During August 2017, Goshawk Environmental Consulting, Inc. (Goshawk) conducted seven cultural resources surveys within the Eagle Ford Play, Central Eagle Ford Zone at the request of EOG Resources, Inc. (EOG). (AmaTerra) for the 9.1-acre tract in Granbury, Hood County, Texas. As a federal grant has been provided to the developer by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the project will be subject to the provisions of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended.

This is an archeological study of the McGee Bend Reservoir (Sam Rayburn Reservoir) area of eastern Texas as revealed through the analysis of 14 sites that were excavated there between 1956 and 1962. The reservoir, currently under construction on the Angelina River near Jasper, will be some 50 miles long when completed in 1965, with major arms extending up Ayish and Attoyac bayous. The lake will be named for the late Sam Rayburn.

The first step for any project is the research to fit the needs for residents and staff alike. South Hall was built in the 1950s providing a historical aspect to it. It was built with a post-modern design using brick and concrete. Although it is important to keep the flavor of the original post-modern exterior design, the importance of renovating the building to accommodate security, bringing up to code, technology, security, better retention, and comfortable environment is crucial to this design.

Researchers at two universities worked with project partners to develop indigenous interpretive curriculum that provided the tools for indigenous students to tell their own stories and market their own heritage to visitors seeking an authentic experience. Project partners sought to identify elements that exemplify a culturally grounded approach to indigenous interpretation. It is assumed that indigenous interpretation will provide opportunities for non-native visitors to have meaningful experiences of native culture. It is also assumed that indigenous interpretation will foster a deeper understanding of the sacredness of native homelands, the resiliency and vulnerability of natural and cultural systems, and the beauty …

Stephen F. Austin State University's Residence Life Department aims to improve resident retention in South Hall through renovation and interior design. By improving the spaces meant for student use, we hope to increase the involvement and comfort of the residents. The existing structure was not designed for today's amenities and accessibility standards. By enlarging doorways, adding an elevator, and de-compartmentalizing the community spaces, the building becomes much more accessible to people with disabilities. These open spaces also fit into the contemporary styles of living and promote interaction between the residents and other occupants.

Our team was challenged to design an assisted living (AL) facility for county residents with dementia when their condition ultimately prevents their continued participation in the Nacogdoches Treatment Center's (NTC) Day Activity Program. The NTC is a non-profit facility founded in 1972. Its mission is to provide needed services that are not being met by the community. With the new facility, patients may transition seamlessly from the daily program to a permanent living space, surrounded by familiar faces and loving care.

Concept Statement Inspired by the Novel, we were drawn to the character Claudia as her mental state transformed from innocent child into a malicious hellion. As a vampire, Claudia struggled with the idea that she would never physically age. We developed a two-part outfit with this internal conflict in mind. The first of which, will represent Claudia as an innocent child, using our soft good materials from Cronan and Associates. The second part will represent her mental transformation into a dangerous and sleek predator using both soft goods from Cronan and Associates and hard goods from Daltile.

In 1968, the skeletal remains of an individual believed to have been involved in the Gutiérrez-Magee expedition of 1812-1813 were exhumed south of San Antonio. Since then, the circumstances surrounding what became known as the “Blue Wing Road burial” have remained somewhat of a mystery. This article introduces a new theory that posits that the burial is not directly related to the major battles fought in the region (the Battles of Rosalis and Medina), but more likely an incident involving a Republican detachment encountering Royalists stationed along a well-travelled route.

Archaeological investigations at Fort Brown (41CF96) have provided a wealth of information about military life in south Texas. This re-analysis of the faunal material recovered by the Archaeological Research Laboratory’s survey efforts in 1988 investigates butchering patterns found at the site. While evidence for modern European American cuts are present, processing of beef os coxae and sacrum are inconsistent with current European American butchery practices. The assemblage is dominated by inexpensive cuts of meat that would have allowed for easy cooking within stews or soups. The butchery patterns seen at Fort Brown are compared to early twentieth century military standards …

Stone Point Services completed a cultural resources survey for a proposed 55-hectare (137-acre) county park in Cypress, Texas. The study area consists of an irregularly shaped former subdivision located southwest of Grant Road in Cypress, Texas. The project area is primarily wooded with mature oaks and pines mixed with a few ornamental trees and is bounded to the northwest by Cypress Creek. Field investigations were conducted between July 27 and July 28, 2017. Survey methods included a pedestrian archaeological survey with shovel testing. (TAS) conducted a cultural resource survey of the Ivy Berdoll 53-acre tract in southeast Travis County, Texas for Kleinfelder, acting as agents for Del Valle ISD. The survey tract is located north of Del Valle High School, south of State Highway 71 and east of Ross Road. The work was conducted by TAS staff Billy Turner and Terry Burgess, under the authority of Texas Antiquities Permit 8168 with Dr. Jeff Turpin acting as Principal Investigator. As an archaeologist, it is often difficult to empathize with looters and collectors, but we would like to ask that you put aside any pre-conceived notions of judgment as we consider the question: when does a looter’s tool become an artifact? For the two of us, this particular dialogue began in the summer of 2013 on an excavation at Sierra Diablo Cave in western Texas. In that cave was a winch that we assume was constructed on or near the site as a tool for excavating deposits near the rear of the cave.

Textile Terminologies from the Orient to the Mediterranean and Europe, 1000 BC to 1000 AD

The semantic field of Latin licium and its plural form licia is undoubtedly wide, with the term applied to thread both generally and in specific legal, medical and magical usage as well as in relation to weaving, and this paper does not aim to survey Latin usage of this term comprehensively. Rather, it focuses on one of the uses of licia in Latin literary sources, namely those where licia appears to denote heddle-leashes. Two much-discussed passages occur in Augustan poetry where licia may be used in this sense: Vergil’s Georgics 1.285 and Tibullus elegy 1.6.79. Both passages have been subject …

This essay provides insight into the social and cultural trends that led to the creation of hospice care in the United States. The essay covers the changes in treatment of death by the medical profession, from the discussion of tuberculosis sanatoriums and cancer centers in the early 1900s through the rise of medical authority, and the pivotal role of Yale School of Nursing dean Florence Wald in the 1980 opening of Connecticut Hospice, the first modern American hospice facility.
