A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison Jan 2017

A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Central to a theology of feasting is the nearness and newness of the Kingdom of God. Engaging Levinas’ philosophy, this article develops a theology of feasting to portray the intimacy of encountering the risen Christ’s word of goodness, mercy and joy in the poor one’s face. Such intimacy relates the joy of being children of God, seeking to know the Father’s forgiveness and prophetic call not to forget ‘the least of these who are members of my family’ (Mat 25:40), namely, “the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame” (Lk 14:3), chosen by God to feast in the Kingdom …

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg Jan 2017

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Violence in relationships is a common experience for a significant number of women. VicHealth (Australia) has noted that one of the underlying and contributing factors towards violence against women is their environment, citing ‘faith-based institutions’ such as churches as one such environment for many women. Indeed, international research shows that the language of religion is often used by women to explain abuse. Additionally, abused Christian women are more likely to remain in or return to unsafe relationships, citing religious beliefs to support avoidance of ‘family break-ups’ despite abuse. In contrast, however, churches can address domestic violence within a context of …

Wisdom As Loving Knowledge In Dag Hammarskjold's Markings, Thomas Ryan Jan 2017

Wisdom As Loving Knowledge In Dag Hammarskjold's Markings, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The inter-relationship of the affective and the cognitive is an issue in the spiritual and moral fields of the Christian tradition. Drawing on the analogical use of the ‘spiritual senses’ together with insights from virtue ethics, this article investigates wisdom as loving knowledge in Dag Hammarskjöld’s Markings. The article has five stages: first, the various forms of love present in Hammarskjöld’s reflections are outlined; second, after a brief explanation of affective/cognitive aspect of the spiritual senses, it probes a representative text in Marking on the process of knowing and loving God; third, it analyses key passages in the journal concerning …

'Weakness, And Wounded And Troubled Love' In Amoris Laetitia: Pope Francis As Pastor, Thomas Ryan Jan 2017

'Weakness, And Wounded And Troubled Love' In Amoris Laetitia: Pope Francis As Pastor, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

‘Accompanying, Discerning and Integrating Weakness’ is the ‘contested’ chapter 8 of Pope Francis’s postsynodal allocution ‘The Joy of Love’ (Amoris Laetitia). This collegial document can be approached from various perspectives, for example, in its historical and theological context; in its significance for moral theology; in its reception within local churches. The aim here is pastoral, namely, to clarify the chapter’s content and, specifically, its implications for the faithful and those engaged in pastoral ministry.

Poe's Gothic Soul In "Metzengerstein": An Invitation To Look Inside, Elizabeth Peek Jan 2017

Poe's Gothic Soul In "Metzengerstein": An Invitation To Look Inside, Elizabeth Peek

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

The following paper examines Poe’s affair with German tradition, particularly Gothic and Romantic writing, through an analysis of his short story “Metzengerstein.” This short story is not only rich with the conventions of Gothic fiction, but also rings with an autobiographical tone. The added piece of Poe himself in this text implies his own Gothic origins. I imply that Poe was a natural Romantic, with the purpose of bringing his own terror to a larger audience. The German gloom in “Metzengerstein” was authentic, not an imitation. I come to the conclusion that Poe’s production of literary horror – in the …

The American Hero In A Hawaiian Myth: Convergence Of Cultures In London’S “Koolau The Leper”, Morgan Daniels Jan 2017

The American Hero In A Hawaiian Myth: Convergence Of Cultures In London’S “Koolau The Leper”, Morgan Daniels

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

Jack London’s “Koolau the Leper” (1912) tells the story of a leprous Hawaiian who refuses to be reallocated to Molokai by the American government. During Koolau’s last stand, he keeps the American army at bay despite their superior weaponry. The story ends with Koolau dying from leprosy a free man on Kauai, his island home. Critics have long debated what this story reveals about London’s viewpoint on American imperialism and colonialism. I would like to augment this understanding by suggesting that London’s critique of American imperialism is in itself an act of imperialism. I propose that Jack London’s “Koolau the …

Dante’S Divine Comedy: A Pastoral Subversion, Katie Francom Jan 2017

Dante’S Divine Comedy: A Pastoral Subversion, Katie Francom

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

This paper attempts to widen the scholarly understanding of Dante’s use of pastoral modes within The Divine Comedy. By examining typical pastoral themes, Dante’s use of Virgil as a guide, and the presence of pastoral themes within the Comedy, this paper will ultimately assert that Dante completely reshapes the pastoral genre, taking it from its typically pagan history and giving it new, Christian meaning. By so doing he makes his beautifully artistic story into an enlightening spiritual journey for the reader.

The Good Life, Molly Kelley Jan 2017

The Good Life, Molly Kelley

Writing Across the Curriculum

Throughout generations the world has constantly progressed through medicine and technology, which has led to our inevitable evolution. But, a part of society that has not changed is our main individual goals of reaching “the good life,” as shown as evidence in literature. Authors like Plato, Aristotle, and those of the Bible wrote about the importance of happiness, virtues, and education as they pertain to this journey to “the good life.” Many feel that what they state is still pertinent today.

The Moral High Road In The Undercity: An Examination Of Ethics In A Mumbai Slum, Mary L. Bauer Jan 2017

The Moral High Road In The Undercity: An Examination Of Ethics In A Mumbai Slum, Mary L. Bauer

Catholic Studies Faculty Publications

As of 2016, 1.6 billion people around the globe lacked proper shelter and of these, one billion lived in informal settlements, also called slums, according to data collected by the United Nations (UN-Habitat 2016). Investigative journalist Katherine Boo spent four years, between 2007 and 2011, interviewing and shadowing the residents of one such slum on the outskirts of Mumbai. Her goal was to draw attention to socio-economic inequality (Boo, 2014 pp. 247-248), but in the course of collecting data about the consequences of poverty and residents’ attempts to rise out of it, she also recorded information about their moral choices, …

A Communal Bridge: The Detroit Jewish News, The Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation And The Detroit Jewish Community In 1942, Alan Mark Hurvitz Jan 2017

A Communal Bridge: The Detroit Jewish News, The Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation And The Detroit Jewish Community In 1942, Alan Mark Hurvitz

Wayne State University Theses

While many historians writing about Jews in America focus on dissonance and disorganization during the 1940s among national Jewish leadership and national Jewish organizations which accounts (partially) for their inability to effectively advocate for European Jewry, Zionism, and other Jewish causes, this was not necessarily true on a local level. Jews in Detroit were effective in raising funds for these causes, supporting institutional infrastructure, battling anti-Semitism, and participating in the war effort. An important part of that was a unique partnership entered into between the nascent Detroit Jewish News and the established Detroit Jewish Federation, the most important part of …

The Narrative Of The Outsider: Marginalization In The Works Of María Luisa Bemberg, Lucrecia Martel, And Lucía Puenzo, Natalie Nagl Jan 2017

The Narrative Of The Outsider: Marginalization In The Works Of María Luisa Bemberg, Lucrecia Martel, And Lucía Puenzo, Natalie Nagl

Wayne State University Dissertations

Through film and literature, my dissertation explores the representation of race, social class, and gender in the works of three Argentine directors. These social constructs have become so ingrained in interpersonal relations that there is rigidity in how they are considered. Therefore, those individuals who do not think and interact appropriately with the constructs occupy the outside. The possibility of marginalization adds another layer to the constructs by sensitizing them to the point that they affect the individual and their relationships (i.e. psychologically and socially). However, several representations, such as those that make up our corpus, challenge the definitions of …
