I composed my first song in the early 1970s, but all but one of the songs listed here were written after my fifty-fifth birthday in 2008—indeed, the vast majority of what I have composed was written since then. What follows are the lyrics to some of my songs. For each song, I’ve made comments that provide context, an explanation of the sources that I’ve used for inspiration, and what I was thinking in composing the piece. All of the recordings of the songs were made at Phil Ward’s Woodland Studios in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Arkansas Heritage Sites under the direction of Dr. Ruth Hawkins has become one of Arkansas State University’s most successful endeavors for developing heritage tourism in the state of Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta. To understand the processes of restoring a building and transforming it into a community museum, I apply the theories of the politics of culture in historic restoration projects and culture conservation. This case study reviews the problematic complexities of creating and opening a museum with a complex past. Museums are community educational repositories that preserve a particular past. Gender Dynamics In Sanctified Storefront Churches: A Study Of The Roles And Challenges Of Female Pastors In Mississippi County, Arkansas, Gloria Robinson Boyd

Sanctified churches in Mississippi County, consistent with others throughout the South, trace their origin back to slavery where African men and women secretly gathered and, through their efforts, evolved the invisible institution comprised of blended European and African beliefs and practices. As this entity expanded, so did the need for additional organizations that supported socio-economic and educational development of the race. Hence, from the invisible church emerged African American denominations with some meeting in homes or abandoned commercial properties starting a trend of what is now considered Sanctified storefront churches. In Arkansas’s long path toward joining its neighbors in the South in the political realignment of the post-Civil Rights era, it can appear to the casual observer that the state was locked in a process in which its politics and its culture were engaged in a longstanding tug-of-war. This conflict could have explained why Arkansas was so late to embrace “New South Republicanism” in comparison to its neighbors. However, to assert that the Populist versus New Right comparison explains this slow transition would be more akin to a theory or even talking points advanced by ratings-driven national news commentators. Public understanding of the Civil War is a product of various sources that sometimes offer competing interpretations of the conflict and its meaning. Among these sources are Civil War sites that can offer connections to the past through the tangible element of place. Questions arise regarding the nature of the interpretation offered and the mechanisms historic sites use to relate their narrative to the public. Porter examines the issue through a study of six Civil War-related sites in Arkansas, assessing the scope and presentation of each site’s story. A fundamental task of worship leadership is giving witness to God. Although we do not see God, we do see evidence of God’s work in the world. We bear witness to God’s work in worship through songs, stories, prayers, and words, and we prompt the congregation to do the same as they embody each action of worship. In this seminar, we will explore the ways worshiping communities name, or give witness to, those things that are seen and unseen. Then, we will imagine how communities similar to or different from our own might teach us about our own faithful witness.

A critical task of 21st century worship leadership is to name pressing issues, and give confident witness to the reality of God’s presence in sometimes difficult circumstances. In this seminar, we will identify pressing issues in local and global worshiping communities. Then we will engage past and present worshiping communities as case studies to identify their approach to urgent issues. Finally we will imagine how these communities might teach us about giving confident witness to those issues that are urgent in our time and place.

Evaluation Of A Community-Based Positive Youth Development Program For Adolescents With Greater Psychosocial Needs: Views Of The Program Participants, Daniel T. L. Shek, Cecilia M. S. Ma, Moon Y. M. Law, Zoe Zhao

The present study attempted to investigate the perceptions of Chinese secondary school students with greater psychosocial needs of the Tier 2 Program in the community-based phase of P.A.T.H.S. Project in Hong Kong (n=4245). Using a subjective outcome evaluation tool (Form C), the results revealed that a great majority of the students held positive attitudes toward the program, implementers and the effectiveness of the program. Also, the three domains of the program (“program quality”, “implementer quality” and “program effectiveness”) were significantly associated with each other. In line with previous findings, both program content and program implementer quality were significant predictors of …

Using a subjective outcome evaluation method, the current study investigated program implementers’ perceptions of the Tier 1 Program of the community-based P.A.T.H.S. Project in Hong Kong. After completion of the program, 599 program implementers completed a valid and reliable scale (i.e. Form B) to give their ratings on program content, their own performance, and perceived program effectiveness. As expected, most program implementers perceived the program in a favorable way by giving very positive ratings on the three aspects measured in Form B. Grade differences on the ratings were observed, with implementers teaching the senior curriculum held more positive views on …

The present study adopted subjective outcome evaluation to examine program effectiveness from the views of implementers (N=375) who implemented the community-based Tier 2 Program of the Project P.A.T.H.S. in Hong Kong. The results revealed that most of the program implementers were satisfied with the program content, their own performance, and program benefits. In agreement with previous studies, the satisfaction ratings of both program content and implementer performance positively predicted perceived program benefits. Regarding the influences of different program delivery approaches, programs with the “interest-enhancement” (INT) element received a more positive evaluation from implementers than did the programs without that element. …
