Alissa & Michael Donoghue opened the door of the family home, built in the 1800’s, as the Aran Café & Tea Rooms in 2005. Though Michael’s family goes back for unknown generations on Inisheer, Alissa is an American ‘blow-in’ who was visiting the island with her grandparents when she and Michael first met. Michael served her tea and porter cake in these same rooms, and the rest, as they say, is history. Michael grows a large garden made with seaweed and sand in the island tradition, and raises free-ranging hens and ducks for their fresh eggs. Michael’s mother has taught …

Around The Table : A Project About Food In Dublin, Dublin’S Culture Connects
Academic Publications
A project about food, with Dublin City Council and The National Library, prompted by a bid for European City of Culture 2020, which takes in the area of the city from the mouth of the River Liffey up to Stoneybatter on the Northside, and involves retired Dockworkers, a homework club on Greek Street, a group of women who grew up near the markets, and several other communities we don’t know exist yet but will want to know more about — to be concluded inside three months?” Oh yes. In our role of boisterous intruders in these selfcontained, well-hidden worlds, we …
Womb Heat Versus Sperm Heat: Hippocrates Against Galen And Ibn Sīnā In Ibn Al- Nafīs’S Commentaries, Nahyan Fancy
Womb Heat Versus Sperm Heat: Hippocrates Against Galen And Ibn Sīnā In Ibn Al- Nafīs’S Commentaries, Nahyan Fancy
History Faculty publications
Ibn al-Nafīs wrote lemmatic commentaries on Hippocrates’ Aphorisms and Ibn Sīnā’s entire Canon of Medicine. While he regularly challenges, critiques and refutes Ibn Sīnā’s positions in his Commentary on the Canon, Ibn al-Nafīs generally upholds the validity of each aphorism. This already suggests that he considered Hippocrates the supreme authority in medicine over Ibn Sīnā (and even Galen). Through an analysis of his commentary on Aphorisms V.42 and V.48 (on the causes and consequences of bearing male children), and how he deploys them in his commentary on the analogous chapters from the Canon, we shall see how Ibn al-Nafīs establishes …
Accumulating Risk: Environmental Justice And The History Of Capitalism In Detroit, 1880-2015, Josiah John Rector
Accumulating Risk: Environmental Justice And The History Of Capitalism In Detroit, 1880-2015, Josiah John Rector
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation is an environmental history of Detroit, Michigan from the 19th century to the present. Recent scholarship on the history of capitalism has largely ignored the problem of environmental inequality, and the negative externalities of economic growth. In contrast, studies of the environmental justice movement have richly documented race, class, and gender inequalities in environmental risk exposure. However, they have neglected the relationship between the development of the environmental justice movement and the restructuring of American capitalism since the 1970s, including deindustrialization and the shift to neoliberalism. Bringing these fields together, this dissertation connects Detroit’s long-term economic transformation to …

How Religion Influences Coping With Stress And Challenges In Families, Michael A. Goodman, Antonious Skipper, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Emily Layton
Faculty Publications
One key finding of our American Families of Faith research project is that (instead of being defeated by challenges) strong families find ways to effectively cope with and grow closer through stressful situations. Interestingly, six decades ago, Jeff Hill’s uncle, family sociologist Reuben Hill, began to conceptually and empirically examine why some families succumb to crisis as a result of a stressful situation, while other families remain resilient. While stress can lead to crisis, crisis can also lead to familial resilience and the ability of the family to better cope with future stressors. Different families obviously have different strengths and …

Protests, Pageants, And Publications: Narratives Of Labor Agitators, 1913-1914, Jayme Edmund
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In the vast historiography on the American labor movement workers have been treated as noble artisans, brave unionists, martyrs to the cause of unionization, and losers in the triumph of the “free market”. They have not been treated as historians producing their own stories. In crafting their own narratives labor activists acted as historians, reaching beyond recent events to contextualize their struggles and create a narrative that would mobilize both labor and non-labor audiences behind their goals. They offered a vision of the past as leading to present or recent problems and framed unions or labor solidarity as the solution …
