Affective Terrains: Art, War, And National Belonging, Susan Cahill Mar 2017

Affective Terrains: Art, War, And National Belonging, Susan Cahill

Canadian Military History

This paper examines how cultural representations affirm national belonging within the context of Canada’s involvement in the War on Terror. To do this, it takes as its central case study an exhibition of official war art, 11 Artists for 11/11 (2012), which was mounted on public display in celebration of Remembrance Day. This paper approaches the exhibition and the works included in it by addressing their representative and non-representative (or affective) qualities, in order to think through the ways in which visual narratives of military history participate in shaping sentimental attachments to Canadian identity and being Canadian.

Fugitive Fragment, Diana Campuzano

CGU MFA Theses

My work explores the fugitive beauty around us and tries to capture and embody it. For my work IC5070 I began with an image of a nebula IC5070, I created a work that hung from the ceiling and was 27 feet square and hung down 8 feet to just above the viewers. I explore the micro and the macro worlds with many of my works crossing back and forth between

What Is Philosophy?, Howard S. Ruttenberg Mar 2017

What Is Philosophy?, Howard S. Ruttenberg

Publications and Research

The speaker relates philosophy to and distinguishes it from all the arts and sciences in terms of its breadth and depth. Philosophy thinks about things, and thoughts, and words and actions (“words and deeds”, in Cicero’s phrase). There are examples of philosophers who have reduced all three of them to one and of philosophers who have kept them distinct. There have been revolutions in philosophy, responsive to great changes in cultural life, in science and politics, and in reaction against established traditions within philosophy. In modern times, there has been a metaphysical revolution against the Aristotelian schoolmen, an epistemological revolution …

Review: Tolerance Among The Virtues, Bharat Ranganathan Mar 2017

Review: Tolerance Among The Virtues, Bharat Ranganathan

Religion Faculty Publications

In increasingly pluralistic liberal democracies, citizens are commanded to be tolerant toward one another. Likewise, intolerance among citizens is criticized. But what exactly is tolerance? Is tolerance a personal attitude toward others whose beliefs and practices we neither wholly accept nor wholly reject? If it is a personal attitude, what does tolerance require from us, epistemologically, morally, and politically, in our interactions with one another? Or given the diverse communities in which we find ourselves, is tolerance something imposed upon us, for example, through coercive policies enforced by our shared social and political institutions? If our shared social and political …

Application Of Inverse Problems In Imaging, Xiaoyue Luo Mar 2017

Application Of Inverse Problems In Imaging, Xiaoyue Luo

Post-Grant Reports

In this project, we studied how to enhance image quality by denoising and deblurring a given image mathematically. We compared some existing state-of-the-art methods for image denoising and deblurring. We implemented the algorithms numerically using Matlab.

We studied the possibility of combining statistical analysis with the traditional image restoration methods including using wavelets and framelets and we derived some encouraging preliminary results.

My research student Alleta Maier gave a sequence of talks on the project including the Pacific Northwest Mathematical Association of America conference at Oregon State University in April, 2016; Linfield College Taylor Series in March, 2016, and Linfield …

Abolitionists Day: Why Now?, Olivia Ortman Mar 2017

Abolitionists Day: Why Now?, Olivia Ortman

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

This past Saturday, I attended the very first Abolitionists Day here in Gettysburg. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at the Seminary Ridge Refectory, but the crowded room seemed like a promising sight to me. When the event started, I was greeted with the words of famous abolitionists—William Loyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Beecher Stowe—being spoken by reenactors in period garb. As I listened, I couldn’t help wondering why now? This was a question I heard echoed by many of the other event goers. Why hold the first Abolitionist Day on March 4, 2017?
