Rulers, Religion, And Riches: Why The West Got Rich And The Middle East Did Not, Jared Rubin
Rulers, Religion, And Riches: Why The West Got Rich And The Middle East Did Not, Jared Rubin
Economics Faculty Books and Book Chapters
For centuries following the spread of Islam, the Middle East was far ahead of Europe. Yet, the modern economy was born in Europe. Why was it not born in the Middle East? In this book Jared Rubin examines the role that Islam played in this reversal of fortunes. It argues that the religion itself is not to blame; the importance of religious legitimacy in Middle Eastern politics was the primary culprit. Muslim religious authorities were given an important seat at the political bargaining table, which they used to block important advancements such as the printing press and lending at interest. …
Sexy Robots: A Perpetuation Of Patriarchy, Ashlyn Des Roches
Sexy Robots: A Perpetuation Of Patriarchy, Ashlyn Des Roches
Communication Studies
This feminist critique looks into the way that gender, specifically females, are portrayed in some of Hollywood's top films involving Artificial Intelligence: Blade Runner, Her, and Ex Machina. These movies work as a perpetuation of patriarchal ideologies while maintaining the objectification and hypersexuality of women as normalized behaviors. Additionally, while some forms of empowerment are conveyed, the features illustrate women merely on a spectrum of extreme behavior; due to Heuristics and Cultivation Theory, these misrepresentations can be associated with women outside the surrealist realm of the depicted artificially intelligent worlds.

An Iterative 3d Gis Analysis Of The Role Of Visibility In Ancient Maya Landscapes: A Case Study From Copan, Honduras, Heather Richards-Rissetto
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
For several decades, Geographic Information Systems (GISs) have held center stage in archaeological studies of ancient landscapes. Recently, three-dimensional (3D) technologies such as airborne LiDAR and aerial photogrammetry are allowing us to acquire inordinate amounts of georeferenced 3D data to locate, map, and visualize archaeological sites within their surrounding landscapes. GIS offers locational precision, data overlay, and complex spatial analysis. Three-dimensionality adds a ground-based perspective lacking in two-dimensional GIS maps to provide archaeologists a sense of mass and space more closely attuned with human perception. This article uses comparative and iterative approaches ‘tacking back and forth’ between GIS and 3D …
Community As A Constant: An Oral History Project Exploring The Recent History Of The Boise Police Department, Chelsee Kay Boehm
Community As A Constant: An Oral History Project Exploring The Recent History Of The Boise Police Department, Chelsee Kay Boehm
History Graduate Projects and Theses
The Boise Police Department demonstrates the power of community policing techniques. Significant incidents, like officer-involved shootings and a scandal at City Hall, as well as nation-wide trends, pushed the Boise Police Department to embrace this method of law enforcement. To better understand this significant turning point for the Boise Police Department and its results, oral history interviews documented the stories of individuals involved. Using the oral histories for possible museum exhibitions, this project illustrates how the relationship between the Boise Police Department and the people of Boise improved between 1990 and 2014.

Research To Establish The Validity, Reliability, And Clinical Utility Of A Comprehensive Language Assessment Of Mandarin, Xueman Lucy Liu, Jill De Villiers, Chunyan Ning, Eric Rolfhus, Teresa Hutchings, Wendy Lee, Fan Jiang, Yi Wen Zhang
Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Purpose
With no existing gold standard for comparison, challenges arise for establishing the validity of a new standardized Mandarin language assessment normed in mainland China.
Method
A new assessment, Diagnostic Receptive and Expressive Assessment of Mandarin (DREAM), was normed with a stratified sample of 969 children ages 2;6 (years;months) to 7;11 in multiple urban and nonurban regions in northern and southern China. In this study of 230 children, the sensitivity and specificity of DREAM were examined against an a priori judgment of disorders. External validity was assessed using 2 indices of language production for different age groups.
Results
External validity …
The Trial Of Pilate - A Touchstone To The Death Of Jesus, Paul N. Anderson
The Trial Of Pilate - A Touchstone To The Death Of Jesus, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Following on the Finding Jesus CNN series two years ago, this new six-week series extends beyond the book by David Gibson and Michael McKinley[1] toward examining other historical artifacts and their relations to the portraits of Jesus we find in the Gospels. The first episode, “The Pilate Stone,” focuses on the historical impact of Pontius Pilate, who sentenced Jesus to death. Despite being largely unknown otherwise, Pilate’s importance is paramount in world history. According to the narrator, without the death (and resurrection) of Jesus, the Christian movement would not have been born, and according to Michael Peppard, without Pontius Pilate, …

Design Philosophy
I value design as a tool to create spaces that help my client live more comfortable lives. First, I believe that to create a better tomorrow we need to construct sustainably today to preserve our remaining resources. Secondly, I believe that spaces should be designed universally so that they support the client throughout the lifespan. Lastly, I believe that both sustainable and universally designed spaces should reflect imagination and beauty; everyone is entitled to good design.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
I believe that every interior should embrace a simple, sophisticated, and refreshing environment. Everything I create should meet the clients style and personal needs. By designing an atmosphere that reflects an individuals personality and enhances the functionality of the space, the user is left with a fun and organized environment that is truly their own unique home.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
"Interior Design is not always what we see on TV. The beauty of this career is much more than aesthetics like people think. Design is all about the process behind the results. Great design considers the function and human use. The future and sustainability should always be considered in design because the goal is to create spaces that can be used for years and years to come. To become a great designer, one must consider the wants of the client before the wants of oneself. As a designer, the goal is to design spaces that are livable and …

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Design is creating a space that is sustainable, serviceable, and stylish. Design reflects where clients have been and what inspires them. There are countless styles from which people may choose to reflect who they are. The designs must be innovative and efficient throughout the design process to manage client requests with good design practice. The result is a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing and functional but good for their health, and for the environment.

Philosophy Statement
In the creative side of the world, it is fairly common for one to be “innovatively altered” and “unusual” if a designer or an artist. As designers, we are imaginative individuals that recognize a level of emotion beyond the structure needed to design for function and safety. The strong connection to emotion is what compel us through our design process. Designers are alike for which we do not design for ourselves; we create for others. Some designers and artists may be “unusual” and “strangely different” but it is not a flaw. This is part of the individual nature …

Design Philosophy
IN THE WISE WORDS OF ROBIN SIEGERMAN, “DESIGN IS ABOUT MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY, EITHER FUNCTIONALLY, AESTHETICALLY OR EMOTIONALLY.” OUR PERSONAL SPACE CAN REFLECT WHAT WE FEEL ON THE INSIDE BUT ALSO WHO WE ARE AS PEOPLE. MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS TO CREATE AN AURA FROM WHICH NO INDIVIDUAL EVER WANTS TO ESCAPE. I WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS THROUGH SMART AND SIMPLE PLACEMENT OF SPACES, COLORS AND TEXTURES. I WANT EACH SPACE, HOME, AND OFFICE TO HAVE ITS OWN LIFE THAT EMBRACES THE HUMAN WHO OCCUPIES IT. MY DESIGNS WILL BE SIMPLE BUT SIGNIFICANT AND HARMONIZE THE MOOD WITH THE …

Eco-House: Creating A Space For Eco-Arts Education, Angela Waseskuk
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The beginnings of Eco-House were formed through conversations I had with undergraduate students enrolled in Elizabeth Sutton’s art history course “Art, Ecology, and Empire” in the fall of 2015. The discussions always began with great enthusiasm for the content, and then turned towards the depressing reality of what that content meant for the future of our planet. Significantly, the students also understood the surprising closeness of issues presented in class—extractavism, water quality and availability, animal exploitation, and Native American displacement and colonialism—on their own lives and the local ecology of the Cedar Valley. I heard passion, anger, and frustration in …

Strangers In A Strange Land: Spanish Chant Manuscript Leaves In The Permanent Collection Of The University Of Northern Iowa Gallery Of Art, Alison Altstatt
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
This essay introduces three large manuscript leaves held in the Permanent Art Collection of the University of Northern Iowa. These folio-sized leaves originated in large Spanish choir books (or cantorales) from the late sixteenth through the early eighteenth century that held the texts and music of Gregorian Chant used in the Roman Catholic liturgy. These leaves are ‘strangers’ in the sense that their origin is unknown, stripped as they are of their material context in the book and their historical context in the institutions and rituals for which they were made. They are in a ‘strange land’ in that …

I began to transition into the role of editor-in-chief of Utilitas in the spring of 2016 and fully assumed the position late in the summer. Since volume 29 will be the first for which I am entirely responsible, this seems like an appropriate juncture for me to say a few words about my plans for the journal.
