Camped with the 1st Wisconsin Infantry near Bowling Green, he refers to aspects of camp life including inspections, procuring honey from bees, and an African-American cook, John Brown, who speaks of his abolitionist namesake. The Legacy Of “Old Osawatomie”: John Brown In Art And Memory, Ryan Bilger Mar 2017

The Legacy Of “Old Osawatomie”: John Brown In Art And Memory, Ryan Bilger

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

This, of course, is no deity, but rather John Brown, a man who received many appellations both during and after his lifetime. Abolitionist. Murderer. Freedom fighter. Terrorist. And this picture is known as Tragic Prelude, painted by the American regionalist artist John Steuart Curry. A native of Kansas, Curry received a commission from Governor Walter Huxman in the late 1930s to paint a series of murals depicting the state’s history for the Kansas State Capitol Building. Other scenes in the mural cycle included depictions of the explorer Francisco Coronado and Padre Padilla, but the most recent scene, as well …

1650 - AméRique Septentrional

Pre-1824 Maps

This 1650 map of North America depicts the Great Lakes in a recognizable form naming both Lake Ontario and Lake Superior. The East Coast designation “N[ouvelle] Amsterdam is present day New York and “N[ovelle] Suede” is the Swedish colony, present day Delaware. The area delineated as “Mer Glaciale” refers to the Northwest Passage. The source for the Southwest area are the 1630 reports of Father Alonso Benavides on his travels in New Mexico with many Native tribes describe. The R. del Norte (Rio Grande) is shown mistakenly as flowing from an interior lake and emptying into the Mar Vermeio (Gulf …

The Nixon Administration And American Foreign Relations, Luke A. Nichter Mar 2017

The Nixon Administration And American Foreign Relations, Luke A. Nichter

Presidential Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Assessments of President Richard Nixon’s foreign policy continue to evolve as scholars tap new possibilities for research. Due to the long wait before national security records are declassified by the National Archives and made available to researchers and the public, only in recent decades has the excavation of the Nixon administration’s engagement with the world started to become well documented. As more records are released by the National Archives (including potentially 700 hours of Nixon’s secret White House tapes that remain closed), scholarly understanding of the Nixon presidency is likely to continue changing. Thus far, historians have pointed to four …

The Tyranny Of Authority: Eternal Damnation In The Fragments Of Clement Of Alexandria?, Daniel J. Crosby Mar 2017

The Tyranny Of Authority: Eternal Damnation In The Fragments Of Clement Of Alexandria?, Daniel J. Crosby

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

This short paper discusses a fragment that John Potter (1715) incorrectly assigned to a hypothetical work of Clement of Alexandria called "On the soul," and how his error came to be responsible for a sharp divide in scholarship with regard to Clement's beliefs about hell and punishment after death. I conclude by suggesting that this short case study also highlights the importance of maintaining an awareness of the ideas and decisions that underlie a critical edition of a text.

Sunday Dinner, George Dominic Barreca Mar 2017

Sunday Dinner, George Dominic Barreca

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Archeology often evaluates social class through the symbolism and refinement of ceramic pottery. Recording undecorated and decorated vessels placed within a spectrum, determines a social economy through the Ceramic Value Index. Austere, robust earthenware is usually considered peasantry or lower class whereas fine, opulent porcelain is categorized under the vessels of aristocracy or affluence. I am interested in utilizing this historical method to consider use, decoration, and value through the lens of the contemporary working class.

In my work, I employ simple molds and hand-building techniques to define a process that relates to the “economy of means” found within …

You Will Forget You Are Even Burning, Cheramie Johnson

"There's places around here," Rego's mother told him once, outside on their front porch over coffee and tea, "where demons walk."

"Demons, then?" He was always playful, he always catered to her.

"Devils," she whispered harshly, and her skinny fingers shivered against her cigarette. ~excerpt from short story

Strange New World, Marcus Bowlus

The trip between Egypt and Jerusalem had taken hours already, the environmental shielding on his sand skimmer shone a faint orange, the barren wastes flying by below were scattered with husks of tanks and bones, scorch marks still clinging to a battle field no one wanted to remember. ~excerpt from the short story

Transmission sounds like it’s got maybe a day left in it before I really got to take it in. Put it off long enough now; ain’t like I’ve had any spare cash to pay for it. So now the damn thing sounds like it’s had enough. Fucking lovely. Refrigerator blew out yesterday; dropped my last light bulb while trying to replace the one in the kitchen. ~excerpt from short story

Waiting, Alexis Brown Mar 2017

Waiting, Alexis Brown

The Tuxedo Archives

“Thinking about someone special?” a young woman with big round brown hazel eyes asked me as I sat waiting for my time to come. I didn’t really have anything else to think about while I sat on the old moldy looking chair inside the 36B Airport Terminal. All I could replay in my mind was the thought of my wife smiling at me when I finally got home. That is, if I ever got home. ~excerpt from short story

They were laughing at me, I knew it. I brushed the sweat off of my brow and looked forward at the tall looming steeple that had haunted my dreams for the better part of a year. I could see their false angelic faces staring back at me, mocking me, waiting to see if I would complete my mission. ~excerpt from short story

Aideen’s eyes glowed with envy as she watched her older sister Fia dance the Burning Dance in the center of the circle. Fia’s hair was a drifting mass of golden tendrils, and her thin, graceful limbs writhed in perfect unison with the movements of the flames. ~excerpt from short story

Behold the bloodless puppet rising
out a cheap quadrangular man-hole.
Fluorescent mandarin hair forming
a deceptive heart around alabaster skin,
framing his daisy petal eyes, his pink colossal nose,
and boomerang mouth.
