World in the 20th Century
This lesson plan for high school students in World History and United States History courses is related to Augusto Pinochet's 1973 coup d'etat in Chile. Students will simulate a fictitious United Nations General Assembly Meeting in December 1973 to address the crisis in Chile. Bilingual Spanish Vowels: The Case Of Heritage Speakers, Megan E. Solon, Nyssa Knarvik, Joshua Declerck
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Other Graduate Student Scholarship
Previous research on heritage Spanish vowel production has revealed consistent and systematic differences—including asymmetry in the vowel space, condensing and fronting of back vowels, and reduction and centralization of unstressed vowels—as compared to traditional descriptions of the monolingual Spanish vowel triangle. The present study takes another look at heritage Spanish vowels (both quality and quantity), using a group of “homeland” native Spanish-speaking late Spanish-English bilinguals for comparison purposes. Data for both groups were collected via a dyadic, meaning-focused task. Results revealed significant differences between heritage and homeland groups in front and mid-vowel quality, but no differences in vowel quantity. Additionally, …

Evaluative Reactions To Nonnative Spanish, Nyssa Knarvik, Cecily Corbett

This study investigates whether there is a relationship between the native Spanish “Rater” evaluative reactions of Spanish spoken by second-language learners, called “Talkers,” based on the distance of their first language from Spanish. The Talkers’ first languages are grouped by distance from Spanish: close (Brazilian Portuguese and French), mid (Serbian and Polish), and far (Korean and Chinese). The Raters (n=50) are played recordings of the six Talkers reading the same story in Spanish and they are asked to rate each Talker on a 7-point Likert scale in 15 different categories (e.g. unintelligent/intelligent, easy/difficult to understand, and outgoing/shy). A Study In The Humor Of The Old Northeast: Joseph C. Neal's Charcoal Sketches And The Comic Urban Frontier Studies In American Humor, David E.E. Sloane

Joseph C. Neal pioneered the urban frontier of the Old Northeast in depicting what he called "hard cases" from the Philadelphia slums in the long-overlooked Charcoal Sketches, first published in book form in 1838. His characters' inability to change with the times, their false and vulnerable toughness, and their urban vernacular language look forward to the humor of Mark Twain, political commentators, and radio and TV sitcoms. In Neal's work, the cash economy, the lightly ironic euphuistic character study, and metaphors of the city are used to describe the new social and ethical paradoxes of the urban-industrial world already emerging …

Association Of Sex Drive, Gender, And Infidelity In Romantic Relationships, Mari Eik
The Cosenza Prize for Undergraduate Writing: Winning Papers
This study examined the association between sex drive and infidelity based on gender differences. All participants had either been in a serious relationship in the past, or were currently in one. The sample was compromised of students from a Northeastern university in America (N=60). Those who reported having a high sex drive were more likely to engage in infidelity. However, there were only partial statistically significant results for men being more unfaithful than women. Infidelity was examined using two measures, Perception of Dating Infidelity Scale (Wilson, Mattingly, Clark, Weidler & Bequette, 2011) with no statistically significant gender difference, and a …

The main purpose of this thesis is to present, discuss and criticize the effect of negative body imagining caused by social media. This will be achieved in part by explaining the history of women and the change of their appearances and Body Mass Index during different times in history. Sing A New Song To The City: Ambient Rhetoric And Urban Hymns, Adam J. Copeland

Hymns are a key component of how Christians express their faith. But many of these hymns do represent the rhythms and sensibilities of an older and largely agrarian world. Using the concept of “ambient rhetoric,” Adam Copeland suggests that it is time for other hymns that represent the ethos of daily life in an increasingly urbanized world, hymns that will speak to the realities of urban culture.

This sequential explanatory mixed methods research project investigates the spiritual discernment processes of a Christian congregation in the United Church of Christ. The study identifies most utilized and most helpful practices of spiritual discernment within the areas of prayer, conversation, community, and media. This research shows how engaging spiritual practices influences participation in decision making by Christian congregations.
