Peace Museums On The Land Of Victims And The Land Of Perpetrators: Analyses Of Curation And Design Of The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum And The Information Center Under The Field Of Stelae In Berlin, Yuka Kitajima 17

Honor Scholar Theses

This paper examines if, how and to which degree, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Nakajima District of Hiroshima, Japan and the Information Center under the Field of Stelae in Berlin, Germany, transform a Culture of Violence and a Culture of Neutrality into a Culture of Peace. I analyzed sponsors, mission statements, exhibits, topographical and architectural designs, and geographical factors as a reflection of the degree of these selected museums’ contribution to the cultural transformation. The two selected museums stand on the soils with a complex history involving mass tragedies. Hiroshima became the first-ever victim to the atomic bombing which …

Ambiguous Pleasure(Ers): Negotiating The Bodies Of Falstaff And Moll, Lauren Van Atta Apr 2017

Ambiguous Pleasure(Ers): Negotiating The Bodies Of Falstaff And Moll, Lauren Van Atta

Honors Theses

The British Early Modern Period was a time of shifting social ideologies where class as well as gender were mapped onto bodies and embedded in the very material conditions of life. But class and gender were not discreet categories with dichotomous definitions like ‘male’ and ‘female’, or ‘nobility’ and ‘peasant’. They had many inbetweens, and the theater was perhaps the most glaring inbetween of all. The theater necessarily complicates definitions and ways of viewing bodies as no body is what they seem. And at the heart of these ambiguous identities lay the fat body. It is consumptive, it is transgressive, …

The Communal Dimensions Of Birthing Imagery In Paul's Epistles, Mary K. Schmitt Apr 2017

The Communal Dimensions Of Birthing Imagery In Paul's Epistles, Mary K. Schmitt

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

"Paul's birthing imagery operates metaphorically in ways that correspond to John Wesley's phrase "new birth;' and careful examination of Paul's metaphors indicates important avenues for reframing some of the conversation around new birth in the Wesleyan tradition."

Utopia And The Favelas Of Rio De Janeiro, Curtis L. Carter Apr 2017

Utopia And The Favelas Of Rio De Janeiro, Curtis L. Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Utopias from ancient times to the present have come and gone. They remain as a part of literary, philosophical and historical texts and communal practices. Yet this subject has never ceased to inspire contemporary minds as well. My aim in this paper is to consider the communities known as favelas that have formed on the edges of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro as a contemporary form of utopian community. The paper begins with a brief analysis of the concept of utopia. Then follows a discussion of the Favela as an urban utopia as seen from the perspective of …

The Myth Of Strategic And Tactical Airlift, Jacob D. Maywald, Adam D. Reiman, Alan A. Johnson, Robert E. Overstreet

Faculty Publications

In the 21st century, our ability to quickly and decisively deliver combat forces and equipment is of the utmost importance in achieving our national security objectives. The swiftness and flexibility of the US Air Force’s mobility airlift fleet is the key to executing a rapid global mobility strategy. The operational effectiveness and efficiency of military air transportation relies on the expertise and intuition of Air Mobility Command’s (AMC) mobility planners. Working in coordination with the United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) and geographic combatant commands (GCC), AMC is responsible for the tasking and tracking of almost 900 daily mobility sorties worldwide. …

Ni Rara, Ni Extraordinaria: Política Y Corporalidad En Eva Perón, Karina Elizabeth Vázquez Apr 2017

Ni Rara, Ni Extraordinaria: Política Y Corporalidad En Eva Perón, Karina Elizabeth Vázquez

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Original Clarinet Quartet Works Of Mike Curtis And Josh Spaulding: An Analysis And Performance Guide, Jennifer Reeves Apr 2017

Original Clarinet Quartet Works Of Mike Curtis And Josh Spaulding: An Analysis And Performance Guide, Jennifer Reeves

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

The clarinet quartet genre is a popular chamber ensemble for the instrument and is one that has little to no history available discussing its origins and development. Following a brief theoretical history of the clarinet quartet genre, the works of two 21st century composers are explored throughout the remainder of the document. Mike Curtis and Josh Spaulding’s compositions for clarinet quartet are extraordinary examples of the works that exist for this chamber ensemble.

A biography and compositional background is supplied for each composer, followed by individual chapters discussing the composers’ original works for clarinet quartet that utilize the instrumentation of …

Review Of The Apache Wars: The Hunt For Geronimo, The Apache Kid, And The Captive Boy Who Started The Longest War In American History, By Paul Andrew Hutton, Thomas A. Britten

History Faculty Publications

The Apache Wars (1861–86) have been a popular topic in American history for some time, and scholars have churned out a broad body of scholarship predominantly focusing on the roles of specific tribes and bands or biographies of participants, both Apache and U.S. Army. In The Apache Wars, Paul Andrew Hutton provides a comprehensive treatment of “the longest war in American history” with a special focus on Geronimo and the exploits of two less well known but no less important participants: the Apache Kid and Mickey Free. Intended for a broad audience, the book provides a thorough, balanced, and …
