Upping The Anti: Tracing The Literary Antihero From Its Edifying Roots To Its Potent Threat Upon The Behavior Of American Youth, Sarah E. Dunlap Apr 2017

Upping The Anti: Tracing The Literary Antihero From Its Edifying Roots To Its Potent Threat Upon The Behavior Of American Youth, Sarah E. Dunlap

Selected Honors Theses

The literary antihero is continually increasing in potency, emerging today in its most morally egregious form; thus, while the chasm between the antiheroes’ edifying ethical roots and present state of criminal agency expands rapidly, the threat of the antiheroes’ morally ambiguous plots become mimetically transferential to contemporary American youth. This thesis explores the rise in potency in three literary periods. Outlining one foundational novel for each respective era, through Roland Barthes’ structuralism, reveals, on the one hand, the underlying cultural causalities of aberrant behavior and, on the other hand, each character’s unique mental conditions. In Model A, the tenets of …

Smartphone Usage And Religiosity In Lds Young Adults, Matthew R. Fereday Apr 2017

Smartphone Usage And Religiosity In Lds Young Adults, Matthew R. Fereday

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to identify any smartphone usage with significant positive or negative relationships with the religiosity of LDS young adults, with the hypothesis that smartphone usage would indeed have significant relationships with religiosity, both positively and negatively. Over 1,000 BYU students were surveyed for their usage of 36 popular and religious apps and of 33 different categories of content consumption, their content sharing, and compulsive use. That data was compared with their private religiosity (prayer, scripture study, and thinking seriously about religion) and religious experience (strength of beliefs, feeling the Spirit, finding strength through their faith, etc.) BYU students' …

Yamada Eimi And The Value Of Trash, Mariah Christina Hunt Apr 2017

Yamada Eimi And The Value Of Trash, Mariah Christina Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

This paper addresses the collusion with and contradiction to patriarchal power structures of race and femininity in Yamada Eimi's Bedtime Eyes and Trash. In moments of Bedtime Eyes, particularly the final novella "Jesse," and Trash, Yamada contradicts her irresponsible portrayals of Japanese female and black male identity often found in her fiction. This paper will discuss ideological shifts in Yamada's narratives through a textual analysis of Bedtime Eyes and Trash, arguing that through changes in narrative that affect character development, "Jesse" and Trash begin to deconstruct some of the detrimental power structures that shape much Yamada's …

"How In This Cruel Age I Celebrated Freedom": Aesopian Subversion In Nikolai Ulyanov's Painting For The 1937 Pushkin Centenary, Annilyn Marie Spjut Apr 2017

"How In This Cruel Age I Celebrated Freedom": Aesopian Subversion In Nikolai Ulyanov's Painting For The 1937 Pushkin Centenary, Annilyn Marie Spjut

Theses and Dissertations

Painted in 1937 as part of the centenary celebration of the death of Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Ulyanov's A. S. Pushkin and his Wife, N. N. Pushkina at the Imperial Ball has been lauded as the quintessential example of Soviet history painting. Modern scholars have followed the lead of Soviet critics, who praised the painting for its insight into the psychology of the brilliant poet repressed by the tyrannical tsarist regime. According to this interpretation, Soviet viewers in the 1930s were to ponder on the tragedy of Pushkin's demise and rejoice that the victory of Socialism had freed them from such …

Unless Someone Like You Cares A Whole Awful Lot: Apocalypse As Children’S Entertainment, Gerry Canavan Apr 2017

Unless Someone Like You Cares A Whole Awful Lot: Apocalypse As Children’S Entertainment, Gerry Canavan

English Faculty Research and Publications

This article explores an unusual subset of children’s narrative, the apocalyptic environmentalist text, and argues that such texts perform the perverse ideological work of shifting blame for ecological crisis from its perpetrators (the parents’ generation) to its victims (the child who is now called upon to act). These texts transform the drama of innocence and experience that is paradigmatic of children’s narrative by destroying the child’s innocence through their very transmission, by informing them of a dire crisis they then become obliged to repair. The article’s primary examples are Captain Planet, The Lorax, WALL-E and The Butter Battle …

Name It And Claim It: Cross-Campus Collaborations For Community-Based Learning, Beth Godbee, Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes Apr 2017

Name It And Claim It: Cross-Campus Collaborations For Community-Based Learning, Beth Godbee, Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes

English Faculty Research and Publications

This article describes the value of cross-campus collaborations for community-based learning. We argue that community-based learning both provides unique opportunities for breaking academic silos and invites campus partnerships to make ambitious projects possible. To illustrate, we describe a course "Writing for Social Justice" that involved created videos for our local YWCA's Racial Justice Program. We begin by discussing the shared value of collaboration across writing studies and librarianship (our disciplinary orientations). We identify four forms of cross-campus collaboration, which engaged us in working with each other, with our community partner, and with other partners across campus. From there, we visualize …

Transmitting Revolution: Radio, Rumor, And The 1953 East German Uprising, Michael Palmer Pulido Apr 2017

Transmitting Revolution: Radio, Rumor, And The 1953 East German Uprising, Michael Palmer Pulido

Dissertations (1934 -)

This project examines public opinion in the Dresden Region of the German Democratic Republic from the end of World War II through the summer of 1953. I argue that the Socialist Unity Party (SED) projected its legitimacy through an official public sphere by representing publicness to its citizenry. Through banners, the press, and choreographed public demonstrations, it aimed to create the appearance of popular support. Even more significantly, the SED used radio to ground its legitimacy in a burgeoning post-war internationalism that bound residents of the GDR in an imagined community of socialist nations under Stalin’s leadership. At the same …

Conflicts Based On Race/Ethnicity Among Latina/O Students In Schools, Michael James Martinez Apr 2017

Conflicts Based On Race/Ethnicity Among Latina/O Students In Schools, Michael James Martinez

Dissertations (1934 -)

Conflicts based on race/ethnicity continue to occur today in a wide range of settings. Of particular interest are racial/ethnic conflicts that occur in schools due to the impact they can have on students’ emotional well-being, academic achievement and the overall and racial school climate. Evidence exists that indicates the occurrence of racial/ethnic conflicts in schools but little attention has been specifically given to within-group or intra-racial/ethnic conflicts. Latina/o students are particularly fitting for such an examination given the clear within group diversity that exists within the population. This study sought to gain a better understanding of conflicts based on race/ethnicity …

Work-Family Balance: A Narrative Analysis Of The Personal And Professional Histories Of Female Superintendents, Nicole White Apr 2017

Work-Family Balance: A Narrative Analysis Of The Personal And Professional Histories Of Female Superintendents, Nicole White

Dissertations (1934 -)

According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (2014), 74 percent of Wisconsin’s teachers are women, while only 26 percent of Wisconsin’s superintendents are women indicating a significant disparity among the educational ranks. Studies have claimed that women are obtaining their superintendent credentials at the same rate as men, yet in the state of Wisconsin, women account for a mere 22 percent of licensed candidates. Much of the previous literature identifies this problem and rationalizes it with the gender biases that have plagued women for centuries. This study went beyond that and focused on women in the 26 percent who …

The First Thing Andrew Did' [John 1:41]: Readers As Witnesses In The Fourth Gospel, Mark L. Trump Apr 2017

The First Thing Andrew Did' [John 1:41]: Readers As Witnesses In The Fourth Gospel, Mark L. Trump

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 1996, Robert F. Kysar identified one of the leading issues that would form scholarly debate regarding the Fourth Gospel for decades to come: whether the Fourth Gospel is designed to strengthen and affirm the faith of those inside a Johannine community (a sectarian document/community) or to bring to faith those who were not yet part of that community (an evangelistic tract/missionary community). The sectarian position, often connected to the work of J. Louis Martyn, Raymond E. Brown, and Wayne A. Meeks, has become the received tradition in Johannine studies. Increasingly, others have called into question not only the results …

The Cry Of The Poor: Anthropology Of Suffering And Justice In Health Care From A Latin American Liberation Approach, Alexandre Andrade Martins Apr 2017

The Cry Of The Poor: Anthropology Of Suffering And Justice In Health Care From A Latin American Liberation Approach, Alexandre Andrade Martins

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation examines the connection between poverty and health inequalities from a liberation theological ethics perspective. It uses Simone Weil’s and Latin American liberation theology’s approaches to suffering and social justice as theoretical sources to address health inequalities and the suffering of the poor because of social injustice, vulnerability to diseases, and lack of healthcare assistance. First of all, these approaches are examined from how they shape an anthropology of suffering that enable us to understand the suffering of the poor and, at the same time, to recognize them as agents of their own liberation and struggle for justice in …

The Two Goats: A Christian Yom Kippur Soteriology, Richard Barry Apr 2017

The Two Goats: A Christian Yom Kippur Soteriology, Richard Barry

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation draws on recent historical-critical research into ancient Jewish temple theology, the priestly book of Leviticus, and especially the Yom Kippur liturgy of Leviticus 16, to develop a more paradoxical interpretation of Christ’s saving work for modern Christian systematic theology. Prompted by the pioneering research of Jacob Milgrom, there has been a surge in sympathetic interpretations of the priestly theological tradition, which has inspired fresh interpretations of the Levitical Day of Atonement. I argue that an adequate Christian theory of atonement must be attentive to both the overall “landscape” of Jewish biblical thought, and to the specific rhythm of …

Hương Ngô: To Name It Is To See It, Faye Gleisser, Julie Rodrigues Widholm Apr 2017

Hương Ngô: To Name It Is To See It, Faye Gleisser, Julie Rodrigues Widholm

DePaul Art Museum Publications

This publication accompanies the exhibition Hương Ngô: To Name It is to See It, on view April 27- August 6, 2017 at DePaul Art Museum. In a new body of work that includes photographs, textiles, prints, neon, video, sound, and objects, Hương Ngô engages with the French government’s surveillance archives of Vietnamese anticolonial organizer Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai (1910-1941). The role of performance in the construction of identity is at the forefront of Ngô’s investigation of this historical figure. Minh Khai’s constant crossing of borders – those of nation-states, ethnicities, languages, genders, and classes – via her numerous pseudonyms and …

Slavery And Justice In The Free North: New York's Black Activists, 1831-1841, James Wallace-Lee , '17 Apr 2017

Slavery And Justice In The Free North: New York's Black Activists, 1831-1841, James Wallace-Lee , '17

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Black activism in 1830s New York was centered around antislavery and abolitionism, and as such was deeply connected to white reform of all forms. Though this connection provided an economic base for black organization, it also fueled racist sentiment among white workers who were increasingly exploited by the transition to wage labor. Though some recent historians and some white reformers in the era embraced a liberal notion of freedom that denied the continued harm of slavery, black reformers understood slavery and capitalism to be intimately connected, and articulated a politics that saw racial and economic exploitation as part of the …
