The Performativity Of Cultural Trauma And The Construction Of Trauma Discourse, Jianhui Wang
The Performativity Of Cultural Trauma And The Construction Of Trauma Discourse, Jianhui Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As literary theories, the trauma theory and the performativity theory are interrelated in that performativity is the process of trauma representation and trauma is the object of performativity. Trauma does not preexist, but becomes one. The performativity of cultural trauma is the means by which trauma discourse is constructed. Through an exploration of the performativity of cultural trauma and of the construction of trauma discourse, this article sorts out and examines the two literary theories in question and their critical paradigms.
The Quarrel Between Philosophy And Poetry In Agamben's Literary Horizon, Hongsheng Jiang
The Quarrel Between Philosophy And Poetry In Agamben's Literary Horizon, Hongsheng Jiang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The split between philosophy and poetry has long been accepted as natural in Western culture. Agamben maintains that this scission actually engendered serious problems. It is a manifestation of the schizophrenic character of Western culture: the subject cannot fully possess the object of knowledge and experience the wholeness of humanity, leading to alienation of the self and culture. In addressing the old enmity between philosophy and poetry, Agmaben proposes a kind of creative criticism, which joins together criticism and creation, to recover the unity of the fragmented word in Western culture. In Agamben's view, the development of an "interdisciplinary discipline" …
The Riddle Of Life And Death And Its Appearance On Vase Paintings: An Interpretation Of The Essential Theme Of The Pre-Socratic Cosmological Aesthetics, Shunning Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The essential theme of Pre-Socratic cosmological aesthetics is the riddle of life and death. It shows that from the very beginning Pre-Socratic thoughts were not about the exploration into nature, but about life and death. Such a concern was conceived in Proto-Geometric and Geometric decorated pottery in the Dark ages, rather than derived from the writings of Hesiod and Homer.
The Violent "Linguistic Utopia": The Issue Of Evil In Terry Eagleton's Theory, Jian Wang
The Violent "Linguistic Utopia": The Issue Of Evil In Terry Eagleton's Theory, Jian Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The issue of Evil which Terry Eagleton discusses is a hot topic that originated from the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, though many modern philosophers are puzzled about this unexplained violence which suddenly appeared in history. Eagleton turns his attention to the layer of Language, arguing that the transcendentality in Language contains both creativity and lethality. Eagleton's contemplations also include his reflections on Arnoldian elitist theories. He calls for a new ethical materialism which is related to the other and personal limitation and both the relation to the other and personal limitation are uncontrollable.

On Sport and Society
Now that the World Baseball Classic has ended and the United States has finally notched a WBC championship, it is time to reflect on the event. For me, it was a great success not because the U.S. won, although that was important, but rather for a number of other reasons.
Cultural Diversity In Student Ministry Leadership, Steven Zhou
Cultural Diversity In Student Ministry Leadership, Steven Zhou
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
In an attempt to contribute to how ministries and Christian academia is addressing issues of diversity, I am conducting a study to analyze correlations between ethnicity and styles/values of leadership. The goal is to uncover whether or not a particular ethnicity generally prefers one style of leadership over another. Past research on the subject has already seen that, in the business world, certain practices work better than others. For example, those from an Asian culture are more likely to prefer formality and authority as opposed to the collaborative and relationship-oriented style of leadership found in America. I will contribute to …
The Giving Trees: The (Un)Sustainability Of Palm Oil In Indonesia, Amber Rosche
The Giving Trees: The (Un)Sustainability Of Palm Oil In Indonesia, Amber Rosche
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Palm oil is the main source of cooking oil for much of Africa, Asia and Brazil. Due to the increasingly high demand for palm oil, countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia have cleared millions of acres of tropical rainforests to create space for oil palm plantations. This deforestation has led to extreme environmental and social concerns such as the burning of peatlands, the endangerment of a number of species, including the Sumatran Tiger, rhinos and orangutans, and the displacement of native populations. Indonesia is the world’s largest consumer and producer of palm oil, producing almost half of the world’s supply …

Simulations Of The Androgynous Society: Shattering Gender Stereotypes In George Eliot’S Silas Marner, Jessica L. Wall
Simulations Of The Androgynous Society: Shattering Gender Stereotypes In George Eliot’S Silas Marner, Jessica L. Wall
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
This paper examines George Eliot's novel Silas Marner and the compelling argument it asserts against Victorian gender stereotypes. Through the contradictory successes of characters that fail to conform to their expected niches, Eliot presents her revolutionary vision for an androgynous society. Most notably, Silas’s accidental motherhood redeems his purpose while saving Eppie's life, Priscilla's ability to protect the well-being of her family stems from her avoidance of a husband and assumption of a “masculine” managerial position, and Eppie’s idyllic life with Silas is preserved by her refusal to be treated as a possession by male authority figures. Through the experiences …
Hollywood, The Media, And The Alteration Of Image In The 1940s, Sean M. Conrad
Hollywood, The Media, And The Alteration Of Image In The 1940s, Sean M. Conrad
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
I am currently writing a feature-length screenplay entitled Klara based on true events and people surrounding the rise of Nazi Germany and the exile of Jewish-German intellectuals to America during 1933-1945. The narrative is grounded in the work of the European Film Fund (1938-1948), the Paul Kohner Talent Agency, and the various agents of propaganda at work both in Nazi Germany and America during this time period. Through my research I hope to explicate how Jewish-German exile in America influenced not only those exiled, but also the burgeoning American film industry and how the cross-cultural intersection of media propaganda, both …

The Dislocated Spectator's Relationship To Enchanted Objects In Early Film And Modernist Poetry, Rachel Christine Ekblad
The Dislocated Spectator's Relationship To Enchanted Objects In Early Film And Modernist Poetry, Rachel Christine Ekblad
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the early 1900s, industry and new technologies dislocated our sense of selfhood. Since the Industrial Revolution, the world had become increasingly crammed with material objects, leading up to when the invention of radio and the rise of electricity perpetuated and evidenced an interest in the immaterial. A similar fascination with magic as expressed in cultural forms such as the traveling show and the séance pointed to our new relationship to the object world: the self, dislocated from the body, could relocate in objects, forming a circuitous relationship akin to electricity. This phenomenon is encapsulated by the representation of enchanted …
Self-Representation Of Women In Eighteenth-Century Europe: Lady Anna Miller And The Grand Tour, Annie Kristina Polzella
Self-Representation Of Women In Eighteenth-Century Europe: Lady Anna Miller And The Grand Tour, Annie Kristina Polzella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Grand Tour is known to scholars as a significant period of travel in which members of English society could immerse themselves in the foreign, while also adhering to established social customs. Scholarship previously regarded the Grand Tour as an intellectual journey for aristocratic Englishmen; however, an incorporation of women into this narrative has introduced many new and important themes that merit further study. Women’s increasing participation in the Grand Tour, which gained in popularity in the eighteenth century, reveals many unique aspects of British society in the period. The integration of women into the Tour is also an indication …
