Algorithmic Aesthetics: Redefining Traditional Islamic Art, Carol Bier Jan 2017

Algorithmic Aesthetics: Redefining Traditional Islamic Art, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

The recent exhibition, “Reverberating Echoes: Contemporary Art Inspired by Traditional Islamic Art,” organized by the Center for the Arts & Religion at the Graduate Theological Union afforded an opportunity for me as curator to reconsider the definition of ‘traditional Islamic art.’ This effort led to the identification of an algorithmic aesthetic of pattern that characterizes artistic production in all media from the 9th through the 12th centuries in what were then Islamic lands, centered in Baghdad, but extending from Spain across North Africa through the Middle East and Iran to Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.

Reframing Islamic Art For The 21st Century, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

The celebrated Islamic galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York reopened in 2011 as “Galleries for the Art of Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia.” Other major collections of Islamic art have been reorganized and reinstalled in Berlin, Cairo, Cleveland, Copenhagen, Detroit, Kuwait, London, Los Angeles, Paris, and Singapore, and new museums of Islamic art have been established in Doha, Qatar; Honolulu, Hawaii; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Sharjah, U.A.E. In addition, the first museum in North America dedicated to Islamic art recently opened in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This article explores this global phenomenon, …

Alloys And Architecture: Periodic And Quasiperiodic Patterns In Sinan's Selimiye In Edirne, Carol Bier Jan 2017

Alloys And Architecture: Periodic And Quasiperiodic Patterns In Sinan's Selimiye In Edirne, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

The marble minbar of the Selimiye mosque in Edirne that was designed by the Ottoman architect, Sinan, and completed in 1575, bears a circular medallion of carved and pierced openwork in each of its triangular framing walls. The carved circular patterns are unusual in having radial symmetry with local five-fold and ten-fold rotations, but no periodic repeat. This contribution explores the relationship of this late 16th-century design to a similar array generated by X-ray diffraction of aluminum alloys, identified as a quasiperiodic pattern, which garnered the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The 16th-century appearance of this pattern in an architectural …

Capitalismo, Esquizofrenia E Raça: O Negro E O Pensamento Negro Na Modernidade Ocidental, Ingrid Robyn

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

Mbembe, Achille. Crítica da razão negra. 1. ed.

What Women Know: The Power Of Savoir In Marguerite De Navarre’S Heptaméron, Nora Martin Peterson Jan 2017

What Women Know: The Power Of Savoir In Marguerite De Navarre’S Heptaméron, Nora Martin Peterson

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

The verbs savoir and connaître appear in central moments in the Heptaméron. Knowledge—as it appears in the frame narrative and in the novellas—can be a way for men and women to debate, among many other things, the relationship between the sexes. When women use this word, or when they demonstrate that they know something, it creates the space to participate – not always unambiguously – in otherwise male-dominated conversations. How Marguerite writes about the acquisition, possession, fragmentation, or loss of knowledge, underscores her interest in exploring the role of women in communities of knowledge.

The Challenge Of Chinese Character Acquisition: Leveraging Multimodality In Overcoming A Centuries-Old Problem, Justin Olmanson, Xianquan Chrystal Liu Jan 2017

The Challenge Of Chinese Character Acquisition: Leveraging Multimodality In Overcoming A Centuries-Old Problem, Justin Olmanson, Xianquan Chrystal Liu

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

For learners unfamiliar with character-based or logosyllabic writing systems, the process of developing literacy in written Chinese poses significantly more obstacles than learning to read and write in a second language like Portuguese or Cherokee. In this article we describe the linguistic nature of Chinese characters; we outline traditional and new media approaches to Chinese character acquisition; we unpack how multimodal technologies combined with computational linguistics might be used to provide new types of support for Chinese character learning; and we offer a design that incorporates several of these concepts into a digital writing support tool that could work as …

Implications Of The Urban Landscape: Aspects Of The Isan Cultural Maintenance And Revitalization Program, John Draper Jan 2017

Implications Of The Urban Landscape: Aspects Of The Isan Cultural Maintenance And Revitalization Program, John Draper

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This article describes the multilingual landscape aspect of the Isan Culture Maintenance and Revitalization Programme (ICMRP), a 500,000-euro, four-year European Union co-sponsored cultural maintenance and revival project focusing on the Thai Lao, Thailand's largest ethnic minority community, in four municipalities in Northeast Thailand. The article begins by situating the multilingual landscape of the ICMRP within a holistic project, including manufacturing 'ethnic' student and municipal uniforms, teaching Isan as a mother tongue, recording a multimedia cultural archive, and designing and installing multilingual signage. It then argues the ICMRP's multilingual landscape should be understood within a framework involving geosemiotics, the linguistic landscape, …

Informants included five experts, eight practitioners and four related people in Yangon and Mandalay cities in …

Will-Less Contemplation Through Listening To Music - An Epistemic Process Analysis Of Arthur Schopenhauer's Concept Of Music, Tan Weng Chiang David Jan 2017

Will-Less Contemplation Through Listening To Music - An Epistemic Process Analysis Of Arthur Schopenhauer's Concept Of Music, Tan Weng Chiang David

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The will has been Arthur Schopenhauer's concept for the true inner nature or the thing-in-itself of the world. The will that is within a person causes suffering to the person. A person is driven by the will for some kind of fulfillment and once he or she attains that fulfillment, he or she very quickly moves to a new desire, otherwise boredom will set in. If the person fails to attain the fulfillment, he or she will feel dismay. Given this, a person's inner will does not allow him or her lasting fulfillment and obtaining peace and happiness. Another kind …

Reinventing The 'Native Other' In Early Hollywood: The Moroccan Woman Between Native Resistance And Orientalist Episteme In Robert Florey's Outpost In Morocco (1949) Author(S) : Hassane Oudadene, Hassane Oudadene Jan 2017

Reinventing The 'Native Other' In Early Hollywood: The Moroccan Woman Between Native Resistance And Orientalist Episteme In Robert Florey's Outpost In Morocco (1949) Author(S) : Hassane Oudadene, Hassane Oudadene

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The link between the American cinema and Morocco was established during the early twentieth century when North Africa became a central concern of both Europe and America. Western travel writers drew on generic conventions centered on wonder and the fantastic to fashion stories about the 'other side' of the world in which the West was positioned as morally and culturally superior to the East. The shift from textual to visual narratives did little to dismantle the imperialistic and Orientalist politics of cultural representation. The period between 1930 and 1956 witnessed considerable visual production on Morocco, which constituted not only a …

Influence Of Changing Thai Society On The Japanese Restaurant Industry In Bangkok, Mizue Miyamoto Jan 2017

Influence Of Changing Thai Society On The Japanese Restaurant Industry In Bangkok, Mizue Miyamoto

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The number of Japanese restaurants in Bangkok has rapidly increased in the previous decade. According to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) (2015:8), there are 2,126 Japanese restaurants in all of Thailand, and twothirds of these are located in Bangkok. The number has been increasing by 20% every year since 2007. The quality is also outstanding. Tazatsu (2008:7) states: "There is Japanese food available which Japanese people feel tasty with the most reasonable price outside Japan". There must be some reasons for this expansion, but most of the existing studies on the Japanese restaurant industry in Thailand focus only on …

Frog Metaphors In Mo Yan's Novel 蛙 /Ua55/ (Frog): A Cognitive Perspective, Yao Siqi

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

《蛙》/ua55/ (frog) by the Nobel Prize winning Chinese author Mo Yan describes China's changing its highly controversial one - child policy and system of forced abortions over the past half-century. Frog metaphors are omnipresent throughout the novel. The present study aims to investigate these metaphors within the framework of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson's Frog Metaphors in Mo Yan's Novel 蛙 /ua55/ (Frog) 123 (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the "GREAT CHAIN OF BEING" system of George Lakoff and Mark Turner (1989) to deepen our understanding of their nature and manifestations. Zoltán Kövecses's (2002) "HUMAN BEINGS ARE ANIMALS" and …

Exploring Translators' Impact On Translated Narratives: A Model Of Re-Focalization, Yinran Wu Jan 2017

Exploring Translators' Impact On Translated Narratives: A Model Of Re-Focalization, Yinran Wu

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The paper sets out to propose a model for analyzing how translators exert their impact on their translations by altering the lens from which characters and events are perceived. Built upon Rimmon-Kenan's framework (i.e. perceptual, psychological and ideological facets of focalization), an analytical model is developed to examine re-focalization as reflected between the source and target narratives—how one facet of focalization is altered into another and/or what changes are made within the same facet. The model is applied to a case analysis of the Chinese translation of Peter Hessler's China story River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze. The findings …

Out Of Chaos: Reflections Of A University President And His Contemporaries On Vietnam-Era Unrest In Mankato And Its Relevance Today, James F. Nickerson

MSU Authors Collection

Out of Chaos: Reflections of a University President and his Contemporaries on Vietnam-era Unrest in Mankato and its Relevance Today is a collection of personal reminiscences that provide a glimpse into what Mankato was like during the 1960s and 1970s. The book was created by Dr. James F. Nickerson, former Mankato State College president, with input from a variety of graduates, faculty, administrators and citizens who were witnesses to these local events. It is by piecing these stories together that the reader gets an understanding of this dynamic time period and how one person can make a difference in the …

Civil War Or Genocide? The United Nations Commission Of Experts’ Misunderstanding Of The Third Balkan War Of The 1990s, Matthew G. Morley Jan 2017

Civil War Or Genocide? The United Nations Commission Of Experts’ Misunderstanding Of The Third Balkan War Of The 1990s, Matthew G. Morley

Grand Valley Journal of History

When the country of Yugoslavia disintegrated into war, the United Nations created a research commission, the Yugoslav Commission of Experts, to document war crimes. This commission, led by Cherif M. Bassiouni, depicted the conflict as a perpetual problem with historical roots and also as having victims on both sides, which presented a legal-definitional paradox to the Security Council, requiring litigation of principles, categorization of conflicts, and discussion of further involvement - if applicable. This paper traces the essentialist understandings of the Commission of Experts and the International Human Rights Law Institute – two groups that otherwise had good intentions to …

Persistent Problems In Modified Divine Command Theory, Brandon Trey Jackson Jan 2017

Persistent Problems In Modified Divine Command Theory, Brandon Trey Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I argue that there are persistent problems in contemporary modifications of divine command theory. Divine command theory states that God’s commands are moral obligations only because he commands them. Modified divine command theories attempt to add to or amend the justification for God’s commands being moral obligations. The problem is that they aren’t successful at escaping the Euthyprho dilemma, which states the following of God’s commands: they are either a) moral obligations because they are commanded by God, or they are b) commanded by God because they are moral obligations. Modified divine command theories attempt to navigate between these two …

The False Intent-Purpose Distinction In Textualism, Aaron Graham Jan 2017

The False Intent-Purpose Distinction In Textualism, Aaron Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Textualism is the theory of legislative interpretation championed most famously by the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Textualism adopts twin interpretive commitments: (1) the meaning of a legislative text should be discerned by application of long-established canons of construction, the most important of which is that the text means what its words convey; and (2) a legislative text means what it meant at the time it was enacted. This paper examines the first principle, and in particular Scalia and treatise coauthor Bryan A. Garner’s belief that it mandates that judges forswear any consideration of legislative intent. This paper assess …

Object Of Your Rejection: The Symbolic Annihilation And Recuperation Of Queer Identities In Country Music, Lauren Veline Jan 2017

Object Of Your Rejection: The Symbolic Annihilation And Recuperation Of Queer Identities In Country Music, Lauren Veline

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the double-marginalization of white queers living in Bible Belt communities by examining the symbolic annihilation of queer identities in country music. Bible Belt queers face unique obstacles and have different needs than queer communities elsewhere due to the cultural context of their communities. The urban-centric (“metronormative”) standards of queer identity and visibility presented in the media do not translate to their lived experiences. Moreover, while white, non-urban southerners possess a source of popular-media expression through country music, queer identities are noticeably absent. The invisibility of Bible Belt queers in the media perpetuates a cycle of hostility and …

Interwoven, Preston Tolbert Jan 2017

Interwoven, Preston Tolbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I am regularly amazed by the power of artifacts. Objects can translate intent, skill, function, place, and time, causing us to reflect upon the maker and past users. By incorporating basketry patterns on the surface of my pots, I am creating a connection to my heritage. My family made baskets back many generations. The patterns are incomplete and fade as they weave around the forms. This reflects the nature of objects that have been used to the point of collapse. We live in a society driven by partial consumption and indiscriminant disposal. When something exhibits wear, we get a new …

Southern Discomfort: Performing Femininity In The Deep South, Rachel Whitney Turnipseed Jan 2017

Southern Discomfort: Performing Femininity In The Deep South, Rachel Whitney Turnipseed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The “performance” of gender is variable and multifarious, fabricated in reaction to audience, mood, and previous experiences. Starting in childhood, people “police” our gender performances, and profoundly shape our self-presentation and sense of personal identity. We gradually learn to self-edit our performances of gender, after countless critiques by others, which often negatively impact our body image as they preserve “norms,” marginalizing anyone who does not conform. The mixed-media installation, Southern Discomfort: Performing Femininity in the Deep South, examines this process and its impact on young girls. The young, blonde, female figure who appears multiple times in my installation reveal girls …

The Effects Of Participation In Band On Band Music Preference, Benny Ratliff Jan 2017

The Effects Of Participation In Band On Band Music Preference, Benny Ratliff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on band music preference, and specifically, how this preference is affected by participation in band. With this knowledge I argue that band directors can select repertoire that both challenges and engages students while still being enjoyable to perform. Despite the existence of studies that consider the many factors that affect music preference, no study has focused exclusively on band music, which remains a vital part of music education in the United States. Students from three high schools rated ten 30-second examples of concert music on a Likert-type scale. I placed these musical examples into five self-defined categories: …

The Effect Of A Researcher Composed Mouthpiece Buzzing Routine On The Intonation And Tone Quality Of Beginning Band Brass Students, Jason William Beghtol

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study is an investigation of the effect of an author composed mouthpiece buzzing routine modeled by the teacher on beginning band brass students’ intonation and tone quality. The subjects (N = 43) were sixth grade beginning band brass students from a large band program in the northeast region of Mississippi. The experimental group (n = 27) buzzed a daily routine modeled by their instructor at the beginning of each class period. The control group (n = 16) received no treatment and proceeded through normal classroom activities. The duration of the instructional period was ten weeks. This study utilized …

A “Human Endeavor”: Killing In Contemporary U.S. Combat Narratives, William Mackenzie Jan 2017

A “Human Endeavor”: Killing In Contemporary U.S. Combat Narratives, William Mackenzie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This PH.D dissertation aims to develop a 3-D numerical model of dam-break flows on movable beds. Three tasks are defined to accomplish the goal of this study. The first task is developing a 3-D hydrodynamic model to simulate dam-break flow on fixed beds with simple geometry and test the water surface tracking technique. This model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations using a finite-difference method on rectilinear, staggered grids. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique with SOLA-VOF advection scheme is used to capture the free surface motion. The developed model is tested using several experimental dam-break flows and the VOF technique is …
