Conference Proceedings
Building on recently published research, an academic librarian and art professor facilitate the design and creation of visual and text pieces that illustrate information literacy terms’ meanings. This informational campaign uses data from a large-scale assessment of student comprehension of terms used in library instruction and syllabi. It offers an innovative way to teach students the language they need to be effective researchers, while detailing a library-art department collaboration that gives students a real-world learning experience.
Capturing Their Stories: Collecting Oral Histories From Users Of Segregated Libraries In The South (Presentation For The Southern History Of Education Society Annual Meeting, March 2017), Matthew R. Griffis
Publications and Other Resources
From the conference program: "This presentation reviews the progress of a federally-funded, 3-year historical study that explores how segregated Carnegie libraries were used as places of community-making, interaction, and learning for African Americans in the days of Jim Crow. Known then as “Carnegie colored libraries,” these public libraries opened in eight southern states between 1900 and 1925 and were an extension of the well-known library development program funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Some operated for as many as six decades until, by the 1970s, most had closed or were integrated into the library systems of their larger …

Millions of Filipino Catholics consider themselves as devotees of the Nazareno. It is a unique cultural facet of Filipino Catholicism being one of the deeply ingrained folk devotions in the country. It is, therefore, one of the most important loci for doing theology in the Filipino context being a concrete expression of the faith of many Filipino Catholics. This paper attempts to contribute one approach in strengthening the theological significance of the devotion to the Nazareno in order to see how the Gospel of Christ could further permeate the lives of the people. Here, the author contends that the devotion …

The Movement For Human Rights For Sexual And Gender Minorities In Nepal: The Beginning, 2001-2015, Roshan Mahato
Sustainability and Social Justice
Various social justice and political movements have assisted in expanding LGBTI rights around the world. Many international movements have influenced Nepali LGBTI people to start a movement in the country. In addition, political upheaval in Nepal that overthrew the monarchy and established a multi-party democratic republican system along with an inclusive new constitution helped the LGBTI movement in the country grow rapidly. Between 2001 to 2015, the LGBTI groups in Nepal have made history by achieving major milestones such as Supreme Court verdicts in their favor and a new constitution in 2015 that assures sexual and gender minorities of equal …

Students participating in sustained community service at an urban Catholic and Marianist university were volunteer informants in this qualitative exploration of the meaning they make of their service experiences. A PhD student research team (nine members) interviewed fourteen undergraduate students (eleven of whom were seniors). Findings were organized as themes constructed within three domains: background, experience, and meaning. Within “background,” students who had prior work in faith-based service before college deepened their meaning of service. Within “experience,” there were social and cultural dynamics of navigating on and off campus life, including the roles students played as well as the challenge …

Colb And Dorf On Abortion And Animal Rights, Mylan Engel Jr.
Colb And Dorf On Abortion And Animal Rights, Mylan Engel Jr.
Between the Species
In their recent book, Sherry Colb and Michael Dorf defend the following ethical theses: (1) sentience is sufficient for possessing the right not to be harmed and the right not to be killed; (2) killing sentient animals for food is almost always seriously wrong; (3) aborting pre-sentient fetuses raises no moral concerns at all; and (4) aborting sentient fetuses is wrong absent a reason weighty enough to justify killing the fetus. They also discuss strategies and tactics for activists: They oppose the use of graphic images by activists on tactical grounds, and they categorically oppose the use of violence by …
