David Roediger Interview, Jennifer Thomson, Mohammed Elnaiem

Bucknell: Occupied

Jennifer Thomson, assistant professor of History at Bucknell University and Mohammed Elnaiem, student at Bucknell University, interview David Roediger, professor of American Studies at the University of Kansas. Thomson and Roediger discuss self-emancipation of enslaved peoples as a catalyst for liberation movements in the United States. Elnaiem draws parallels between the 19th century activism inspired by emancipation and the social movements inspired by the Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter movements. Thomson asks Roediger about his next book and the discussion centers around the American middle class, class consciousness, and the rhetoric used by politicians to appeal to the middle …

Flawed Knighthood And Kingship In The Medieval Literary Tradition, Leta Bressin Apr 2016

Flawed Knighthood And Kingship In The Medieval Literary Tradition, Leta Bressin

Theses & Honors Papers

Throughout the corpus of medieval literature, especially fourteenth-century romance, chivalry plays a significant role as a social construct for gauging both successful and disastrous kingship. For kings like Henry II, Richard I, Edward III, Richard II, Henry IV, and Edward IV, the literature of the time offers insights on the difficulties of chivalry and kingship in representation and practice. Production of vernacular chivalric romance literature evolved considerably in the thirteenth and fourteenth-centuries in England. Geoffrey Chaucer’s fourteenth-century Knight’s Tale, and the anonymous Stanzaic Morte Arthur and Alliterative Morte Arthure offer a stinging critique of chivalry potentially aimed at Richard II, …

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

This study analyzes improvisatory techniques of Theodore “Fats” Navarro (1923-1950). Live improvised solos of the trumpeter from 1949-1950 were examined to better understand the improvisational style through the analysis of transcribed solos. Chapter one gives a brief overview of Navarro’s brief professional career and why he was chosen as the subject of this study. Chapter two sets out the methodology for this study and reviews related literature to the study of Fats Navarro. Chapter three provides a brief background of each performance from which the transcriptions were selected. Chapter four identifies those aspects of his improvisation that occur often harmonically, …

Opium Eaters: Buddhism As Revolutionary Politics, James Mark Shields Apr 2016

Opium Eaters: Buddhism As Revolutionary Politics, James Mark Shields

Faculty Contributions to Books

There is no one, single answer to the question: What is or are ‘Buddhist politics’? Rather than seek general historical trends or broad tendencies, in this chapter I explore the meaning and implications of the modern, Western conception of ‘politics’ as understood in relation to key features of Buddhist doctrine. In particular, I pose the question of whether we might fruitfully conceive at least certain interpretations of Buddhism—or perhaps, of Dharma—as politics, rather than ‘religion’ or ‘philosophy.’ I argue that twentieth century progressive Buddhists Seno’o Girō (1889–1961) and B. R. Ambedkar (1891–1956) were not so much in conflict with …

The Reclamation Of The Missouri Bootheel: The Formation Of The Little River Drainage District, Jillian J. Hartley Apr 2016

The Reclamation Of The Missouri Bootheel: The Formation Of The Little River Drainage District, Jillian J. Hartley

Student Theses and Dissertations

The reclamation of the Missouri Bootheel began in the early twentieth century with the formation of the Little River Drainage District, a publicly incorporated district that stretches across six counties in the Missouri Bootheel. The formation of the district occurred after timber companies deforested much of the land in the late nineteenth century. The district employed skilled engineers and contractors who used large dragline excavators to dig more than six hundred miles of ditches and canals. The formation of the district and the infrastructure it created altered and controlled the natural environment thereby facilitating the development of sustainable agriculture in …

My Mind Made No Sound: The Downward Spiral Of Scholars In One Act, Jacob Lorrin Buechler Apr 2016

My Mind Made No Sound: The Downward Spiral Of Scholars In One Act, Jacob Lorrin Buechler

Student Theses and Dissertations

This is a one-act play on the world of academia. Set in a city during an academic conference, inside a bar, the characters are representations of my real life involvement in higher education. Told in a creative nonfiction style, using characters and stories that I have personally faced, this play brings to life the conflicts and tragedies inherent in our higher education process. Through the seven different characters, each with their own arrogance and prejudices, the play reaches into the ethos of what it means to be a scholar, what events lead to our toleration of what education means, and …

“In The End We All Come To Be Cured Of Our Sentiments”: Violence And Cultural Anxiety In Cormac Mccarthy’S Border Trilogy, Stephen Michael Turner Apr 2016

“In The End We All Come To Be Cured Of Our Sentiments”: Violence And Cultural Anxiety In Cormac Mccarthy’S Border Trilogy, Stephen Michael Turner

Student Theses and Dissertations

Each of Cormac McCarthy’s works contain unflinching violence and gore. A majority of McCarthy critics agree that the presence of violence within his work remain disconnected from each novel's plot and theme. This examination of Cormac McCarthy's "Border Trilogy" illustrates the political and historical relationship between the United States and Mexico, as represented through various characters within the trilogy, and also explores the role that cultural anxiety plays as a primary motivator for violence. The loss of a certain way of life is a major concept found within McCarthy’s work, and the “Border Trilogy” serves as a meditation on this …

Passing For Power: A Literary Look At Passing As A Means Of Determining Identity And Claiming Agency, Jeanna Leah Mason Apr 2016

Passing For Power: A Literary Look At Passing As A Means Of Determining Identity And Claiming Agency, Jeanna Leah Mason

Student Theses and Dissertations

Historically, passing has been associated with race, such as when a black man or woman with light-colored skin would assume a white identity for a specific purpose. In early incarnations, passing was generally temporary and was used as an escape from the degradations of slavery or the economic and legal restrictions under Jim Crow laws. In Pudd’nhead Wilson, Twain uses Tom Driscoll’s passing to illustrate identity formation and the illogic of using legal definitions to determine race. In Absalom, Absalom!, Faulkner uses the Bon family’s experiences to explore society’s influence on each one’s experience with passing. Finally, in Passing, Larsen …

Folklore, Stories, And Truth, Rebekah Hartshorn Apr 2016

Folklore, Stories, And Truth, Rebekah Hartshorn

Student Works

An exploration of Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story through the lens of the academic discipline of Folklore. Where is the line between reality and imagination? Stories are true because they influence lives and people interact with them. Many stories believed to be true have origins that are lost to time and their truth is questionable at best. However, when an audience interacts with a story, the story begins to exist within the timeline of the audience members’ lives. The story becomes part of the truths that they live.

Morbid Science & Monstrous Literature: Degeneration & Eugenics In R.L. Stevenson & Oscar Wilde, Justin H. Cook Apr 2016

Morbid Science & Monstrous Literature: Degeneration & Eugenics In R.L. Stevenson & Oscar Wilde, Justin H. Cook

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Victorian fin de siècle was a tempest of scientific discovery. These findings were largely set in motion by Charles Darwin’s research, but they were propelled by a vast number of scientists and writers who were constantly pushing the boundaries of what it meant to be human. My research explores the tension between these scientific and literary discourses. I argue that the locus for monstrosity of both Mr. Hyde and Dorian Gray is in that very tension. Many scholars have attempted to locate this monstrosity in other places, and I do not undercut their findings. However, I do suggest that …

"In The Land Of Tomorrow": Representations Of The New Woman In The Pre-Suffrage Era, Natalie B. O'Neal Apr 2016

"In The Land Of Tomorrow": Representations Of The New Woman In The Pre-Suffrage Era, Natalie B. O'Neal

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This digital anthology explores feminism in selected short fiction by women writers from the 1911 run of the popular women’s magazines Woman’s Home Companion, Ladies’ Home Journal, and The Farmer’s Wife. This fiction furthered the women’s rights movement by allowing women to imagine a world similar to their own with a heroine who voiced their desires and enacted change. Rather than the more experimental, inaccessible literature of avant garde high modernist writers consumed by the upper class, popular fiction reached a wider, middle class audience and was more effective at producing a progressive zeitgeist following the stilted Victorian …

Historical Corsets Retrospective 1558-1890, Jacquelyn Marks Apr 2016

Historical Corsets Retrospective 1558-1890, Jacquelyn Marks

Honors Theses

Women and men have worn corsets for centuries, primarily in Europe. Throughout the years, the style of the undergarment changed. A corset was an undergarment that served the purpose of adding warmth or coverage, gave support to the wearer’s body, gave structure to outer garments and created visual appeal. As styles transitioned throughout history, undergarments had to accommodate to the changes. Modesty prioritized the garment’s purpose but the late 1800’s encouraged more attractive corsets. After researching an archive of historical patterns, I selected several corsets that I would create and conduct research for a gallery display in Korhman Hall’s Design …

God And Man, Nicole A. Ratliff

Student Works

An analysis of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath in regards to Samuel Johnson's "The Vanity of Human Wishes." The paper's argument is structured as the book progresses. In regards to Samuel Johnson's piece, both pieces of literature progress in the same way- starting off with very vain characters and ending with a change towards a more religious side. This paper tries to expand upon the religious aspects of The Grapes of Wrath, and come up with a theory that defies the socialist aspect.
