seeks to induce …

Influence Of Game Stimuli On Participant Snacking, Emily Welsh

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

In 2003 the Pew Research Center conducted a study which found the 70% of college students play some form of electronic game (video, computer, internet) (Jones, 2003), and it is our belief that this data has only increased with the iPhone take-over that took place in 2007. In 2015 the CDC reported that nearly 35% of adults in the United States are considered overweight or obese, and has been found to be a key influence in the onset Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and numerous other health concerns, to include mental illness in the form of depression, high anxiety, and …

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

This paper explores the fate of Poland during and immediately after the Second World War. The paper examines the question of Western betrayal of Poland. How the Poles came to understand their fate and position in the world during and after World War Two is examined. The Warsaw Uprising is taken as a case study for the Polish experience of World War Two. The degree of Allied support and intervention is discussed, along with the failures of the Polish Government-in-Exile …
