Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

Drawing on a little-known work by Scott-Moncrieff, this article investigates Luigi Pirandello’s intellectual and literary reach across genres and space, from theater to pamphlets, from Italy to the English-speaking world. A talented writer and translator, Charles K. Scott-Moncrieff published “The Strange & Striking Adventures of Four Authors in Search of a Character” by P. G. Lear & L. O in 1926. The title of the pamphlet, and the acronym of the fictional author are references to Pirandello and to his Six Characters in Search of an Author. The question of fiction is omnipresent within the work of Paul Ricoeur throughout his prolific career. However, Ricoeur raises the questions of fiction in relation to other issues such the symbol, metaphor and narrative. This article sets out to foreground a traditional problem of fiction and logic, which is termed the existence of non-existent objects, in relation to the Paul Ricoeur’s work on narrative. Ricoeur’s understanding of fiction takes place within his overall philosophical anthropology where the fictions and histories make up the very nature of identity both personal and collective. Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to compare the use of figurative language between master and novice instrumental music teachers and to investigate their attitudes toward figurative language as a teaching tool. Figurative language is defined as any creative verbal instruction intended to teach a concept. Sixteen (N = 16) secondary school, instrumental directors were selected as participants. These were divided into two groups of novice and master teachers. Novice teachers were student teachers or first-year teachers, and master teachers had a minimum of eight years of experience, were selected as master teachers by professors at state universities and …

It is the recommendation of this author that, in regards to this case, Jess Smith should complete the project despite her misgivings about the ethical nature of the band. However, Smith should ensure that both the client and manager are notified of her concerns along with the specific components of the project with which she took issue. The case of Jess Smith and the Design Firm ultimately highlights the issue regarding how to resolve dissonance between personal belief and professional values and more broadly the challenge of facing other ideas that challenge an individual’s personal convictions.

While many "soft" writing tutoring skills have helped Hammons in her classroom, she finds that not all tutoring skills transfer well to teaching. Hammons is complimentary of peer tutoring's emphasis on wait time, silence, and adapting to individual needs. However, she finds she does not need these skills as often in teaching because of the long-term relationship she has with her students. Hammons asserts that better student and tutor education on the purpose of writing centers--along with students visiting the same tutor repeatedly-- will help tutors and students make the most of their brief time together.

Writing Center Analysis Papers

Blake asserts that English teachers and writing tutors both strive to answer students' problems by addressing language skills, grammar, assignment requirements, and brainstorming. He warns that students' concerns must come first, even if teachers and tutors find alternative concerns in the students' writing. After helping students address their concerns more thoroughly, students can take advantage of writing center tutors to make more universal changes.

As a non-traditional graduate student and peer writing tutor, Itchuaqiaq explores the challenges she and other older students encounter connecting with their much-younger undergraduate tutees. Itchuaquiq includes several reflections from other non-traditional graduate peer tutors that explain the struggles they face establishing an appropriate peer power balance. Additionally, Itchuaquiq calls for more writing center research on how age affects tutees' writing center perceptions and experiences.

The women of the Old Testament were not merely ancillary to the men. From the matriarchal era down to the monarchical period, the Old Testament eloquently attests to the equality and shared responsibility between man and woman. The creation of הָֽאָדָם֙ (mankind) in the image and likeness of God confers on both the male and female an ontological equality; an equality that is shown in their joint authority over creation (Genesis 1:27-28). This novel in stories explores the viewpoint of an unnamed, agender narrator as they navigate their life from childhood into early adulthood. Through the narrator's unique lens, the stories explore gender, sexuality, mental illness, family, and loneliness. The narrator's struggles with belonging and overarching feelings of abandonment intertwine with the sometimes isolating and dangerous landscape of Florida. From their interactions with both Florida and the people who pass through their life, the narrator begins to learn how to accept who are they are, without apology.

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin

This chapter examines U.S.-based approaches to curricular revision of the Rhetoric and Writing Minor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) through analysis of faculty interviews and relevant artifacts. Through this analysis, and consideration of AUC’s development in the context of changes in Egypt, the chapter argues that U.S.-based curricular approaches satisfied various local needs among AUC’s writing faculty and students. These findings complicate claims within international composition studies, which are concerned with non-reflective export of U.S. linguistic, pedagogical and program models into international sites. This chapter calls for expanding the perspective of U.S.-based approaches to composition studies to include …
