[Review Of The Book Brown Girl Dreaming, By J. Woodson], Kaavonia Hinton

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Jacqueline Woodson is an award-winning children's literature author, who, early in her career, was touted by renowned children's literature sholar Rudine Sims Bishop as one of the most promising children's literature authors of her generation. Lauded for her ability to write honestly about social issues, marginalized youth, and popular culture, Woodson, to date, has written over twenty-five texts for youth, spanning several genres- from novels and picture books to books-in-verse and short stories. She is, as predicted, a major voice in children's literature. In Brown Girl Dreaming, a book written for youth, Woodson explores how she learned to develop …

Religious/Spiritual Coping And Attributional Styles Among Adolescents With Chronic Health Conditions And Their Parents: Reciprocal Relationships Over Time, Christina Marie D'Angelo Jan 2017

Religious/Spiritual Coping And Attributional Styles Among Adolescents With Chronic Health Conditions And Their Parents: Reciprocal Relationships Over Time, Christina Marie D'Angelo

All ETDs from UAB

Adolescents with chronic health conditions and their parents typically utilize various coping strategies, including religious/spiritual coping, to manage the stress associated with a chronic health condition, yet few studies have examined how parent and adolescent religious/spiritual coping relate to other cognitive factors, such as attributional styles. Additionally, it is important to investigate how parent and adolescent coping and attributional styles influence each other. Better understanding of the temporal dynamics between adolescents’ and parents’ attributions and religious/spiritual coping has important implications for whom and what to target in interventions to help families cope with the challenges of a chronic health condition. …

Antiseptic, Elizabeth Ann Tompkins Jan 2017

Antiseptic, Elizabeth Ann Tompkins

All ETDs from UAB

“Antiseptic” is a collection of five stories that explore the ways family dynamics shift under hardships. The collection navigates how shifts affect both children and adults. Why do some family members wither, some simply survive, while others flourish under the pressure of a difficult experience? But these stories are not looking for specific answers. Instead, the questions are starting places for developing the internal struggles of the main characters. Where those struggles take the main characters is something that the collection explores. The collection is connected not only by the thread of family, but also by the range of emotions …

Delivery Of Deoxyribonucleic Acids As Drugs: A Structural Study, Encapsulation, And Controlled Release Of G-Quadruplex Forming Deoxyoligonucleotides Of The Human Telomeric Sequence, Brenna Alyssa Tucker Jan 2017

Delivery Of Deoxyribonucleic Acids As Drugs: A Structural Study, Encapsulation, And Controlled Release Of G-Quadruplex Forming Deoxyoligonucleotides Of The Human Telomeric Sequence, Brenna Alyssa Tucker

All ETDs from UAB

Nucleic acids are known to play numerous important roles in the cell. Recently, interest in the delivery of DNA to treat disease, also known as gene therapy, has increased with new non-viral encapsulation strategies becoming available. Unfortunately, challenges with sufficient delivery of the DNA still plague these systems causing the need for improved DNA delivery vehicles. To overcome DNA delivery barriers, two-component poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)/ poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVPON) microcapsules were developed using Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technology. G-quadruplex forming deoxyoligonucleotides of the human telomeric sequence were used to model the delivery of the thrombin binding aptamer (TBA), a DNA therapeutic that folds into …

Blackbird In Flight, Holly Watson

All ETDs from UAB

Set in the fictional town of Raynham, Alabama in the Tennessee Valley region, Blackbird in Flight opens with the voice of Fenton Knox as he reminisces about the day four-year-old Molly Sutherland drowned at the drip hole where he and his family were picnicking with the Sutherlands. Fenton, who was fifteen at the time, sees a snake in the water and inaccurately assumes it is a cottonmouth. In an attempt to catch and kill the snake, Fenton is bitten. As the remaining adults attend to Fenton’s wound and successfully eliminate the snake, Molly wanders out into the water unsupervised and …

Kinetic Mechanisms Of Atp-Dependent Disaggregating Motors Escherichia Coli Clpb And Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Hsp104, Clarissa Lynn Weaver Jan 2017

Kinetic Mechanisms Of Atp-Dependent Disaggregating Motors Escherichia Coli Clpb And Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Hsp104, Clarissa Lynn Weaver

All ETDs from UAB

E. coli ClpB and S. cerevisiae Hsp104 help cells survive and adapt to environmental stress. Extreme stress denatures proteins, causing toxic aggregates to form. ClpB/Hsp104 resolve aggregates, returning damaged proteins to their proper fold and function or releas-ing them for degradation. This function, broadly defined as protein remodeling, is com-mon to AAA+ proteins. This superfamily also shares common structural elements includ-ing Walker A and Walker B motifs in the nucleotide binding domain(s). ClpB/Hsp104 have two NBDs, similar to ClpA. ClpB/Hsp104 also have a middle (M) domain, unique to the disaggregases. Because disaggregases do not covalently modify their substrates, monitoring the …

You’Re Going To Need This For College, Andrew Hollinger Jan 2017

You’Re Going To Need This For College, Andrew Hollinger

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

When I first heard a teacher say, “You’re going to need this for college,” I was a high school student. I heard the phrase again when I began teaching 10th grade English, and I wondered, as a first-year teacher, whether that was the teacher version of “Because I said so,” or if, more tragically, it was what teachers said in response to the often asked, “Why do I have to learn this?” when they didn’t really know the answer. The teachers I worked with, however, were very smart and some of the most student-centered educators I’ve ever known, so it’s …

Cftr Snp Accumulation In The Context Of Evolutionary Fitness, Zackery Ezekiel Plyler Jan 2017

Cftr Snp Accumulation In The Context Of Evolutionary Fitness, Zackery Ezekiel Plyler

All ETDs from UAB

Progress in whole genome sequencing in multiple species has provided new knowledge regarding the origins and evolution of large, disease associated genes such as the cystic fibrosis conductance regulator (CFTR). In this context, mechanisms that underlie human mutation, sequence fault tolerance, and maintenance of DNA integrity from the perspective of protein plasticity represent areas of considerable interest. The common occurrence of mutations within CFTR, including the F508del allele, provide a powerful system for studies of this sort. In this project, we consider the stability and persistence of CFTR in terms of longevity, accumulation of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and effects …

Cognitive Correlates Of Driving Behavior In Older Adults With Hiv, Caitlin Northcutt Pope Jan 2017

Cognitive Correlates Of Driving Behavior In Older Adults With Hiv, Caitlin Northcutt Pope

All ETDs from UAB

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) currently affects over 1 million individuals in the United States. It is estimated that by the year 2020, up to 70% of individuals with HIV in the United States will be ages 50 and older, as these individuals live longer due to more advanced medicine and later diagnosis. Aging research suggests individuals with HIV may be at risk for accelerated or accentuated aging making age-related deficits, particularly with cognition and everyday functioning, of public concern. The current study investigated the complex associations between age, HIV disease state, cognition, health, and driving in 139 older adults (Mage …

An Examination Of The Neuropsychological Construct Executive Function And How It May Be Impacted By Cognitive And Exercise Interventions, Erica Schmidt

All ETDs from UAB

Background: There is a growing body of literature supporting the beneficial effects of cognitive training and exercise training on executive function (EF) in older adults. More recently, evidence is amassing that interventions which combine cognitive and physical activity, for example, exergames, may confer even greater cognitive benefits. Comparison of EF interventions for older adults requires more investigation and would benefit from improved operationalization of the EF construct and better understanding of factors which predict baseline EF in older adults. Methods and Results: Fifty-seven sedentary, non-gamer, community dwelling older adults were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups (computerized cognitive …

Mathematical Modeling Of Brain Tumors Advances Patient Care, Oncogenesis, And The Use Of In Silico Clinical Trials, Elizabeth Yates Scribner

All ETDs from UAB

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a uniformly fatal form of brain cancer that can exhibit unpredictable responses to dierent rate-reducing therapies. Here, we construct a mathematical model of brain tumor growth and utilize in silico clinical trials to investigate the unusual behavior of GBM. We also use the model to study the progression of grade 2 and grade 3 tumors to higher grades like GBM. Simulations in Chapter 1 lead to the identication of a previously unknown pattern of progression under anti-angiogenic (AA) therapy, which we call \Expanding FLAIR + Necrosis." Model analysis predicts that clinical features of this growth would …

Neural Correlates Of Social Perception In Children With Autism: Local Versus Global Preferences, Abbey Jane Herringshaw Jan 2017

Neural Correlates Of Social Perception In Children With Autism: Local Versus Global Preferences, Abbey Jane Herringshaw

All ETDs from UAB

The Weak Central Coherence (WCC) account of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD; Frith, 1989) posits that people with ASD utilize a detail-oriented information processing bias. Consequently, in social cognition tasks where coherence is required, people with autism falter, whereas in visual search tasks this is advantageous. Atypical brain response patterns may underlie this cognitive profile. The present study examined the neural correlates of WCC in ASD during visual and social processing. ASD (N=15) and Typically Developing (TD) (N=16) children/adolescents completed an information processing task in a Siemens 3.0 Tesla fMRI scanner. The task consisted of human characters, composed of geometrical shapes, …

Linking Residual Language Capacity, Structural Damage, And Surviving Network Function In Chronic Post-Stroke Aphasia With Multi-Modal Mri, Joseph Griffis Jan 2017

Linking Residual Language Capacity, Structural Damage, And Surviving Network Function In Chronic Post-Stroke Aphasia With Multi-Modal Mri, Joseph Griffis

All ETDs from UAB

The advent of advanced neuroimaging techniques has enabled unprecedented insights into the neurobiology of language recovery after stroke. Current theories of language recovery after stroke, however, are limited by their dependence on the results of small imaging studies that have typically focused on only single imaging modalities. This likely contributes to discrepancies in the literature regarding critical topics such as how each hemisphere contributes to residual language abilities, whether different compensatory mechanisms are engaged by patients with different amounts of left hemispheric damage, whether poor long-term outcomes are primarily due to a loss of local cortical function or result from …

The Effects Of Pain Catastrophizing And Hiv-Related Stigma On Pain Sensitivity In Persons Living With Hiv (Plwh), Michael Alexander Owens Jan 2017

The Effects Of Pain Catastrophizing And Hiv-Related Stigma On Pain Sensitivity In Persons Living With Hiv (Plwh), Michael Alexander Owens

All ETDs from UAB

Due to medical advancements in antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV has transitioned from a terminal illness to a chronic condition requiring long-term management. Despite substantial improvements in life expectancy in the modern treatment era, PLWH still face significant medical comorbidities and threats to their health-related quality of life. HIV appears to sensitize the peripheral nervous system and facilitate sensitivity to a painful stimulus. A growing body of evidence derived from animal models has shown a specific biological basis linking HIV to pain sensitivity. HIV is likely not the only factor contributing to greater pain sensitivity; there are also important psychosocial factors …

"Did She Have A Precursor?": The Intertextuality Of Fitzgerald's Tender Is The Night And Nabokov's Lolita, Allie Rabon Pennington Jan 2017

"Did She Have A Precursor?": The Intertextuality Of Fitzgerald's Tender Is The Night And Nabokov's Lolita, Allie Rabon Pennington

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis argues that an intertextual examination of Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night and Nabokov’s Lolita complicates our understanding of Fitzgerald’s main character, Dick Diver’s sexuality by rendering his desires as similar to those of Nabokov’s Humbert Humbert. First, by examining the biographical histories of and connections between Fitzgerald and Nabokov, I aim to illuminate the authors’ shared influences and experiences as part of their resulting novels’ intertextual relationship. The first section of this thesis applies Lolita as a lens for reading Tender Is the Night, thus highlighting Dick Diver’s problematic sexuality and presenting his character as a precedent for …

But for her cast-iron will, she would have abandoned her thorny path to greatness as it had more dry patches than grassy places.

A Control Theory Examination Of Reentry Programming, Seth Undrea Lewis Jan 2017

A Control Theory Examination Of Reentry Programming, Seth Undrea Lewis

All ETDs from UAB

The United States has a considerable prison population. More than 90 percent of prisoners will be released back into society. Faced with an increasing number of prisoners being released each year, reentry programs have become a popular tool to ensure successful reentry back into society. Research has indicated that successful completion of a reentry program reduces the likelihood that a former prisoner will return to prison. Travis Hirschi argued that when individuals have strong bonds to society they are less likely to exhibit criminal behavior. This study uses Hirschi’s social bond theory as a basis to identify factors that influence …

MOUNTING MERMAIDS ON ALLIGATORS: ESTABLISHING THE GEORGIA CONTINENTAL LINE CHRISTOPHER LONG HISTORY ABSTRACT By the summer of 1776, Georgia was committed to the idea of separation from Great Britain and the formation of a union with twelve other rebelling colonies. Due to its relative youth as a colony and the presence of a popular and dynamic governor, Geor-gia was slow to embrace the revolutionary enthusiasm which gripped the other colonies. However, once the decision was made to rebel against British authorities, Georgia’s revo-lutionary leaders were eager to demonstrate their enthusiasm for the self-described cause of liberty. The Effect Of Retouched Media Images On Body Dissatisfaction, Danielle Marie Lorch Jan 2017

The Effect Of Retouched Media Images On Body Dissatisfaction, Danielle Marie Lorch

All ETDs from UAB

Contemporary society, including social and main-stream media, perpetuate unrealistic body ideals through their promotion of slender, thin-ideal body shapes and sizes that are typically photo-shopped to appear even thinner. More specifically, portrayal of the thin-ideal can negatively influence body dissatisfaction. Viewing slender models is associated with increased body dissatisfaction, while viewing average or plus size models is associated with decreased body dissatisfaction. This difference in effect of model size (slender vs. average vs. plus-size) on body dissatisfaction varies based on whether individuals compare themselves to others they view as more or less attractive than themselves. The purpose of this study …

Teaching A Russian Media Course Based On The Theory Of Multiliteracies Pedagogy, Andrea Liebschner

Russian Language Journal

This paper is intended to provide a pedagogical framework for specific choices that instructors can make about tasks and their relationship to course goals for teaching a Russian media course to non-native speakers of Russian. The course materials involve work with literary texts, television, and the Internet. This paper first considers the New London Group’s (1996) theory of multiliteracies to build a fitting pedagogical framework for working with different types of media and communication channels in a Russian media course outside of Russia. The paper then provides an overview of existing courses about Russian media. Finally, it analyzes in detail …
